6:30 PM  -  8:30 PM Tuesday Night at the Movies: The Public
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

In this wonderful film called "The Public," an unusually bitter Arctic blast has made it's way to downtown Cincinnati and to the front doors of the public library where the action takes place.  The script was written by Emilio Estevez, who has also composed a discussion guide for it with Ryan Down, a strong homelessness advocate from Chicago.  In this story, at odds with library oficials over how to handle the extreme weather event, some homeless patrons turn the building into a shelter for the night by staging an "Occupy" sit-in.

What begins as an act of civil disobedience becomes a stand-off with police and a rush-to-judgement media constantly speculating about what's really happening.  This David versus Goliath story tackles some of our nation's most challenging issues - homelessness and mental illness - and sets the drama inside one of the last bastions of democracy-in-action:  your public library.  The movie stars Emilio Estevez, Jena Malone, Taylor Schilling, Christian Slater, Gabrielle Union, Jeffrey Wright, Michael K. Williams, Che "RHYMEFEST" Smith, Alec Baldwin, and Jacob Vargas.  It is a very inspiring tale about "doing the right thing" that everyone should see!

It's rated PG-13 for some thematic material, nudity, language and suggestive content and the running time is 2 hours.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Monday, November 18 from 6:30-7:30pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for November is The Pioneer Woman Cooks: A Year of Holidays by Ree Drummond.

In order to participate, please take these simple steps:

  • Please register through the library events calendar. Only registered cooks will be able to attend.
  • Borrow a copy of the book from the library and choose a dish. Books are available at the Circulation Desk one month ahead. (If you borrow a cookbook but won't be able to attend the meeting, please return the cookbook so someone else can check it out. Thank you!)
  • Once you've chosen your recipe, contact Sara by email (struog@ocln.org) or phone (617-898-4951) to let her know what recipe you’ll be trying so we don't have a lot of duplication in the dishes we'll sample on meeting night!

Space is limited and advance registration is required. Registration will open on Monday, October 28. Once you register you will receive more details about the club.  Bon Appetit!

Tonight there will be a free screening of the film "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" (c2018) which stars Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant.   McCarthy is masterful in this captivating account-based on a true story - of Lee Israel, a best-selling celebrity biographer in the 1970s and 1980s, and Grant plays her good friend with whom she confides.  When Lee comes to the realization that she's no longer in vogue after writing a biography of Estee Lauder which is not selling, she spins her art form into a perilous web of lies, deceit and outright crime to get back on top.  She starts forging and selling letters assumed to be written by famous authors and playwrights, and gets away with it for quite some time successfully.  This film it is based on the book by the same name, which is a title taken from a forged letter line in which she posed as Dorothy Parker.  McCarthy and Grant earned Academy Award nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor respectively for their brilliant work in this movie.  This is a fascinating study of human nature under pressure - please check it out if you have not seen it yet.   This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

Tonight we will show a unique and inspiring documentary called "The Biggest Little Farm" (2018).  The Washington Post has described this film as "breathtaking, engaging, illumiinating...a must-see."  It chronicles the eight-year quest of John and Molly Chester as they trade city living for 200 acres of barren farmland north of Los Angeles, and a dream to harvest in harmony with nature.  Through dogged perseverance and embracing the opportunity provided by nature's conflicts, the Chesters unlock and uncover a biodiverse design for living that exists far beyond their farm, it's seasons, and our wildest imagination.  Featuring breathtaking cinematography, captivating animals, and an urgent message to heed Mother Nature's call, "The Biggest Little Farm" provides us all a vital blueprint for better living and a healthier planet.  Please come and join us for an unforgettable experience!  The running time is l hour and 32 minutes, and the film is rated PG  for "mild thematic elements."  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Introduction to TaroT Card Reading with Sally Cragin
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Sally Cragin has been reading TaroT cards for years (actually decades), and when she started doing a talk at Roots Natural Foods in Leominster every Fall, she found that people were fascinated with the history of the cards, the meaning of the suits (pentacles or discs, swords, wands and cups) and the "Trump" or Major Arcana cards.  She uses the Ryder-Waite deck and talks about the Renaissance-era origins of the cards, and about art nouveau creator Pamela Colman-Smith and the iconography she used.  She has multiple decks, so this is truly a "hands-on" workshop!  This program is suitable for adults, teens and middle-schoolers.

"From the history of the cards to their meanings, Sally provided an engaging introductory lesson to TaroT.  Program participants very much enjoyed this class, and look forward to Sally's next presentation at the library." -- Kelley Rae Unger, Program Director, Peabody Public Library

Tonight there will be a talk by Milton resident Kim McLarin who wrote the book called Womanish: A Grown Black Woman Speaks on Life and Love" (c2019).  Searing in its emotional honesty, this book is an essay collection by award-winning author Kim McLarin that explores what it means to be a black woman in today's turbulent times.  Writing with candor, wit and vulnerability on topics including dating after divorce, depression, parenting older children, the Obamas, and the often fraught relations between white and black women, McLarin unveils herself at the crossroads of being black, female and middle-aged, and, ultimately, American.  Powerful and timely, this author draws upon a lifetime of experiences to paint a portrait of a black woman trying to come to terms with the world around her, and of a society trying to come to terms with black women."  (Publisher's description).  Please join us for a very interesting discussion about an important and enlightening work.  If you would like to place a hold on this title before ths program, go to www.miltonlibrary.org and click on "view catalog" from the main page, or call the Reference Dept. at (617) 698-5757, x. 3 and staff will be happy to help.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me 'Round: Stories and Songs from the Civil Rights Movement
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x.3

There will be a 60-minute presentation this evening by storyteller, musician and political satirist Charle King and his program partner, Candace Cassin.  This powerful event will include the history of the Civil Rights movement in the United States, using songs, narratives by participants at the time, and it will include hundreds of historical images.  There will be plenty of opportunity for audience members to get involved in this inspiring program!

"Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn me 'Round" offers the story of the Civil Rights Movement for African Americans from 1955 to 1967, highlighting activitists such as Rosa Parks, Fannie Lou Hamer and Ella Baker.

Charlie King is a musical storyteller who sings and writes passionately about the extraordinary lives of ordinary people.  Pete Seeger hailed him as "One of the finest singers and songwriters of our time."  Charlie has been at the heart of American folk music for over half a century and has been writing songs for the past 45 years.  In October of 2017, he received the annual Phil Ochs Award, in recognition of his music and activism for social and political justice in the spirit of Phil Ochs.

His songs have been recorded and sung by other performers such as Pete Seeger, Holly Near, Ronnie Gilbert, John McCutcheon, Arlo Guthrie, Peggy Seeger, Chad Mitchell and Judy Small.  Billboard said about him: "With encouraging regularity, Charlie King emerges from his self-reflection to remind us of the happy resilience of the human spirit.  His message songs vary between the funny and the frightening, but he pulls them off with unvarying taste, musical skill, and charm."  Please join us for a tribute to civil rights in the month of February.  This program is free and open to the public and is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Halloween Celebration: Ghosts and Legends with Jeff Belanger
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Jeff Belanger, ghost expert from PBS, will give a one-hour talk this evening called "Ghosts and Legends."  This is an early Halloween celebration for us all to enjoy and is suitable for adults, teen and older children (as the topic might be a bit scary for young kids).  Jeff will tell ghost stories about real sightings, and will share research and evidence from around the world.  For the last 19 years he has searched the world for paranormal legends that have seeped into folkore and even history books. Mr. Belanger is the author of more than a dozen books on the paranomral that have been published in six languages.  He is the Emmy-nominated host of CBS's "New England Legends," founder of the website www.Ghostvillage.com, and Travel Channel's "Ghost Adventures" writer.  He has lectured at libraries, universities, corporations, MENSA's national conference and other forums.    This talk will include images, audio clips and video, plus a question and answer session at the end for the audience.  He will also have autographed books available for purchase.

Jeff says this: "I can't wait to haunt the Milton Public Library.  We'll dim the lights, talk about the ghost experience and see the evidence and theories regarding the paranormal.  I've spoken on the topic of the supernatural all over the world - there's nothing like sharing in this discussion in person."  This program is free and open to the public, and is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.  Happy Halloween everyone!
