Virtual Exhibit: Painter David Dauer and Floral Arrangements
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 898-4964   jhlady@ocln.org

Milton Painter David Dauer will show a virtual exhibit of his work at our website this month.   "Floral Arrangements," new work by artist David Dauer represents a transition over the past two years from his surrealistic stories to a new world of nature and life, using flowers as the vehicle to tell his stories.  In his new work, he develops abstract structures with rich textures to create a vibrant underpainting.  With that done, he draws his imagery and then paints using color washes and thick paint to create color.  He says: "Flowers, and in some cases landscapes, are the vehicle to convey my visual conversations.  Flowers represent more than what we see in the natural world.  They represent all life and the interactions we experience around us."

David holds both a BFA (UMass,Dartmouth) and an MFA (Kent State U) with continued studies in design from UMass Dartmouth.  He has participated in group and solo shows.  For over 30 years, he worked in the Publishing and Advertising fields as a designer, art director and creative director.  Born in Brooklyn, NY, he grew up in Framingham, MA.  For 35 years he lived in Milton, MA until recently settling in Canton, MA with his wife Debbie.  You can see the exhibit starting 10/1 at:  https://miltonlibrary.libguides.com/art

David's website is: http://dbauerstudiostore.com

This is what Lauren says about her beautiful photos: "I have been fortunate to visit many places in the world with my camera in tow.  For this exhibit, I have chosen a handful of my favorite photos from some of my travels, including Ireland, Puerto Rico, Mexico and various locations across the U.S.  I aim to create images that convey my own unique perspective on a given subject or situation.  Many of my favorite images have come from the least expected moments....Thank you for taking the time to look at my work.  I hope you enjoy it!  Stay well."

The photographer's website is: LaurenLombard.com and after 11/1 you can view the exhibit here: https://miltonlibrary.libguides.com/art

7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Fashion Talk: The Golden Age of Hollywood
    Contact: Jean Hlady     jhlady@ocln.org

Fashion expert Karen Antonowicz will give a virtual presentation this evening called "The Golden Age of Hollywood."   Fashion on the silver screen during the 30's, 40's, and 50's was not only glamorous and influential, but also was enjoyed as an "escape" from the problems of each decade.  In the Depression era, folks could attend the movies as a way to forget their current circumstances, while the films served as both escapism and news reporting during the long years of World War II.  Finally, the 1950's movies continued to show elegant fashions that were inspiring to the audiences of that period, but the advent of television caused fashion influences to be split between the silver screen and the smaller TV in America's homes.  Join us as we travel through these fascinating decades and enjoy a glimpse into the glamour of that golden age.

This program is kindly supported by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.  Advance registration is required here; once signed up, a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the program.

7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Local History Book Group: Black Bostonians by James Horton
    Contact: Will Adamczyk     miref@ocln.org

Library Director Will Adamczyk will hold his virtual Local History Book Group this evening via Zoom.  The book to be read in advance is Black Bostonians: Family Life and Community Struggle in the Antebellum North by James Horton (c1999).

This work creates a profile of Black Bostonians by examining lifestyles, family structure, culture, community, religion, and marriage patterns.   The title was first published in 1979 and then revised in 1999.  It brings to light many individual African Americans who lived and worked in Boston, including in the North End and Beacon Hill communities.  It is an important contribution to Boston history and we encourage you to participate in a lively discussion about it with Will online.

Advance registration is required at our website; a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the program.  To reserve a copy of the book, please call the Reference Dept. at (617) 898-4964 or go to our website library catalog at www.miltonlibrary.org

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

    Contact: Jean Hlady     jhlady@ocln.org

This enjoyable program will be a virtual holiday concert with the talented vocalist Les Sampou and her pianist, Ed Grenga, otherwise know as"The Dirty Martinis."  Ms. Sampou has seven Rounder Records albums to her credit as she is an accomplished bluesy songwriter and recording artist from the Boston area.  The new jazz combo called "The Dirty Martinis" that she created with Ed Grenga is not to miss!  If you've seen and heard Les before, you know you're in for a treat no matter what style she sings.

Les Sampou has a four-octave range, and she will bring you unique and sultry interpretations of some of history's most beloved jazz tunes this evening.  And ace Pianist Ed Grenga brilliantly arranges classics made famous by Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Peggy Lee, George Gershwin and Harold Arlen.  Ed has worked as a songwriter, producer, and arranger for over 30 years. He has also scored over a dozen feature films, documentaries and TV shows.

This concert will be dedicated to The Great American Songbook and will also include some songs to inspire us for this most unusual holiday season, due to COVID.  You can just sit back and enjoy a virtual concert of inspiring and soothing tunes this year safely at home - our gift to you from the library.  Please join us!

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.

Advance registration is required; a connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the event.  It will be streamed to our Facebook page so it's easy to just click on the link you will receive once signed up.  Please note that you do NOT need to have your own Facebook page to view this program.
