7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Gardening is Murder: An Evening with Mystery Author Neal Sanders
    Contact: Reference   978-623-8401 x31   rdesk@mhl.org

Mystery author, Neal Sanders presents his program, Gardening Is Murder, a ‘husband’s point of view’ of gardening.  It is filled with humor and insight from someone who gardens less from an abiding love of horticulture than for the love of a spouse.  Good horticultural advice is dispensed, bad advice is debunked.   Some of what you'll learn:

  • Why it is impossible to do just one thing in the garden
  • Why so much gardening information on the internet is awful
  • Why you should never compute the value of your labor in gardening
  • Evidence that the wildlife in your garden have never seen a Disney film
  •  Why it requires digging three holes to plant something
  • And much more…

Neal Sanders retired from the corporate world in 2005. His 'second act' is as a writer of mysteries. His ninth book, Murder in Negative Space has just been released and joins A Murder in the Garden Club, A Murder at the Flower Show, Murder Imperfect, The Garden Club Gang, Deal Killer, Deadly Deeds and The Accidental Spy. Neal and his wife, Betty maintain a two-acre garden in Medfield, Massachusetts, that has been part of the Garden Conservancy's Open Days program and featured in the Wall Street Journal. Betty is a Lifetime Master Gardener, horticulturalist, and noted gardening lecturer. Neal's blog is The Principal Undergardener.

    Contact: Reference   978-623-8401 x31   rdesk@mhl.org

Fish On! Andover features fishing videos from 6-7pm, door prizes at 7pm, followed by a seminar.

Lying in the southern Argentine Patagonia is a very wild and rugged landscape strewn with extraordinary prehistoric lava rocks. It is here that resides a remote lake, Lago Strobel (aka Jurassic Lake) and home to some of the largest and wildest rainbow trout found anywhere on this planet. This amazing trout fishery had its beginnings in the mid 90's when the only river, the Rio Barrancoso, was stocked with hatchery-raised Kamloops rainbows (Girard Strain), a hearty North American strain that grow fast and live longer. These rainbows thrived in the cold water lake environment, where the relentless wind continually stirs the surface, adding much oxygen. During the summer months (Nov-April), the trout return to the Rio Barrancoso to spawn and later return to the lake. The lake is also home to an abundant food source rich in freshwater shrimp and snails. Lacking predation, these amazing rainbows average in size from 8-12 pounds, with some monsters pushing past 20 pounds and best of all, they're very eager to eat a well presented fly.

Captain Skip Montello (USCG licensed) is a full time charter captain and fishes from Cape Ann to the Merrimack River www.northcoastangler.com. Skip is a passionate fly and light tackle angling professional with a lifetime of experience fishing New England waters for stripers, blues and bluefin tuna. He has also fished the Florida Keys for tarpon, the Great Lakes tributaries for salmon and steelhead, Alaska, Newfoundland, Argentina and British Columbia for salmon and trout. Skip writes a monthly Insider Column for On the Water Magazine, covering Cape Ann to the New Hampshire border. Skip was recently featured on an On The Water TV segment.

“Poor Howard" Stith has performed 12-string barrelhouse blues on guitar for over forty years, in a style drawn from the tradition of Huddie Ledbetter (Leadbelly) and Blind Willy McTell. His guitar work and poignant vocals carry audiences into the world of rowdy barrelhouses, or the fields, at the end of a long day of weeding crops. Harmonica player, Mike "Bullfrog" Rogers, a forty year veteran whose styles range from folk to blues, has opened for John Hammond, Luther "Guitar" Johnson and Emmie Lou Harris.    7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM We Are Market Basket: An Evening with Grant Welker
    Contact: Reference   978-623-8401 x31   rdesk@mhl.org

Lowell Sun reporter, Grant Welker will discuss the book he co-wrote with Daniel Korschun, We Are Market Basket: The Story of the Unlikely Grassroots Movement That Saved a Beloved Business. What if a company were so treasured and trusted that people literally took to the streets—by the thousands—to save it? That company is Market Basket, a popular New England supermarket chain.

After long-time CEO Arthur T. Demoulas was ousted by his cousin Arthur S. Demoulas, the company's managers and rank-and-file workers struck back. Risking their own livelihoods to restore the job of their beloved boss, they walked out, but they didn't walk far. At huge protest rallies, they were joined by loyal customers—leaving stores empty. Suppliers and vendors stopped deliveries—rendering shelves bare. Politicians were forced to take sides. The national media and experts were stunned by the unprecedented defense of an executive. All openly challenged the Market Basket board of directors to make things right. And, in the end, they prevailed.

With its arresting firsthand accounts from the streets and executive suites, We Are Market Basket is as inspiring as it is instructive. What is it about Market Basket and its leader that provokes such ferocious loyalty? How does a company spread across three states maintain a culture that embraces everyone—from cashier to customer—as family? Can a company really become an industry leader by prioritizing stakeholders over shareholders?

Set against a backdrop of bad blood and corporate greed, We Are Market Basket is, above all, a page-turner that chronicles the epic rise, fall, and redemption of this iconic and uniquely American company.

Daniel Korschun is an Associate Professor of Marketing at Drexel University's LeBow College of Business and a Fellow at the Center for Corporate Reputation Management. Grant Welker covered the Market Basket story from the start as a reporter for the Lowell Sun. His coverage included about 80 news articles for The Sun, and earned him two New England Newspaper & Press Association business-reporting awards. He has also been recognized for prior reporting on education, social issues, crime, transportation and the environment. Grant was previously a reporter at the Herald News in Fall River, and has worked in journalism for nearly 10 years. He has a bachelor’s in journalism from the University of Connecticut and lives in Boston with his wife, Angela.

This month's Night Readers selection will be Echo by Pamela Munoz Ryan.  "Lost and alone in a forbidden forest, Otto meets three mysterious sisters and suddenly finds himself entwined in a puzzling quest involving a prophecy, a promise, and a harmonica.  Decades later, Friedrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania, and Ivy in California each, in turn, become interwoven when the very same harmonica lands in their lives. All the children face daunting challenges: rescuing a father, protecting a brother, holding a family together. And ultimately, pulled by the invisible thread of destiny, their suspenseful solo stories converge in an orchestral crescendo."

7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Rita Wollmering: Organic Vegetable Gardening
    Contact: Reference   978-623-8401, x31   rdesk@mhl.org

Backyard gardening offers an economical way to have nutritious, safe local food and make positive contributions to the environment. Topics will cover basic organic growing principles as well as practical steps to build your soil, fight diseases and manage pests. Learn the growing requirements (soil, sunlight, water) of different types of vegetables as well as tips for planting, harvesting and preserving. Ideas are applicable at any scale - from patio containers to large garden plots.

Rita Wollmering is the founder, manager and grower of The HERB FARMacy, a 10 acre certified organic farm and retail plant nursery in Salisbury, offering over 800 varieties of potted herbs, flowers, native plants and vegetables. She grew up on her family’s 500 acre dairy farm in Minnesota. Like some farm kids, she wanted to experience the wide world, so she joined the Peace Corps and worked on agricultural projects in the Philippines. After her graduate studies, Rita continued her international work with USDA and USAID in Washington, DC until her urge to get “back to the farm” led her to pursue her herb farming ambitions. While working year round on the farm and greenhouses, she takes her “break” doing international volunteer work on the USAID Farmer-to-Farmer Program, most recently working with medicinal herb production in Nepal and Sri Lanka.

So you attended the first Scriptwriting class and now have a handle on the basics.  What's next?  It's time to fine-tune your work!  Ask any writer, and they'll tell you that scripts go through multiple rewrites - this gives the writer a chance to bounce ideas off of other people, and make sure that they're squeezing as much out of the script as possible!  Come to this session with a completed script, semi-completed script, or a page of notes, and you'll be that much more ready to draw up your storyboard (the storyboard program is on 4/27/16).  This is the second of two classes.  Teens are encouraged to bring their own laptops, if they have them.  Need a laptop to attend?  Talk to Anna or Rebecca.
