Wotiz Gallery Exhibit: Photography by Leesha Boylan
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Starting on September lst, there will be a wonderful exhibit on display in the Wotiz Gallery by Milton photographer Leesha Boylan.  In this personal project,  which is called "Available Light: Exploring Americana Through New England Cottages," Ms. Boylan photographs objects found in antique cabins and cottages throughout New England, using only the available natural light and shooting the objects exactly as she found them.  These pieces of Americana from family cottages explore ideas around leisure, the passage of time, and nostalgia.  She is the photographer and owner of Leesha Haley Photography, shooting weddings, portraits, and events in the Boston area for the past 17 years.  Leesha has a BFA in Photography and Art  Education from Massachusetts College of Art and an M.Ed. from Bridgewater State University.  She sets out to document the loveliness in the world, creating a narrative and evoking emotion through the use of light, mood, and composition.  When she is not behind the lens, Leesha can be found in the classroom as a fine arts teacher in the Boston Public Schools.  She also loves adventuring near and far with her husband and two daughters.  There will be a free and open reception held on Thursday evening, October 18th from 6-8 PM, where you can come to the Gallery to meet the artist.  Please check out this interesting exhibit at the Library this Fall.

7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Author Talk: Alexis Clark Discusses Enemies in Love
    Contact: Dan Haacker

This evening there will be an author talk by journalism professor Alexis Clark about her new biography called "Enemies in Love" (New Press, c2018).  This is a true love story between a black army nurse who falls in love with a German prisoner of war in Arizona during World War II.  Elinor Powell was an African American nurse in the U.S. military who pulled a second-class assignment, in a dusty, sun-baked - and segregated - Western town.  Brought together by unlikely circumstances in a racist world, Elinor and Frederick Albert, a soldier in Hitler's army who was captured by the allies and shipped to a prisoner-of-war camp in the Arizona desert, fell in love - instead of becoming bitter enemies.  Their dramatic story was unearthed by journalist Alexis Clark, who through years of interviews and historical research, has pieced together an astounding narrative of race and true love in the cauldron of war.  Don't miss this interesting biographical talk by Professor Clark at the library. This event is jointly sponsored by the Milton Historical Society, the Milton Public Library and the Milton Junior Woman's Club.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PROGRAM WILL BE HELD AT THE MILTON ART CENTER, 334 EDGE HILL ROAD, MILTON.  THANK YOU.

The adults in the room particularly appreciate the Muppet-esque touches of humor and observations of kid behavior.  Whether you call it children's music, family music, kindie or toddlerbilly it's sure to please listeners of all ages. The most popular musical group in Scotland is a trio of rollicking musicians called "North Sea Gas" and we are lucky enough to catch them on tour in America!  They will perform this evening in a one-hour event which should not be missed,if you enjoy great entertainment.  North Sea Gas has been playing together for over 37 years and are stronger than ever!  With their great vocals and tremendous 3-part harmonies, guitars, mandolin, fiddle, bouzouki, harmonica, whistles, bodhrans, banjo and good humor, they have received Gold and Silver Disc awards from the Scottish Music Industry Association.  Their shows are regularly sold out at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and around the world.   "The band displays an attachment and a reverence for their roots from the very start.  The music feels genuine, unpretentious and spontaneous, with a fondness for storytelling and beautiful harmonies."  (Celtic Radio - Boston).  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and by the Milton Woman's Club, and is free and open to the public.  Don't miss this one!

Tonight there will be a free screening of the movie: "All the Money in the World" which stars Mark Wahlberg, Michell Williams and Christopher Plummer.  This true story follows the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty II (Charlie Plummer) and the desperate attempt by his devoted mother, Gail, to convince his billionaire grandfather to pay the ransom.  When Getty Sr. refuses, Gail attemps to sway him as her son's captors become increasingly volatile and brutal.  With her son's life in the balance, Gail and Gerry Sr.'s advisor become unlikely allies in the race against time that ultimately reveals the true and lasting value of love over money.  This film is rated R for "language, some violence, disturbing images and brief drug content" and the running time is 133 minutes.   The content is not suitable for children and it is the parents' decision whether to bring teens to the program.  This event is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Tonight there will be an early Halloween celebration for adults (although kids can come too!) to hear ghost stories told by Jeff Belanger, the Emmy-nominated host of PBs's "New England Legends," founder of the website www.Ghostvillage.com and Travel Channel's "Ghost Adventures" writer.  Belanger will offer stories, resesarch and evidence from around the world of ghost sightings, and for the last 19 years he has searched the world for paranormal legends that have seeped into folklore and even history books.  Jeff is the author of more than a dozen books on the paranormal that have been published in six languages.  He has lectured at libraries, universities, corporations, MENSA's national conference and other forums.  This talk will include images, audio clips and video plus a question and answer session for the audience.  He will also have autographed books available for purchase.  He says: "I can't wait to haunt the Milton Public Library.  We'll dim the lights, talk about the ghost experience and see the evidence and theories regarding the paranormal.  I've spoken on the topic of the supernatural all over the world - there's nothing like sharing n this discusison in person."  This program is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Putlizer Prize Willing author Eileen McNamara speaks this evening, to ask an important question: "What if the Kennedy who left the most profound legacy was not Jack or Bobby or Ted but their formidable sister, Eunice?"   That is Eileen McNamara's contention in Eunice, the Kennedy who Changed the World.  Her biography of Eunice Kennedy Shriver argues that we should remember the fifth child of Joseph and Rose Kennedy for much more than Special Olympics.  She was, in fact, the architect of one of 20th century's great civil rights movements, on behalf of people with intellectual disabilities.  A former columnist at The Boston Globe, Eileen won a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary and contributed to the newspaper's coverage of the clergy sex absue scandal in the Catholic Church, McNamara is now Director of the Journalism Program at Brandeis University.  Please join her for a fascinating talk.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

"Not all those who wander are lost..."

Those who attend this program will be treated to a modern day adventure.  Sam Ducharme set out on a 2180-mile, 14-state backpacking trip from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mt. Katahdin, Maine.   During his six-month journey he documented the rugged beauty of the Appalachian Mountains,, the wildlife, the hardships encountered on the trail, as well as the people, culture and humanity at its finest.  Come join him as he takes you through the trail towns, over the mountaintops and through the backcountry.  The images and stories will leave you with a renewed awe of the beauty of our country and its people.  See his gear, how he cooked, and hear what it is like sleeping in a hammock for six months through three seasons.   You will also hear how Sam returned to the trail the following year, connecting with aspiring Thru Hikers, paying it forward, and his return to the summit of Katahdin one year later.

Mr. Ducharme is a retired K9 Officer and is a lifelong resident of Connecticut.  He has two adult sons, both serving in the United States Air Force.  As an avid outdoorsman, and finding the empty-nest, Sam decided to buy a backpack and a plane ticket to Georgia.  From there, he started walking north.  With no prior backpacking experience, he learned on the trail.  Gear, trail nutrition, enduring the elements, and the logistics involved in a long distance backpacking trip were hard lessons.  After 20 years working within Connecticut's prisons, the search for a postiive recharge resulted in a life changing journey.   If you enjoy hiking and the outdoors, please do not miss this fascinating talk!

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Monday, November 5 from 6:30-7:30pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for November is TBA.

In order to participate, please take these simple steps:

  • Please register through the library events calendar. Only registered cooks will be able to attend.
  • Borrow a copy of the book from the library and choose a dish. Books are available at the Circulation Desk one month ahead. (If you borrow a cookbook but won't be able to attend the meeting, please return the cookbook so someone else can check it out. Thank you!)
  • Once you've chosen your recipe, contact Sara by email (struog@ocln.org) or phone (617-898-4951) to let her know what recipe you’ll be trying so we don't have a lot of duplication in the dishes we'll sample on meeting night!

Tonight there will be a free screening of the movie: "Chappaquiddick" which stars Jason Clarke, Kate Mara, Ed Helms and Bruce Dern.  Based on historical events, this suspenseful thriller examines the infamous 1960 death of Mary Jo kopechne, who drowned after Senator Ted Kennedy drove off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, and the moral and legal complexities that play out over the following week.  Not only did this event take the life of an aspiring political strategist and Kennedy insider, but it ultimately changed the course of presidential history forever.  Through true accounts, documented in the inquest from the investigation in 1969, director John Curran and writers Andrew Logan and Taylor Allen, intimately expose the broad reach of political power, the influence of America's most celebrated family, and the vulnerability of Ted Kennedy, the youngest son, in the shadow of his family legacy.  It is rated PG-13 for thematic material, disturbing images, some strong language and historical smoking and the running time is 106 minutes.  It is not suitable for young children.   This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Local painter Rob Franco has been photographing and translating the images of the beautiful horses of Assateague Island in Maryland into his lovely paintings for over 15 years.  He will give a presentation this evening about his experiences with them and with the island, to includes a 20-minute video produced through the United States Parks Department and then a discussion about the area.  Mr. Franco will also present a show and tell of objects from historical shipwrecks off the coast of Assateague, and more.  This is an art demonstration program, providing valuable information about how to create paintings from photographs, and also it is a study of the methodical process of art.  Our speaker will be showing his work also in the Library's Wotiz Gallery during the month of December 2018, so this program should serve as a good introduction to the exhibit as well.  So if you are interested in horses and/or art, please join us for a fascinating and unique topic.
