Critics Choice Cinema: Lucky
| |
(Zulu, Hindi, and English, 2011, NR, 1 hr 40 min.)
How could a recently orphaned, 10-year old homeless South African boy ever be called lucky? Over the grave of his dead mother, Lucky makes a promise to make something of himself. leaving the security of his remote Zulu village for the big city with the hope of going to school, he arrives on the doorstep of an uncle who has no use for him. lucky then falls in with Padme, an elderly Indian woman with an inherent fear of Africans, who takes him in as she would a stray dog. Together, unable to speak each other’s language, they develop an unlikely bond. Through an odyssey marked by greed, violence, and, ultimately, belonging, Lucky shows how a child’s spirit can bring out decency, humility and even love in adults struggling to survive in the new South Africa.
Critics Choice Cinema features films that have won awards at film festivals around the world.

Movie Matters: Escape Fire
| |
(2012, PG-13, 1 hr 35 min)
Escape Fire tackles one of the most pressing issues of our time: what can be done to save our broken medical system? Award-winning filmmakers Matthew Heineman and Susan Froemke follow dramatic human stories as well as leaders fighting to transform healthcare at the highest levels of medicine, industry, government, and even the US military. The film examines the powerful forces trying to maintain the status quo in an industry designed for quick fixes rather than prevention, for profit-driven care rather than patient-driven care. After decades of resistance, a movement to bring innovative high-touch, low-cost methods of prevention and healing into our high-tech, costly system is finally gaining ground.

Meeting ten years ago at the Old Town School of Folk Music, this band has been performing at various Chicago-area clubs and restaurants, several libraries, schools, private parties and numerous farmers' markets. They were part of the pre-game entertainment for the Chicago Bulls home opener at the United Center last November. Their music ranges from Irish and Appalachian fiddle tunes through traditional folk songs to much more modern fare. Their instuments consist of fiddles, mandolin, banjos, guitars, flutes and pipes as well as bass guitar. Members of the group won the Midwest Fiddle Contest last summer. Join us for a rollicking good time!
