    Contact: Reference   978-623-8430   rdesk@mhl.org

Andover resident, outdoor enthusiast and longtime open space advocate, Al French, will lead a guided hike in Den Rock Park. The park is located on Route 114, across from the North Andover Plaza (Market Basket). Participants should bring water, wear sunscreen/bug spray and appropriate footwear. Heavy rain cancels the event. Meet in the parking lot. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required.

Den Rock Park is a 120-acre wooded preserve that includes walking trails, a granite rock face with fissures perfect for technical climbing, scenic overlooks, and access to the Shawsheen River. The park is owned by the City of Lawrence, the Town of Andover and the Merrimack River Watershed Council. The land was first purchased for a cemetery in 1877 but was designated as a city park in 1896. In the 1930s, the park was improved by workers with the Civilian Conservation Corps, who installed rock steps, two amphitheaters, a boardwalk, and numerous trails. In 1995 an Andover Town Meeting approved rezoning property abutting the park from industrial to residential. Subsequent residential development produced significant additional protected open space on the park’s western border. In the summer of 2003, the Student Conservation Association created an attractive stone pathway leading from Andover’s Stirling Street into the park. In 2004, the City of Lawrence and Groundwork Lawrence built a new visitor parking area at the Route 114 entrance to the park. In the summer of 2005, the City of Lawrence and Groundwork Lawrence implemented the first phase of trail improvements and installed new trail signage throughout the park.

7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Sail Low On the World: An Evening with Aline Dargie
    Contact: Reference   978-623-8430   rdesk@mhl.org

Aline Dargie visits her hometown of Andover to share 'slow journalism' stories, made by sailboat in the remote and mythical Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia.

About Project SLOW:

A sailing couple, Aline Dargie (25, captain & artist from Andover, Massachusetts) and Julien Girardot (37, photographer and chef from St Malo, France), have embarked on a voyage named SLOW (Sail Low On the World) – an ecological project using multimedia journalism - on the remote islands of French Polynesia in the South Pacific. Through sailing, walking, horseback riding, swimming, paddling - voyaging using slow, low impact methods of traveling throughout these islands – they take the time to dive deep into local and evolving traditional ways of life.

“Before sharing islander’s stories, we build confidence and respect through listening and respecting the subjects of our reportage, to represent them in the truest light possible.  In this process, we build deeper understandings of the unique evolution of culture on each of these diverse islands” -Aline

Beginning in 2016 and continuing to 2019, Aline and Julien will sail to French Polynesia’s five archipelagos aboard their small Edelcat 35 catamaran named "Pizza",  anchoring at many of the 118 islands, covering an oceanic territory as large as Europe. The voyage evolves through connections with local artists, sustainable fishermen, community activists; people thriving from and respecting these tropical paradises. The video, text and photos are edited aboard
Pizza, propelled by wind and powered by sun.

Follow project SLOW to learn about living traditions that resist and evolve with modernity, soar through landscapes from a drone’s point of view, experience verdant and deep colors, and dramatic contrast – metaphorical and physical – that  exist only here... starting in the Marquesas archipelago. @slowmarquesas

Aline Dargie (b. 1991, Andover) has a passion for learning and documenting everything handmade and ‘slow.’ She earned a bachelor's degree in textile fine arts from California College of the Arts, then co-founded and directed Make Hang for three years, an atelier in San Francisco featuring upcoming artists making sculptural, interactive installations. In the gallery, diverse locals enjoyed yoga, DIY art workshops, and slow food dinners. Since departing San Francisco on a sailboat in 2013, Aline has sailed over 15,000 miles in the Pacific, studied astro-navigation and earned a Royal Yacht Academy Yachtmaster certificate. Aline was the captain for the traditional Polynesian sailing project Va’a Motu on Fakarava atoll, and is now the captain of catamaran Pizza and journalist for Project Slow. Currently, Aline is on assignment for GEO France Magazine, making a grand reportage on the Marquesas Islands with photographer Julien Girardot. Facebook & Instagram: @slowmarquesas / alinedargie.com

This month's Night Readers selection will be El Deafo by Cece Bell.

"Starting at a new school is scary, even more so with a giant hearing aid strapped to your chest! At her old school, everyone in Cece's class was deaf. Here she is different. She is sure the kids are staring at the Phonic Ear, the powerful aid that will help her hear her teacher. Too bad it also seems certain to repel potential friends.
Then Cece makes a startling discovery. With the Phonic Ear she can hear her teacher not just in the classroom, but anywhere her teacher is in school--in the hallway...in the teacher's lounge...in the bathroom! This is power. Maybe even superpower! Cece is on her way to becoming El Deafo, Listener for All. But the funny thing about being a superhero is that it's just another way of feeling different... and lonely. Can Cece channel her powers into finding the thing she wants most, a true friend?"
