   7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Andover Reads 2016: Theater of the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s
    Contact: Reference   978-623-8401 x31   rdesk@mhl.org

The 1930s through the 1950s represent a great period of American theatrical history. The influence of, and reaction to, the Great Depression is evident in the work of William Saroyan. The 1940s saw the talent of three great playwrights emerge who dominated the theater, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, and Eugene O'Neill. All three examine dysfunctional families and the American dream gone awry. In 1954, N. Richard Nash's play The Rainmaker opened at the Cort Theater in New York City. The character Starbuck charmed audiences with his brand of con and hucksterism.

Stephen Collins, an actor, lecturer, and tour guide performs monologues from these and other playwrights and may even sing a Cole Porter and George Gershwin tune to round off the evening.

Sponsored by the Friends of MHL. This program is part of their Annual Meeting. All are welcome.

    Contact: Reference   978-623-8401, x31   rdesk@mhl.org

Rúben Pascoal Sança is a distance runner who represented Cape Verde at the 2012 London Olympic Games. He currently resides in the city of Lowell and is training to represent Cape Verde at the 2016 Olympic Games in the marathon, an event in which he owns a national record of 2:18:47.

At the age of 12, he migrated with his family from Cape Verde to the U.S. in search of the American Dream. He attended the Dearborn and O'Bryant schools in Roxbury, where he first developed a strong passion for the sport of track and field. In 2005 he received an athletic scholarship to run at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell). As a River Hawk student-athlete, Sança was a 4-time All American and 3-time New England champion. Sança’s his biggest accomplishment came in 2009 when he became the first person in his family to graduate from college - earning a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and a minor in Economics. Two years later, at the age of 23, he was the youngest graduate from the Manning School of Business with an M.B.A. degree. Today, he serves as the Associate Director for Student Affairs Financial Administration at his alma mater, working with more than 200 student services and organizations.

7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM An Evening with Author Peter Grinspoon, M.D.
    Contact: Reference   978-623-8401, x31   rdesk@mhl.org

By any measure, Dr. Peter Grinspoon was a success: a Harvard-educated M.D. with a thriving practice; two great kids and an accomplished wife; a pillar of his community. However, beneath that picture-perfect façade, he was an addict secretly consuming dangerous amounts of prescription medication every day. And when two detectives showed up at his office after a suspicious pharmacist busted him for filling a prescription in the name of his eighteen-year-old nanny, the façade crumbled.

Having lied his way to success for years, despite his addiction, he believed he could manage his way out of this mess by fiat. Instead, he wound up in rehab with an unlikely mix of medical professionals and OxyContin and heroin addicts. His ego and the disease of addiction kept him see-sawing precariously between relapse and recovery—with his family and career in freefall—until he finally truly hit bottom. Free Refills is the harrowing, moving, and darkly funny story of how Grinspoon finally overcame his addiction to live honestly (and cleanly), became a much more compassionate doctor, and even came to counsel other physicians struggling with addiction.

About The Author: Peter Grinspoon, M.D. currently practices as a primary care physician at an inner city clinic in Boston and is on staff at Mass General Hospital. He teaches medicine at Harvard Medical School, and today he is proudly nine years clean.

His book will be available for purchase, courtesy of the Andover Bookstore.

The Athlete in Art through the Ages: From Myron's Discobolus to Eakins's Rowers

In ancient Greek civilization, Olympians embodied the ideals of physical strength and moral virtue, and therefore served as the perfect subject for sculptors to capture, both in marble and in bronze. This lecture will explore artists' fascination with the subject of sport from antiquity up to the present day, focusing on key examples in American art, including Thomas Eakins's rowing and boxing series and Eadweard Muybridge's photographic studies of the body in motion.

World Champion rower, US Paralympic coach, and Lawrence native, Ellen Minzner, will share her experience breaking through to the elite level of the sport, and about her current role coaching athletes with disabilities to the Paralympics in Rio in September 2016.  Her passion for rowing developed during her sophomore year in college at Villanova University, and after graduation, she went on to win the 1995 world championships in lightweight pair (two female rowers) in Tampere, Finland, and took another gold medal at the 1996 worlds in Scotland. She helped start a rowing program in Lawrence that began with just six kids, and has grown to over 80 youth from the Merrimack Valley. She served as the executive director of the Greater Lawrence Community Boating Program, and founder of both the Greater Lawrence Rowing Club and the Lawrence Celebration Regatta. She is currently the outreach director for Community Rowing Boston (CRI), a non-profit organization with a mission of "Rowing for All."  As the director of the Row Boston, Adaptive Rowing, and Veterans Rowing programs there, Ellen facilitates program development and support for long-term growth and sustainability. Her goal is to provide the highest-level experience to people without traditional access to the water.  And of course, to win in Rio.

Author Kristen Harnisch will discuss her newest book, The California Wife, the sequel to The Vintner's Daughter. Both a sequel and a stand-alone, it begins in the same scene in which her first novel ended. Harnisch takes readers back to 1897, when Sara Thibault has returned to France following the devastating end to her relationship with Philippe Lemieux, the vintner with whom she fell in love in California.Reunited and soon to be wed, Sara and Philippe struggle to manage two vineyards, his much-esteemed Eagle’s Run in Napa Valley and her humble family vineyard, St. Martin, in the Loire Valley. Philippe, used to making his own decisions, doesn’t always include Sara, and she, fully aware of her talents as a vintner, challenges his omissions head-on at home and in the streets with other Suffragettes. Troubles abound: the specter of Prohibition threatens their livelihood as do rival vintners, and ghosts from Philippe’s past might unravel the family he has just begun to build. As tensions mount, Sara welcomes the proximity of her dear friend Marie, a midwife who is the first woman selected to study surgery at Cooper Medical College in San Francisco. From managing a new marriage to managing new businesses, from the Paris World’s Fair in 1900 to a small vineyard in France, from the rough streets of San Francisco to its newest college, Sara and her family charge into the 20th century—and readers will readily follow, rooting for them through every page. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Kristen Harnisch drew upon her extensive research and her experiences living in San Francisco and visiting the Loire Valley and Paris to create the stories for her novels. Ms. Harnisch has a degree in economics from Villanova University and currently resides in Connecticut with her husband and three children.
