Wotiz Gallery Exhibit: Winter Valley Collage Group
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

This month there will be a colorful display of collages shown in our gallery by the Winter Valley Collage Group.  This collaboration started sometime in 2015.  Liz O'Rourke is the Activities Coordinator at Winter Valley and a lifelong artist.  She had been creating collages for approximately 5 years under the tutelage of Sandra Shuman, a collage artist, friend and instructor and was excited about a new piece.  Liz showed it to Abe Salzman, an artist and resident of Winter Valley.  He loved the idea of collage, and a week later he showed Liz his first collage piece.  He was inspired and on fire!  From there, Abe introduced collage to other residents, offering free instruction and guidance in a weekly workshop.  There have been several collage showings at Winter Valley and one at Fuller Village Brush Hill recently.  Abe has also instructed collage classes at Simon C. Fireman's House in Randolph and Unquity House in Milton.  The collages are made from cut-out paper images taken from magazines, old books and other assorted media.  Rubber cement and glue sticks are used to adhere the paper pieces and other items to foamcore, matboard or card stock.  For more information, contact Liz O'Rourke at (617) 755-3560 and please don't miss this lovely exhibit during July at the Library.  The names of the artists are: Abe Salzman, Mark Whall, Mary Douglas, Robert Turner, Charlene McLellan, Peggy Walsh and Liz O'Rourke.  There will be a free and open reception also held for this exhibit on Thursday evening, July 19th, from 6-8 PM in the Gallery where you can meet all these talented artists. Please join us.

Celebrate Libraries Rock with us during this fun and educational program all about the science of sound!

Music and all sorts of merry sounds engage students in sound experiments and live demonstrations showing the properties and transmission of sound waves. Students listen to sounds made with solid materials—from plastic, to metal, to string. Ordinary objects like handheld horns, metal screws, wooden ratchets and beads transform into a story sound-effect symphony. Electronic devices reveal frequency when a pitch-changing machine alters the students’ voices to gruff monsters or happy chipmunks. (K to 6)

For ages 6-11; registration is required and will open two weeks prior to the event. Sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Thousands of restaurants have come and gone on Cape Cod over the past century. Some, however, made an indelible mark. Bill and Thelma's was hugely popular with students from the 1950s to the 1970s, often packed with locals after sporting events and dances. Starbuck's Restaurant in Hyannis featured the Chief Justice Warren Burger Burger and the Larry Bird Burger on its menu and boasted of the soup du jour, "We don't know what it is, but we have it every day." Opinions differ on how the Reno Diner actually got its name, whether from a broken sign or a local appliance company.

In his book, Historic Restaurants of Cape Cod, Author Christopher Setterlund details the history of the iconic establishments of the Cape, still fresh in the memories of patrons, complete with famous recipes.

2:30 PM  -  4:00 PM Readers' Theatre Club Gr. 2-4*
    Contact: Children's Room   617-698-5757   struog@ocln.org

Readers' Theatre is a a type of drama performed by "readers" who read from a script and do not have to memorize lines.  Performed with minimal costumes, sets and props, readers' theatre can be not only a great introduction to theatre for kids, but it's also a great way to practice one's oral reading skills, build confidence, and have fun with friends at the same time!

This summer, Miss Sara is leading a Readers' Theatre Club for students entering grades 2-4.  Each week participants will play theatre games, tackle different scripts based on well-known children's books, and make crafts to supplement the stories we're telling together.  The Club will meet five times over the course of the summer, and each meeting will culminate with a performance for family and friends.  While this is a drop-off program, parents/caregivers are asked to return 15 minutes before the end of each class (at 3:45) so they can see the show!

Students must be fluent readers who have completed first grade.  Registration is required and will open two weeks before the event.

Tonight there will be a free screening of the film "Paris Can Wait" directed by Eleanor Coppola and starring Diane Lane, Arnaud Viard and Alec Baldwin.    Anne is at a crossroads in her life.  Long married to a successful, driven, but inattentive movie producer, she unexpectedly finds herself taking a road trip from Cannes to Paris with a business associate of her husband.  What should be a seven-hour drive turns into a two-day adventure complete with picturesque sights, fine food and wine, humor, wisdom and romance, reawakening Anne's senses and giving her a new lust for life.  This is a great story and it is rated PG for "thematic elements, smoking and some language."  The running time is 92 minutes.  Come enjoy the cool library during July and check out this program, which is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Wotiz Gallery: Paintings by Modern Artist Jose Berrios
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

This month the Library will host talented painter Jose Berrios in the Wotiz Gallery.  Mr. Berrios was born in Puerto Rico and has lived in the Boston area since the seventies.  He attended Inter-American Universityin Puerto Rico for a Bachelors Degree in Education, and then received a Masters in Education from Antioch College in Ohio.  He has been living in Milton for about 30 years and is a self-taught artist, having worked as a Special Education teacher in the public schools as his career.  His paintings are very colorful and creative, and mostly abstract.  He uses oil paints to create them, and was "afraid of using strokes of paint" so started out using the technique of "punctualism" or dots to form the images.  This approach "makes the colors more interesting and they blend better" the artist says.  He also uses knives to create lines in his paintings for texture.  His body of work is very unique, bright and pretty fascinating to view.  There will be a reception for this exhibit which will soon be announced here.  And please come to the Library to check out this very cool display in August!

Leaves students astounded, amazed, and educated! They learn how magicians use our assumptions and perceptions about how the world works to entertain us. Discovering how to make objects disappear and reappear using optical illusions, polymers, mirrors, as well as hidden compartments, sleight-of-hand, and misdirection are part of the learning experience. The art of escape with Houdini’s chains and the power of perception with the crayon mind-reading trick are a few classics. .

For ages 6-11; registration is required and will open two weeks prior to the event. Sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

6:30 PM  -  8:30 PM Tuesday Night at the Movies: Marshall
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Tonight there will be a free screening of the excellent film "Marshall" which is a 2017 American biographical legal drama and stars Chadwick Boseman as Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice.  It focuses on one of the first cases of his career called "The State of Connecticut v. Joseph Spell."  In this true story, in 1940 Thurgood Marshall is an NAACP lawyer traveling the country defending people of color who are wrongly accused of crimes because of racial prejudice.  Upon the return to his New York office, he is sent to Bridgeport, CT to defend Joseph Spell (played by Sterling K. Brown), a chauffeur accused of rape by his white employer, Eleanor Strubing, in a case that has gripped the newspapers.  A Jewish insurance lawyer, Sam Friedman (Josh Gad) is assigned by his brother, against his will, to get Marshall admitted to the local bar.  At the hearing, the judge agrees to admit Marshall but forbids him to speak during the trial, forcing Friedman to be Spell's lead counsel.  This is an entertaining and inspiring biopic of a very human hero.   Please join us for this program, which is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.  The movie is 1 hour, 58 minutes in length and is rated PG-13 for "mature thematic content, sexuality, violence and some strong language."

This evening Library Director Will Adamczyk will hold his "Local History Book Chat."  (Please note the location will be the upstairs art gallery today.)  The book to be read in advance is The Big House by George Howe Colt (c2003). In this intimate and poignant history of a sprawling century-old summer house on Cape Cod, George Howe reveals not just one family's fascinating story - but a vanishing way of life.  Faced with the sale of the treasured house where he had spent 43 summers, he and his wife and children return for one last stay.  This wonderful tribute to the eleven-bedroom jumble of gables, bays, and dormers that has watched over weddings, divorces, deaths, anniversaries, birthdays, breakdowns, and love affairs for five generations interweaves Colt's final visit with memoirs of a lifetime of summers.  Run-down yet romantic, "The Big House" stands not only as a cherished reminder of summer's ephemeral pleasures but also as a powerful symbol of a vanishing way of life.    Please join Will for a discussion about a topic that often touches many of us as we grow up and leave our family homes..  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

   6:30 PM  -  7:30 PM Cookbook Club
    Contact: Sara Truog   617-898-4951   struog@ocln.org

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Monday, November 5 from 6:30-7:30pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for November is TBA.

In order to participate, please take these simple steps:

  • Please register through the library events calendar. Only registered cooks will be able to attend.
  • Borrow a copy of the book from the library and choose a dish. Books are available at the Circulation Desk one month ahead. (If you borrow a cookbook but won't be able to attend the meeting, please return the cookbook so someone else can check it out. Thank you!)
  • Once you've chosen your recipe, contact Sara by email (struog@ocln.org) or phone (617-898-4951) to let her know what recipe you’ll be trying so we don't have a lot of duplication in the dishes we'll sample on meeting night!

Space is limited and advance registration is required. Registration will open on Monday, October 15. Once you register you will receive more details about the club.  Bon Appetit!

This will be a wonderful presentation by Larry Spotted Crow Mann to celebrate Native American Month.  Mr. Mann is an award-winning writer/poet, performer, Nipmuc cultural educator, storyteller and citizen of the Nipmuc Tribe.  He travels from his home in Western Massachusetts throughout the United States, Canada, and part of Europe, to schools, colleges, Pow Wows, and other organizations sharing the music, culture, and history of Nipmuc people.  In 2010, his poetry won a competition in the Memescapes Journal of Fine Arts.  In 2013, his poetry was nominated for the Pushcart Prize.  Mann's Tales from the Whispering Basket is an internationally-acclaimed and compelling collection of short stories and poetry that has received excellent reviews.  His ground-breaking novel, The Mourning Road to Thanksgiving, won the 2015 WordCraft Circle of Native American Writers Award.  He hs also worked in collaboration with the Massachusett Department of Public Health to fight substance abuse.  Please join him to learn more about Native American history, music, literature and more in this compelling event.  The program is suitable for all ages and is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Native American Talk by Darius Coombs of Plimoth Plantation
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Darius Coombs, Director of Wampanoag Interpretation and Research at the Plimoth Plantation, will give a one-hour presentation this evening about the life and culture of the Wampanoag and Eastern Woodlands tribes.  Topics may include 17-century daily life, the environment, foodways, music and clothing.  Images and artifacts may also be used to illustrate this fascinating talk.  Native speakers wear modern dress and speak about Native life today as well as in the past.  This is an all ages program and we encourage you to bring your family!  It's a wonderful chance to learn more about this important topic.  Our host will be staff member Chris Callaghan, the event is free and open to the public, and this program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.
