I STAND HERE IRONING, by Tillie Olsen
Published in the 1961 collection Tell Me a Riddle, Olsen's story relates the heart-wrenching tale of a mother who is contaced by an unnamed you -- a guidance counselor at her daughter's school -- informing her that her daughter is in trouble.  While she irons, the mother works through her response to the summons and has flashbacks to her daughter's childhood.  Often cited as one of the best American short stories of the 20th century, I Stand Here Ironing explores the roots of a parent's guilt with unerring understanding and compassion, while never aiming for easy, pat answers.

2:00 PM ART LECTURE: FEMME FATALE with Ines Powell
The phrase femme fatale literally translated from French, means deadly woman. A femme fatale is often portrayed as a seductive woman who uses her charms to entice men into dangerous and sometimes-deadly situations. Femme fatale types have existed in almost every culture in the world, from ancient times to modernity. The sphinx, sirens, Aphrodite and Medea are a few among the many femmes fatales in ancient mythological tales. The Bible also includes several accounts of manipulative, temptresses that can be considered femmes fatales. Eve is the first of the many femmes fatales in the Bible, while Delilah, Salome and Jezebel also belong to the same archetype. Some biblical stories, like that of Judith and Holofernes, narrate the adventures of respectable and heroic femmes fatales who used their charms and abilities to destroy evil men for the greater good. In history, Cleopatra is usually awarded the title of the ultimate femme fatale.

2:00 PM Musical Greats: HAROLD ROME with Dr. Kolb

Composer and lyricist, Harold Rome created one of the off-Broadway gems of the 1930s: his ILGWU musical Revue, Pins and Needles. With a run of over 1,100 performances the musical not only charmed its audiences but also presented provocative and funny scenes about unions and world politics. Its songs included “Sing Me a Song with Social Significance, “It’s Better with a Union Man,” “Sunday in the Park,” “Four Little Angels of Peace,” and “Nobody Makes a Pass At Me.” Rome followed this success with Sing Out the News, Let Freedom Ring, and Call Me Mister. His book musicals included Wish You Were Here, Fanny, Destry Rides Again, I Can Get It for You Wholesale, and a major failure in Gone With the Wind.  Dr. James Kolb is Professor of Drama & Dance at Hofstra University.

The chorus plays a key role in many key scenes in operas, and in many operas the Chorus Director is given a curtain call in which to take a bow and salute the work his or her chorus has done.    7:30 PM Book Talk for Night Owls: 11.22.63, by Stephen King
The title is taken from the date on which John F. Kennedy was killed. It is a work of historical fiction based on real life and people in the 1950's and 1960's with lots of nostalgic references.  Time travel allows an alternate version of events and speculation about the effects of altering history. This Book Talk is presented by the Friends of the Library.  Book selections are available one month in advance of the talk at the Circulation Desk on the first floor.
