This month’s selection is "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family & Culture in Crisisby J.D. Vance. "From a former marine and Yale Law School graduate, a powerful account of growing up in a poor Rust Belt town that offers a broader, probing look at the struggles of America’s white working class. Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over forty years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J.D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck." -Amazon. New members always welcome!

6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM The Armenian Genocide in History and American Politics
    Contact: Libby Fox   508-946-2470   lfox@sailsinc.org

Bridgewater resident and retired history teacher Ray Ajemian will speak about, “The Armenian Genocide  in History and American Politics."

On the eve of World War I, there were roughly two million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire. By 1922, upwards of 1.5 million of them had been killed and most of the rest scattered to other parts of the world. Despite pressure from historians, governments, social justice groups, and even the Pope, both the Turkish and United States governments refuse to admit that the Armenians were victims of a genocide.

Both of Ajemian’s parents are of Armenian decent and immigrated to the United States; his mother was a survivor of the genocide. Ajemian holds degrees in history specializing in the Middle East. Come learn about this controversial period in history and make sure the world does not forget.

Ray welcomes questions during and after his talk, which is free and open to the public.

This month’s selection is "The Unquiet Dead" by Ausma Zehanat Khan "Despite their many differences, Detective Rachel Getty trusts her boss, Esa Khattak, implicitly. But she's still uneasy at Khattak's tight-lipped secrecy when he asks her to look into Christopher Drayton's death. Drayton's apparently accidental fall from a cliff doesn't seem to warrant a police investigation, particularly not from Rachel and Khattak's team, which handles minority-sensitive cases. But when she learns that Drayton may have been living under an assumed name, Rachel begins to understand why Khattak is tip-toeing around this case. It soon comes to light that Drayton may have been a war criminal with ties to the Srebrenica massacre of 1995.-Amazon.  Newcomers to the group are welcomed to attend!

This month’s selection is "The Days of Henry Thoreauby Walter Harding. "Henry David Thoreau is generally remembered as the author of Walden and "Civil Disobedience," a recluse of the woods and political protester who once went to jail. To his contemporaries he was a minor disciple of Emerson; he has since joined the ranks of America's most respected and beloved writers. Few, however, really know the complexity of the man they revere — wanderer and scholar, naturalist and humorist, teacher and surveyor, abolitionist and poet, Transcendentalist and anthropologist, inventor and social critic, and, above all, individualist." -Amazon. This month’s selection is "The Twentieth Day of January" also listed under the title "Cold Tactics" by Ted Allbeury. "It's 1980 and the Cold War continues to rage. Seemingly out of nowhere, wealthy businessman Logan Powell has become President-elect and is only weeks away from assuming the most powerful position in the world on the twentieth day of January. Across the Atlantic, veteran British intelligence agent James MacKay uncovers shocking evidence that suggests something might be terribly wrong with the election. With the help of a reluctant CIA, MacKay sets out on a dangerous and daring mission to discover if the unthinkable has occurred: is President-elect Powell actually a puppet of the Soviet Union?" -Amazon.
