With the Olympic Season upon us, it's a great time to review the Olympics of 1936, and explore how Hitler used those games as a public relations attempt to spread  propaganda and hide the truth about his Third Reich. Local historian Don Robb will explore:

  • Why Germany was ripe for Hitler to take power in the 1930s;
  • How his Nazi Party grew from an insignificant gang of malcontents into the most powerful political party in Germany;
  • What the Nazi regime meant to the German people;
  • How Hitler planned to use the Berlin Olympics to demonstrate the superiority of Germany and the German race;
  • How some Hungarian Jews, an African-American, and some rowers from the  University of Washington tarnished the image of Hitler and his theory of Aryan superiority.

Author Kristen Harnisch will discuss her newest book, The California Wife, the sequel to The Vintner's Daughter. Both a sequel and a stand-alone, it begins in the same scene in which her first novel ended. Harnisch takes readers back to 1897, when Sara Thibault has returned to France following the devastating end to her relationship with Philippe Lemieux, the vintner with whom she fell in love in California.Reunited and soon to be wed, Sara and Philippe struggle to manage two vineyards, his much-esteemed Eagle’s Run in Napa Valley and her humble family vineyard, St. Martin, in the Loire Valley. Philippe, used to making his own decisions, doesn’t always include Sara, and she, fully aware of her talents as a vintner, challenges his omissions head-on at home and in the streets with other Suffragettes. Troubles abound: the specter of Prohibition threatens their livelihood as do rival vintners, and ghosts from Philippe’s past might unravel the family he has just begun to build. As tensions mount, Sara welcomes the proximity of her dear friend Marie, a midwife who is the first woman selected to study surgery at Cooper Medical College in San Francisco. From managing a new marriage to managing new businesses, from the Paris World’s Fair in 1900 to a small vineyard in France, from the rough streets of San Francisco to its newest college, Sara and her family charge into the 20th century—and readers will readily follow, rooting for them through every page. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Kristen Harnisch drew upon her extensive research and her experiences living in San Francisco and visiting the Loire Valley and Paris to create the stories for her novels. Ms. Harnisch has a degree in economics from Villanova University and currently resides in Connecticut with her husband and three children.

   7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM What On (In) Earth is Green Burial?
    Contact: Reference   978-623-8401, x31   rdesk@mhl.org

Join other adults for an overview presentation on 'green' burials - co-hosted by Candace Currie, Director - Green Burial Council and Mount Auburn Cemetery, and Ruth Faas, owner -  Mourning Dove Studio of Arlington, MA, and Andover resident, Richard Davis. From the Civil War through today, American funeral practices have evolved into a highly formalized, cost intensive, and environmentally challenging industry. Green burials can provide a meaningful, economical, and aesthetic means for honoring the dead and providing  families and friends with a new (yet traditional) framework for funeral customs and practices. Please attend if you are interested in learning about this low impact, environmentally friendly, and very much legal means of caring for the deceased.

Ruth Faas has over fifteen years of professional and personal experience in the field of death and dying. As an occupational therapist, she worked with patients in rehab hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and nursing homes, serving as department head in four of them. Ruth worked at a federally funded research and training center for four years, and co-authored publications based on her academic research. She received an honorary appointment as a faculty member at Tufts Medical School. While doing graduate work in sociology at Boston College, she was a teaching assistant for a Death and Dying class. She has given presentations on occupational therapy and sociological issues at both the state and national levels. She founded a volunteer-run program for elder refugees in Thailand in 1990. Ruth's many years of clinical, theoretical and personal experience grappling with issues of death and dying all inform her current work with clients of Mourning Dove Studio.  She is committed to helping people cope with the emotional, practical, and financial challenges that can arise, and to helping people find their own ways to honor this important time.

Candace Currie is the director of planning and sustainability at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge and Watertown, MA.  She began her cemetery experience as a volunteer in the horticulture department mapping some of the 5000+ trees throughout the 175 acres. Today, she locates new graves within the historic core of Mount Auburn to be sold for natural burials and promotes the vision of one of Mount Auburn’s founders, Dr. Jacob Bigelow, who wrote in 1831: “The elements which have once moved and circulated in living frames do not become extinct nor useless after death: they offer themselves as the materials from which other living frames are to be constructed.”  In addition to her work with Mount Auburn, Candace volunteers with Green Burial Massachusetts.  She holds LEED Green Associate credential and a Master of Arts in Landscape Design from the Conway School of Landscape Design of western Massachusetts.

This month's Night Readers selection will be The Boys in the Boat : the true story of an American team's epic journey to win gold at the 1936 Olympics by Daniel James Brown.  "Out of the depths of the Great Depression comes the astonishing tale of nine working-class boys from the American West who at the 1936 Olympics showed the world what true grit really meant. With rowers who were the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew was never expected to defeat the elite East Coast teams, yet they did, going on to shock the world by challenging the German boat rowing for Adolf Hitler.   At the center of the tale is Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, whose personal quest captures the spirit of his generation—the generation that would prove in the coming years that the Nazis could not prevail over American determination and optimism."

Writing to Heal: using blog, personal essay and memoir to make peace with the past

Have you ever wondered if you should write a memoir about your life? Or considered sharing some of your personal thoughts online through a blog or a personal reflection essay? Are you not sure where to start - or even if these would be good outlets for you? Are you concerned about how writing about your personal story will affect your friends and family? Do you find that writing about the past stirs up intense feelings, but you still want to write? How do you balance delving into the past with living well in the present? What audience do you want to reach, and how would you reach them?

In this four-part workshop for the non-professional writer, we will work together to discern how you can use your writing in a more targeted and effective way to achieve your goals. In order to do that, you will spend some time discerning what those goals are and how writing can help you reach them. We'll discuss various methods of publishing and how they accomplish your particular goals. You will receive a long list of resources on writing, creativity, healing, self-care, and publishing. You will leave the class with greater clarity about what you want to write, how (or if) you want to publish, your goals for your writing, and a plan to produce the writing you long to create.

Note: By registering you are signing up for all 4 sessions. If you choose not to continue, please let straina@mhl.org know.

Dr. Sandy Murray presents, "You Have Your DNA Matches - Now What?"  Utilizing DNA test results in our genealogy research is incredibly rewarding but initially can be very confusing. It requires good data organization along with record keeping for both the results and your contacts but it is well worth it. We will cover the basic biology and terminology used in analyzing the four types of DNA (Y-DNA, mtDNA, autosomal DNA and X DNA), compare the three major DNA-testing companies with respect to advantages, disadvantages and prices, and discuss “ethnicity/admixture” results that the companies advertise. We will compare match lists and the analytical tools available at each company (or not). We will then introduce working with chromosome browsers and matrix tools and how to transfer results to the free site, GEDmatch, so that results from different companies can be compared. Dr. Sandy Murray presents Part II of "You Have Your DNA Matches - Now What?"  Utilizing DNA test results in our genealogy research is incredibly rewarding but initially can be very confusing. Sponsored by the Friends of Memorial Hall Library

The Keys to Focus, Organization, and Performance from Preschool through College
Presented by Adam J. Cox, Ph.D.

The education of youth must transcend traditional notions of intelligence. Harnessing the power of executive functions is the best way to active a person’s full capability, as it pertains to both academic and social development. Building executive functions is part of a child-centered approach to education, emphasizing the benefits of dynamic brain development and the power of learned behavior. Many have said that it is the single most important concept in child development today – the fulcrum on which success tilts.

This presentation will address the eight pillars of executive function (Initiation, Attention, Flexibility, Working Memory, Organization, Planning, Self-monitoring, Emotional Control), as described in Dr. Cox's book, No Mind Left Behind. Cox will discuss in detail how to help youth navigate important developmental hurdles, both academic and social, that are caused by aspects of executive dysfunction.

Dr. Cox will focus describe the elements of an ecology of attention – and how schools and families can integrate these elements into a positive, effective approach to coaching young learners.

Cox's ideas have been incorporated by families and schools worldwide. No Mind Left Behind is translated into multiple languages, and was the first trade book on executive functions published in North America. His practical advice emphasizes immediate, measurable steps for improving academic achievement. Each of his pillars of executive function is amply illustrated with “real life” examples, and many academic coaching strategies. Please do not miss this unique opportunity to learn how to build the capability of the important young people in your life.

Ted Reinstein returns to MHL to discuss his new book, Wicked Pissed: New England's Most Famous Feuds. New England is as dotted with colorful and fascinating feuds as it is with low stone walls and big, red barns. And many of them go back just as far! For instance, did you know that the Breeds and the Bunkers are still fighting over a hill? Or that the revolution is still being fought—by Lexington and Concord?! From the colonial era, through early aviation (CT claims the Wright Bros. are wrong), to Red Sox-Yankees and present-day food fights, Ted Reinstein tells us who’s really “Wicked Pissed” in New England, and why. Copies of the book will be available for sale.
