Dr. Sandy Murray presents Part II of "You Have Your DNA Matches - Now What?"  Utilizing DNA test results in our genealogy research is incredibly rewarding but initially can be very confusing. It requires good data organization along with record keeping for both the results and your contacts but it is well worth it. We will cover the basic biology and terminology used in analyzing the four types of DNA (Y-DNA, mtDNA, autosomal DNA and X DNA), compare the three major DNA-testing companies with respect to advantages, disadvantages and prices, and discuss “ethnicity/admixture” results that the companies advertise. We will compare match lists and the analytical tools available at each company (or not). We will then introduce working with chromosome browsers and matrix tools and how to transfer results to the free site, GEDmatch, so that results from different companies can be compared.  Sponsored by the Friends of Memorial Hall Library

The Keys to Focus, Organization, and Performance from Preschool through College
Presented by Adam J. Cox, Ph.D.

The education of youth must transcend traditional notions of intelligence. Harnessing the power of executive functions is the best way to active a person’s full capability, as it pertains to both academic and social development. Building executive functions is part of a child-centered approach to education, emphasizing the benefits of dynamic brain development and the power of learned behavior. Many have said that it is the single most important concept in child development today – the fulcrum on which success tilts.

This presentation will address the eight pillars of executive function (Initiation, Attention, Flexibility, Working Memory, Organization, Planning, Self-monitoring, Emotional Control), as described in Dr. Cox's book, No Mind Left Behind. Cox will discuss in detail how to help youth navigate important developmental hurdles, both academic and social, that are caused by aspects of executive dysfunction.

Dr. Cox will describe the elements of an ecology of attention – and how schools and families can integrate these elements into a positive, effective approach to coaching young learners.

Cox's ideas have been incorporated by families and schools worldwide. No Mind Left Behind is translated into multiple languages, and was the first trade book on executive functions published in North America. His practical advice emphasizes immediate, measurable steps for improving academic achievement. Each of his pillars of executive function is amply illustrated with “real life” examples, and many academic coaching strategies. Please do not miss this unique opportunity to learn how to build the capability of the important young people in your life.

This month's Night Readers selection will be Pax by Sara Pennypacker.  "Pax was only a kit when his family was killed, and “his boy” Peter rescued him from abandonment and certain death. Now the war front approaches, and when Peter’s father enlists, Peter has to move in with his grandpa. Far worse than being forced to leave home is the fact that Pax can’t go. Peter listens to his stern father—as he usually does—and throws Pax’s favorite toy soldier into the woods. When the fox runs to retrieve it, Peter and his dad get back in the car and leave him there—alone. But before Peter makes it through even one night under his grandfather’s roof, regret and duty spur him to action; he packs for a trek to get his best friend back and sneaks into the night."

Ted Reinstein returns to MHL to discuss his new book, Wicked Pissed: New England's Most Famous Feuds. New England is as dotted with colorful and fascinating feuds as it is with low stone walls and big, red barns. And many of them go back just as far! For instance, did you know that the Breeds and the Bunkers are still fighting over a hill? Or that the revolution is still being fought—by Lexington and Concord?! From the colonial era, through early aviation (CT claims the Wright Bros. are wrong), to Red Sox-Yankees and present-day food fights, Ted Reinstein tells us who’s really “Wicked Pissed” in New England, and why. Copies of the book will be available for sale.

Topics of mental health, addiction, family dynamics in times of crisis and post crisis, healing at home, developing coping skills and healthy activities will be discussed. Guest speakers will be invited to talk about hoarding, major mental illness, substance abuse and addiction, the use of Narcan, accessing services, and the availability of services throughout the state.

In addition, creating small circle conversations to discuss and try activities that focus on movement and mindfulness will allow families to try new things and walk a path that is in support of coping with difficult moments.

Are you “stuck” in your Irish research? Can’t find where in Ireland your ancestor is from? Do you have a place name in Ireland but can’t find them in Irish records? We’ll discuss some of the common pitfalls and problems in Irish research and look at strategies and resources to help you begin to chip away at your brick wall.

Judy Lucey is an Archivist at the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Judy joined the staff of NEHGS in 2003 and has been researching her own Irish ancestry for nearly twenty years. She has researched in many of Ireland's major repositories and has been past consultant on the NEHGS Dublin and Belfast research tours.  She worked on the recently published Genealogist’s Handbook for Irish Research with her NEHGS colleague, Marie Daly. In her spare time she continues to try and find her elusive Lucey ancestors in County Cork, Ireland.

Ellen Alden was sifting through her attic and discovered a leather box filled with Civil War era letters from her great, great grandfather. These letters written to his wife and children from the lines of the Virginia battlefields, tell the story of an Irish immigrant farmer forced to seek a better life in America. Similar to the challanges that immigrants still face today, this story speaks of the sacrifices families make to improve their lives. Ellen will discuss her new novel, Yours Faithfully, Florence Burke: An Irish Immigrant Story, which is based on the letters she found in her attic. Visit www.ellenalden.com. Copies of her book will be available.

Ellen B. Alden is a graduate of St. Michael's College. She has degrees from Pepperdine University and studied at Merrimack College. She resides in Andover with her husband, three children and two dogs.

    Contact: Reference   978-623-8401, x31   rdesk@mhl.org

The New England String Quartet will present a collection of classical and popular selections, including all-time favorite music pieces, with a pre-concert history lovers talk. The concert will also feature selections from their recording, Family Album, and works by contemporary composers.

Established in Boston in 2007, the New England String Quartet is dedicated to expanding the contemporary chamber music tradition through performances, recordings, educational activities and community outreach projects. The ensemble seeks to develop collaborations with contemporary composers, soloists and other ensembles. Members of the quartet conduct extensive research on chamber music pedagogy, performance, and compositional styles. The quartet established a public access television program Intermezzo, featuring chamber music performances, interviews with artists and composers, and educational presentations. The show is intended to cultivate a new generation of chamber musicians who are well-informed about both contemporary and classical music traditions.

The goal of Educational Circles is to bring the community together to talk about the difficult questions surrounding the stigma of mental health and addiction.
