    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Talented photographer Barry Pell will return with a fascinating talk about his visit to Antarctica.  He will bring his colorful and educational slides for our audience to enjoy and learn more about this unique part of the planet. Antarctica is the coldest, windiest, driest place on earth.  Two-thirds of all our planet's fresh water is locked up there in the form of ice in a continent twice the size of Australia. The last continent to be understood, it is a harsh and unforgiving environment that challenged and took the lives of many early explorers.  Although an ice sheet covers 99 perecent of the land, the exposed areas along the coast nourish a wealth of tiny plants and sea creatures which in turn support the world's greatest concentrations of wildlife in the sea, on land, and in the air.  The lecturer, Barry Pell, traveled by ship to Antarcitca for two weeks in January 2017.  Based on his travels on the sea and excursions onto the land, he will discuss and show his photography of this most magnificent and unique continent.

Barry Pell is a world traveler and photojournalist.  He has traveled widely over nearly five decades, visiting and documenting landscapes and cultures in 165 countries.  Mr. Pell has also lived and traveled in China, Eastern Europe, North Africa and South America.  He currently lectures on international cultures at schools, universities and institutions in the Boston area.

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library, and is free and open to the public.

7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Author Talk by Robert Mussey Jr.: Rather Elegant Than Showy - The Classical Furniture of Isaac Vose
    Contact: Dan Haacker     dhaacker@ocln.org

The Milton Historical Society presents local author, furniture conservator and scholar Robert Mussey Jr.this evening to discuss the book he co-authored with Clark Pearce, Rather Elegant Than Showy: The Classical Furniture of Isaac Vose (Jaffrey, NH: Massachusetts Historical Society in association with David R. Godine, Publisher, c2018).  The lecture is free and open to the public and is co-sponsored by the Milton Public Library.  Although virtually forgotten for approximately 200 years, Milton Village native Isaac Vose built a substantial business empire in Boston and made furniture for the most prominent Boston families.  "Isaac Vose was well known in his day among style-conscious Bostonians, his name synonymous with furniture of the highest quality and advanced design.  His shop, the "First on Boston Neck,"was in a prominent location and served as a familiar landmark in his South End neighborhood.  Throughout the 1820s, 1830s, and as late as 1843, some nineteen years after Vose's death, auction advertisements explicityly cited his name as the make of select furniture, with the association connoting quality and calculated to increase its sale price.  This book gathers in one volume the known works of Vose as well as those attributed to him, and it is gorgeously illustrated throughout, " wrote the authors.

Robert D. Mussey Jr. founded the furniture conservation laboratory at the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities in Boston in 1982.  Now retired, he was founder and principal of Robert Mussey Associates, which provides comprehensive furniture conservation services to museums, private collectors, and historic houses.  He has published widely in museum journals on a variety of furniture conservation topics, is author of The Furniture Masterworks of John and Thomas Seymour, and is curator of a major museum exhibition.  He is now working on a study of the earliest introduction of woodworking machinery in the furniture-making trades.  Co-author Clark Pearce advises and brokers art and antiques to a group of clients with far-ranging interests.  His specialty is American furniture, and he also works with early silver, ceramics, paintings and other decorative arts from the early 18th through 19th centuries.  He has published many articles in scholarly journals with a chapter in the upcoming book,  Four Centuries of Massachusetts Furniture.

The Milton Historical Society is a non-profit organization, founded in 1904 to collect, preserve, publish and exhibit artifacts and records relating to the town of Milton.  The Suffolk Resolves House, 1370 Canton Avenue, Milton, MA, is the headquarters of the Society.  For more information, go to http://www.miltonhistoricalsociety.org.

Wotiz Gallery: Paintings by Artist Rob Franco
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

During the month of December, there will be a lovely display of paintings by artist Rob Franco installed in the Wotiz Gallery.   The exhibit will remain in place from December lst through the 28th.  This artwork will show images of many different subjects including the wild horses of Assateague Island in Maryland, landscapes from places like Martha’s Vineyard and Rockport, MA, ponds, oceans, sunrises, boats, birds, flowers, children, and much more.  Rob is a commercial artist,  a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, has worked at several local companies, and hails from Natick, MA.  He took second place in a 2014 juried show at the Art Complex Museum.  He and his wife Ruth are dedicated to the preservation of the wild horses of Assateague Island, where they visit frequently to photograph these fascinating animals for Rob to use as an inspiration for this work.  The couple gave a nice educational presentation at the Library on 11/13/18 about the horses, which included a film and some paintings and island artifacts on display as an introduction to the December exhibit, and this art talk was very well received by those who attended.  This is what Mr. Franco says about his paintings: “My passion for art began at an early age during visits to a neighborhood artist in Newport, RI.  This led to training as an illustrator in the United States Air Force and continued as a graphic artist in the Boston area.  After studying with renowned artist and teacher, Albert Handell, at drawing and pastel workshops in Woodstock, NY, the focus of my art was portraits of children and animals….a fascination with the ocean and other bodies of water continues to inspire my work.”   Please do not miss this beautiful display during December!

7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Local History Book Chat with Will: Unredeemed Captive by John Demos
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Library Director Will Adamczyk will hold his "Local History Book Chat" this evening which is free and open to the public.  The title to be read in advance is Unredeemed Captive by John Demos (Alfred Knopf, c1994). This book was nominated for the National Book Award and was winner of the Francis Parkman Prize.  The setting for this haunting and encyclopedically researched work of history is colonial Massachusetts, where English Puritans first endeavoured to "civilize" a "savage" native populace.  There, in February 1704, a French and Indian war party descended on the village of Deerfield, abducting a Puritan minister and his children.  Although John Williams was eventually released, his daughter horrified the family by staying with her captors and marrying a Mohawk husband.

Out of this incident, The Bancroft- Prize-winning historian John Devos has constructed a gripping narrative that opens a window into North America where English, French, and Native Americans faced one another across gulfs of culture and belief, and sometimes crossed over.  John Demos is the Samuel Knight Professor Emeritus of History at Yale University.  He lives in Tyringham, MA and has won several prizes for his writing, including for his work called Entertaining Satan.

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.  Please join us for a fascinating discussion about a very interesting book.

7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM School the World Info Session
    Contact: Natalie Hambor   2034643167   natalie.hambor@schooltheworld.org

School the World is a Boston-based international nonprofit founded on the belief that empowerment begins with education. We envision a world where every child has a meaningful opportunity to learn. Our mission is to lift children out of extreme poverty with the power of education. We start with school buildings. To create lasting and sustainable change, we also train teachers, deeply engage the parents and local community, stock libraries, and build life skills and values through play.

A pillar of our strategy includes empowering local students to become global citizens through our Service Learning Program. We call them World Changers because of their passion for service and desire to drive change. Students commit to raising funds to build a school and/or playground in a Guatemalan village. Students visit the community to participate in the actual construction process and complete in time to join the dedication ceremony during their spring or summer break.

This informational meeting is open to parents and students who are interested in learning about School the World and how to participate in this life-changing service experience.

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Monday, January 28 from 6:30-7:30pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for January is TBA.

In order to participate, please take these simple steps:

  • Please register through the library events calendar. Only registered cooks will be able to attend.
  • Borrow a copy of the book from the library and choose a dish. Books are available at the Circulation Desk one month ahead. (If you borrow a cookbook but won't be able to attend the meeting, please return the cookbook so someone else can check it out. Thank you!)
  • Once you've chosen your recipe, contact Sara by email (struog@ocln.org) or phone (617-898-4951) to let her know what recipe you’ll be trying so we don't have a lot of duplication in the dishes we'll sample on meeting night!

Space is limited and advance registration is required. Registration will open on Monday, January 7. Once you register you will receive more details about the club.  Bon Appetit!

Stuffed animals are invited to the library on February 20 for a special sleepover party JUST FOR THEM!

Each child may bring a stuffed animal to the library on Tuesday afternoon between 2:30 and 4:30 pm.  After your pal checks in with Miss Sara, they will spend a fun-filled night in the library!  We promise to feed your stuffed animal a nutritious dinner, read him or her lots of stories, and tuck them in for bed before midnight!  You can come back and pick them up on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 pm, when you can learn about all of the adventures that Miss Sara and the stuffed animals had together.

Note to parents: please send an animal that can spend the whole night - perhaps not the favorite lovey that cannot be parted with...

For ages 4 and up.  Registration is required, and will open two weeks in advance.

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Monday, March 25 from 6:30-7:30pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for March is TBA.

Registration will open on Monday, March 4. Once you register you will receive more details about the club.  Bon Appetit!
