    Contact: Reference   978-623-8430   rdesk@mhl.org

Are you living a life by your own conscious design?  Has everything been placed just right to give you the balance, space and time needed to help you flourish?  Would you say you are thriving, or surviving?

It is so easy to get caught up in the right now, that we lose focus of what we really want and need in our lives.  We seldom have the time and space to take a pause, breathe and focus on what we want our life to look like and how we want to spend our valuable time.

Join our presenter, Jennessa Durrani, for a fun, two hour, interactive workshop to help you set your sights on your life by design and begin to put the pieces together.

The evening will include fun exercises and guided meditation with the goal of leaving with a clear view of how you want your future to look--what you want to avoid--and what you can't wait to add.

Jennessa Durrani is an entrepreneur, business owner, wife and mother to two crazy boys.  Along with leading her booming corporate event planning company—Celebrate that she founded 15 years ago; Jennessa works closely with women to help them design the life they want to live through her blog, public speaking, workshops, and online programs. Her audiences benefit from her extensive business background and creative flair. And they can't help but have fun along the way, as Jennessa lends her positive personality, exceptional humor, and high energy to every project and engagement.

Before starting her first business, Jennessa spent 10 years at a corporate interior design and architecture firm in Boston. She worked in several areas of the company over this decade, including design, sales, marketing, project management, and operations management. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Iowa State University's College of Design and an MBA from Northeastern University. She graduated Summa Cum Laude and was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society - the highest honor a business student can receive.

Jennessa has been published in The Boston Business Journal, More, Women’s Business, The Andovers and the Andover Townsman and pens a blog as Just Jennessa sharing her ideas, tips and hacks for helping busy families. Celebrate has been recognized by the Boston Business Journal as one of the top 25 Event Management firms in the Boston area for more than 10 years.

I Am Not Your Negro is a film by master documentary filmmaker, Raoul Peck, that envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin's original words and a flood of rich archival material. It’s a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter. A facilitated discussion will follow the screening.

Do the names “Chet and Natalie,” “Liz, Jack and Lobel” and TV showman Tom Ellis ring a bell?  All were part of a historic era in television when of the 200 TV markets in the country, only one—Boston --was the site of a Golden Age in news and programming. In this lively insider account, Terry Ann Knopf traces its origins in the 1970s through its decline in the early 1990s. She also deals with pivotal events such as TV coverage of the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster and Governor Mike Dukakis' 1988 run for president.

The stations were hardly perfect, though. Knopf also delves into how Boston TV stations largely failed during the Boston’s clerical sex abuse scandal and how the persistence of racism and sexism manifested itself within Boston’s TV stations.

Terry Ann Knopf has worked as a TV critic for the Miami Herald and the Patriot Ledger, and was also a Boston Globe correspondent specializing in television. Her freelance pieces have appeared in Columbia Journalism Review, the New York Times, and Boston magazine, and in numerous scholarly journals. A three-time winner for Best TV Critic in Boston magazine’s annual Best-of-Boston awards, she was also voted Best Columnist by the New England Women’s Press Association. She has been a longtime lecturer in Boston University’s journalism department.

Wish your food was more sustainable but still as tasty as ever?  Join us as we learn from food writer Christine Burns Rudalevige, author of Green Plate Special: Sustainable and Delicious Recipes, how to transition our plates to be greener and yet still very tasty.

Christine will speak about the basic tenets of transforming a much loved recipe into one that still holds the flavor of the tried and true recipe, but has incorporated sourcing, energy conservation and food and water waste reduction principals to make the dish more sustainable.

Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite recipes to rework at the workshop. No prior reading necessary.

Christine Burns Rudalevige has been working as a journalist for over 25 years, covering sports, politics, technology and business from Berkshire County to Boston and Silicon Valley to Western Europe.

She honed her cooking chops in kitchens in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, England and France before moving to Maine, where she founded the Family Fish Project (a website dedicated to eating seafood at home) and worked as a lead culinary instructor at Stonewall Kitchen.

Since 2009, the dedicated home cook and food writer has been lending her voice to regional and national media outlets, from NPR, The Philadephia Inquirer, Edible New Hampshire and Edible Maine to Fine Cooking, Food52.com and Coastal Table.

For the past three years, Rudalevige has written a staggering number of sustainable food related articles and recipes for the Portland Press Herald/Sunday Telegram, a body of work that has resulted the publication of her first book, Green Plate Special with Islandport Press (May 2017).

Rudalevige was born in Western Massachusetts, graduated from Lee High School in 1986, received a BA in English from Fairfield University in 1990, and earned a culinary degree from Le Cordon Bleu School of Culinary Arts in Pittsburg in 2010. She currently lives in Brunswick, Maine, with her husband, Andrew; her two teenage children, Owen and Eliza; and a lovely lab/hound mutt named Theodore Roosevelt Rudalevige.

Author and garden writer, Marta McDowell will share her latest book, The World of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House series chronicled frontier life starting in the late 1860s. The classic books are both a coming of age story and a reflection of the pioneer spirit of the time. They are also deeply rooted in the natural world—the plants, animals, and landscapes are integral to the stories. The World of Laura Ingalls Wilder considers Wilder’s life and her relationship to the natural world. Looking into Wilder's world also illuminates our own relationship to the nature, family, and memory. Featuring original art by Helen Sewell and Garth Williams and historical images, maps, botanical illustrations, and contemporary photographs. Copies of the book will be available for sale courtesy of the Andover Bookstore.

Marta McDowell lives, writes and gardens in Chatham, New Jersey. She shares her garden with her husband, Kirke Bent, their crested cockatiel, Sydney, and assorted wildlife. Her garden writing has appeared in popular publications such as Woman’s Day,Country Gardening and The New York Times. Scholars and specialists have read her essays on American authors and their horticultural interests in the journals Hortus and Arnoldia.

Timber Press published McDowell's All the Presidents' Gardens, a book that relates the history of American gardening as seen through the White House grounds. It made The New York Times bestseller list and won an American Horticultural Society book award in 2017. Following the relationship between the pen and the trowel led Marta to children's author/illustrator Beatrix Potter and poet Emily Dickinson. Timber Press published Marta’s book, Beatrix Potter's Gardening Life, in 2013. It won the Gold Award from the Garden Writers Association in August 2014. Emily Dickinson’s Gardens was published by McGraw-Hill in 2005. If you visit the Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst, Massachusetts, you can stroll the grounds with a landscape audio tour that Marta scripted. She was an advisor for the New York Botanical Garden's 2010 show, "Emily Dickinson's Gardens: The Poetry of Flowers," and worked with Chicago Botanic Garden's Lenhardt Library on a Beatrix Potter exhibit in 2016.

Marta teaches landscape history and horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden where she has been twice awarded "Instructor of the Year." A popular lecturer, she has been a featured speaker at locations ranging from the Arnold Arboretum to the Philadelphia Flower Show to the Beatrix Potter Society's Linder Lecture at the Sloane Club in London. With artist Yolanda Fundora, Marta wrote "A Garden Alphabetized (for your viewing pleasure)" in 2008.

Marta interned at Wave Hill, Frelinghuysen Arboretum, the Royal Horticultural Society’s Rosemoor in Devon, England and at the Chelsea Physic Garden. She worked as a horticulturist for five years at Reeves-Reed Arboretum. Marta is on the Board of the NJ Historical Garden Foundation at the Cross Estate in Bernardsville, NJ. She received the 2016 Annual Award from the Friends of Frelinghuysen Arboretum. Her garden is included in the Smithsonian's Archive of American Gardens.

This educational program will highlight the stories of four of our transgender neighbors as they discuss the challenges and joys of living authentically. The discussion will be moderated by Michelle Jane Tat, a queer transgender activist, who sits on the executive committee for the Mass Trans Political Coalition (MTPC). A data scientist for the City of Boston, she has dedicated her activism to improve the lives of other transgender individuals across Massachusetts.

A second panelist will be Kaden Avery Mohamed. Originally from NYC, Kaden studied Women’s and Gender Studies and Education Studies at Wellesley College. During his time at Wellesley, Kaden was able to begin exploring and understanding his interests in social justice and anti-oppressive work, which in turn helped him understand and be comfortable with his own gender identity as a part of the trans community. He works full time at Keshet, an organization working for the full equality and inclusion of LGBTQ Jews in Jewish life, and sits on the Steering Committee of the Mass Trans Political Coalition (MTPC).

The evening will include two other panelists and time for questions and answers after the presentations.

DNA testing for ancestry has exploded in popularity due to aggressive marketing campaigns and lower prices.  But, is genetic testing the right choice for you?  This presentation will explore the kinds of questions testing can and cannot answer, and advise how to choose the best test and the best provider for your particular goals.  Issues such as privacy, accuracy, the potential for discovery of unexpected results, and the importance of being an informed consumer will also be discussed.

Jennifer Stone Randolph is the owner of New Hampshire-based Touchstone Genealogy, a provider of professional genealogical services with a focus on the use of DNA testing.  Jennifer has over ten years’ experience in genealogy, and holds certificates in Genealogical Research (Boston University) and Genetic Genealogy (Excelsior College).  Jennifer also works as a Research Scientist for the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, and holds a B.A. in Anthropology and an M.Sc. in Epidemiology.  Jennifer particularly enjoys genetic genealogy as it combines her passions for science, family, and solving mysteries!

Scotland’s population is smaller than Massachusetts, but it has produced millions of emigrants who have settled in all parts of the world. Immigration to New England began as early as 1651 with the arrival of Scots prisoners from the Battle of Dunbar, and has continued down to recent times. Scottish genealogical records are among the most complete and comprehensive of any European country, and anyone with ancestors who arrived in the 1850s or later is almost certain to have success in tracing them back to their parish of origin. Learn about the basic steps in undertaking Scottish genealogy, what genealogical records exist and how to access them as well as Andover’s role in Scottish emigration.”

Originally from Andover, David Dearborn joined the NEHGS staff in 1976 and worked there for 38 years before retiring as Senior Genealogist. His research interests include Scottish ancestry, families of Essex County, MA as well as Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont genealogy.  He has recently returned from a research trip to Scotland and Ireland.

2:30 PM  -  4:00 PM Friends' Concert Series: Sandro Russo
    Contact: Reference   978-623-8430   rdesk@mhl.org

Acclaimed Italian-born concert pianist, Sandro Russo, is best known for his idiomatic interpretations of the romantic piano literature. His program will showcase multiple facets of the 19th and 20th century repertoire.

Acclaimed for his profound sense of poetry and distinctive style, Russo has been in demand as a soloist in many venues around the world. He unanimously receives accolades for his sparkling virtuosity and his playing has often been referred to as a throwback to the grand tradition of elegant pianism and beautiful sound. Composer Lowell Liebermann wrote of him, “Sandro Russo is a musician's musician and a pianist's pianist. There is no technical challenge too great for him, but it is his musicianship that ultimately makes the greatest impression. His interpretations reveal a unique and profound artist at work.”

Born in San Giovanni Gemini, Italy, Mr. Russo displayed exceptional musical talent from an early age. In 1995, he graduated summa cum laude from the V. Bellini Conservatory, and earned the Pianoforte Performing Diploma from the Royal College of Music in London with honors. Soon after Mr. Russo moved to the United States in 2000, he won the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra Concerto Competition, and has ever since performed in such prestigious concert halls as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Weill and Zankel halls at Carnegie Hall, Salle Cortot in Paris, Teatro Politeama in Palermo and the Konzerthaus Berlin.

His recitals include performances for The Rachmaninoff Society, the Dame Myra Hess series in Chicago, Concerts Grand in Santa Rosa (CA), the American Liszt Society, the Houston International Piano Festival, the Husum Festival of Piano Rarities in Germany and the Chetham's International Piano Festival in Manchester (U.K.), among others.

Mr. Russo has appeared as a soloist with the Slovak Philharmonic in Bratislava, the Jacksonville Symphony in Florida and the Brussels Chamber Orchestra at the opening gala of The Music Festival of the Hamptons in 2008. He also gave three highly praised performances of the Rachmaninoff 3rd Concerto in Palermo, Italy and was the featured soloist with the New York Asian Symphony for a Japan tour.

His performances have aired on major radio stations in the US and abroad. His latest recording, Rachmaninov – Solo Piano Works, released on the Steinway & Sons label, has received great critical acclaim and has been chosen “Disc of the Month” by Italy’s The Classic Voice magazine. He is a Steinway Artist. www.sandrorussopianist.com
