"In a heartbreakingly honest meditation on memory, identity, and aging, an elderly woman descending into dementia embarks on a desperate quest to find the best friend she believes has disappeared. Convinced Elizabeth is missing and in terrible danger, Maud's search for the truth will go back decades and have shattering consequences. As this singular obsession forms a cornerstone of Maud's rapidly dissolving present, the clues she discovers seem to lead to another unsolved disappearance: her sister, Sukey, who vanished shortly after World War II."

Join our new graphic novel book club!. We'll chat about this month's book and enjoy a snack break! This month we're reading Baba Yaga's Assistant by Marika McCoola and illustrated by Emily Carroll. (For Grades 4+. Registration is appreciated.)

Most children think twice before braving a haunted wood filled with terrifying beasties to match wits with a witch, but not Masha. Her beloved grandma taught her many things: that stories are useful, that magic is fickle, that nothing is too difficult or too dirty to clean. The fearsome witch of folklore needs an assistant, and Masha needs an adventure. She may be clever enough to enter Baba Yaga's house-on-chicken-legs, but within its walls, deceit is the rule. To earn her place, Masha must pass a series of tests, outfox a territorial bear, and make dinner for her host. No easy task, with children on the menu!

Author Talk with Joe Bebo to discuss his work "In The Back Of The Van: The Story of One Unforgettable Summer".

From the band’s first job on the Cape where they almost got arrested, to the famed Boston Tea Party gig, this book puts you on stage with the author as he plays drums behind Van Morrison. Witness Van’s blowup at the Psychedelic Supermarket, experience the magical night at the Rocky Point Amusement Park. This story chronicles the events of that memorable summer, and gives an intimate look at the famed songwriter and performer at a critical juncture in his life. Spanning the summer between Brown Eyed Girl and Astral Weeks, the author gives us a glimpse of Boston in the year 1968, and some insight into the factors that were to influence one of the most productive musical outputs of our time. This is the story of that unforgettable summer.

This month the Adult Book Club is reading Neverhome by Hunt Laird

"She calls herself Ash, but that's not her real name. She is a farmer's faithful wife, but she has left her husband to don the uniform of a Union soldier in the Civil War. Neverhome tells the harrowing story of Ash Thompson during the battle for the South. Through bloodshed and hysteria and heartbreak, she becomes a hero, a folk legend, a madwoman and a traitor to the American cause. Laird Hunt's dazzling new novel throws a light on the adventurous women who chose to fight instead of stay behind. It is also a mystery story: why did Ash leave and her husband stay? Why can she not return? What will she have to go through to make it back home? In gorgeous prose, Hunt's rebellious young heroine fights her way through history, and back home to her husband, and finally into our hearts."

To check availability or place a hold, please see the catalog.  Copies of the book in various formats can also be picked up anytime at the circulation desk prior to the meeting.

We will gallop on horses to our castles, sing joyfully as we skip off to grandmother’s house, and of course, we will huff and puff as we blow the houses down! Dance Me A Story is a six-week program with each session developed around stories such as Jack and the Beanstalk, Hansel and Gretel, and the Three Little Pigs.

This month the Adult Book Club is reading I Liked My Life by Abby Fabiaschi.

"Maddy was a loving, devoted stay-at-home mother . . . until she committed suicide, which left her husband Brady and her teenage daughter Eve heartbroken and reeling, wondering how they can possibly continue without her. Maddy, however, isn't quite done with them. In an attempt to fulfill her family's needs, Maddy watches and meddles from beyond the grave, determined to find the perfect wife and mother to replace herself and heal her family. That's when she finds Rory: a free-spirited schoolteacher, who Maddy maneuvers into Eve's confidences, but who turns out to be harboring a tragedy of her own.."
