Wotiz Gallery Exhibit: Paintings by Artist Paul Riley
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

In the Wotiz Gallery this month there will be an exhibit called "Journey from Drafting Board to Easel" by Milton artist Paul Riley.  The display will show the watercolors, pastels and acrylics of the artist, who is retired from a career as a mechanical designer and a teacher of drafting and design.  During his career he recognized the future in his field was computer-aided design and he eagerly embraced programs to apply technology to all drawing projects.  As an educator he inspired many students to use technology to explore their creativity.  He started taking drawing classes, moved from line drawing to more expressive free form and began by using pastels and acrylics.  His mechanical design-influenced works include "The Brush," "Tools of the Trade" and "Waterworks."  His appreciation for architectural form, angles and lighting is seen in paintings such as the "Baker Chocolate Building."  Later Paul began the study of watercolor techniques and his recent pieces reflect his appreciation for nature, notably "The Nest" and "Sunflower."  Currently he continues to take art classes and is a member of the Milton Art Association.  Still growing as a painter, Paul embraces experimentation with subject, technique and medium.   There will be a free and open reception for this exhibit on Wednesday, May 9th from 6-8 PM in the Gallery.  Please come meet the artist and view his lovely work.

Wotiz Gallery Exhibit: Travel Sketches - Paris and Venice by J.B. Clancy
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

During June 2018, the Milton Public Library is hosting a very talented artist in the Wotiz Gallery.  Milton resident J.B. Clancy will present an exhibit called “Travel Sketches – Paris and Venice”  from June 2nd through the 30th.   All the drawings in this show were done on location with a simple ink pen and sketch book, generally while sitting in a comfortable café.  The subject may be a famous building or a barge on a canal.  Yet the time spent looking is as important as the subject.  J.B. believes drawing while traveling is the best way to observe the world around you.  Spending time in one place and recording what you see impresses the sights and sounds of that place firmly into your memory.

J.B. studied architecture at a time when hand-drawing was still part of the education of an architect.  While most of the work today is on a computer, J.B. still uses sketches and the drawing process to explore design ideas and in his work with clients.  He is a partner with Albert, Righter & Tittmann (or ART) Architects in Boston.  ART Architects practices the art and science of architecture throughout the northeast, designing houses in New England traditions with a focus on sustainability.  J.B. is a Certified Passive House Consultant and designed Vermont’s first Certified Passive House.  He is a graduate of Brown University and the Yale School of Architecture.  He lives in Milton with his artist wife Dana and their son Barron.

There will be a free and open reception for this exhibit on Tuesday, June 5th, from 6-8 PM in the Gallery, so please come meet the artist and view his lovely work.

This evening local author Tara Cousineau, Ph.D, will give a one-hour talk about her new book called The Kindness Cure: How the Science of Compassion Can Heal Your Heart & Your World (New Harbinger Publications, 2018).  "It's time for a kindness revolution!"  These days kindness seems to have a bad rap!  We've become suspicious of it.  On the one hand, being kind seems too soft and easy; on the other, we don't quite trust it.  Yet we lament that we don't see more of it.  It's easy to look around and see noting but cynicism or feel overwelmed by the word.  Dr. Cousineau contends that kindness is neither a sweet platitude nor something to check off in the Do-Gooder category.  Kindness takes effort - and it's worth it.  Kindness deeply affects our health and well-being.  Her book is a blend of story and science that is sure to change how you think about kindness.  Tara is a clinical psychologist, meditation teacher, well-being researcher, and social entrepreneur.  She is affiliated wih the Center for Mindfulness and Compassion at Cambridge Health Alliance in Somerville, MA and resides in Milton.  Please join us for an inspirational evening with a prolific writer.

Tonight we are offering a free film screening of what one reviewer called "One of the best films of the year!" "The Glass Castle" tells an inspiring true story about Jeannette (Oscar winner Brie Larson) who had a poor but wildly adventurous childhood, raised by her free-spirited father (Woody Harrleson) and her mother (Naomi Watts), an eccentric artist.  This all-star cast shines in the movie based on The New York Times best-selling memoir.  When Jeannette's father's behavior becomes erratic, she and her siblings must find the courage to live on their own terms in this uplifting story of unconditional love.  It is rated PG-13 for "mature thematic content, involving family dysfunction, for some language and smoking" and the running time is 127 minutes.  This program is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Monday, June 25 from 6:30-7:30pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for June is Carla's Comfort Foods by Carla Hall.

In order to participate, please take these simple steps:

  • Please register through the library events calendar. Only registered cooks will be able to attend.
  • Borrow a copy of the book from the library and choose a dish. Books are available at the Circulation Desk one month ahead. (If you borrow a cookbook but won't be able to attend the meeting, please return the cookbook so someone else can check it out. Thank you!)
  • Once you've chosen your recipe, contact Sara by email (struog@ocln.org) or phone (617-898-4951) to let her know what recipe you’ll be trying so we don't have a lot of duplication in the dishes we'll sample on meeting night!

There will be a hour-long book discussion this evening with Library Director Will Adamczyk to explore the title: American War by Omar El Akkad (c2017).  Each quarter we'll read a work of contemporary fiction that we might not otherwise have chosen for ourselves -- possibly controversial, possibly newsworthy -- but definitely discussion worthy!  This is an audacious and powerful debut novel: a second American Civil War, a devastating plague, and one family caught deep in the middle -- a story that asks what might happen if America were to turn its most devastating policies and deadly weapons upon itself.  Sarat Chestnut, born in Louisiana, is only 6 years old when the Second American Civil War breaks out in 2074.  But even she knows that oil is outlawed, that Louisiana is half underwater, and that unmanned drones fill the sky.  And when her father is killed and her family is forced into camp Patience for displaced persons, she quickly begins to be shaped by her particular time and place until, finally, through the influence of a mysterious functionary, she is turned into a deadly instrument of war.  Telling her story is her nephew, Benjamin Chestnut, born during war -- part of the Miraculous Generation -- now an old man confronting the dark secret of his past, his family's role in the conflict and, in particular, that of his aunt, a woman who saved his life while destroying untold others.    You may reserve a copy of the book either by going to our website which is www.miltonlibrary.org or by calling the Reference Department at (617) 698-5757, x. 3 for staff help to place a reserve.  Please join Will for a fascinating discussion!   This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

    Contact: Children's Room   617-698-5757   struog@ocln.org

Readers' Theatre is a a type of drama performed by "readers" who read from a script and do not have to memorize lines.  Performed with minimal costumes, sets and props, readers' theatre can be not only a great introduction to theatre for kids, but it's also a great way to practice one's oral reading skills, build confidence, and have fun with friends at the same time!

This summer, Miss Sara is leading a Readers' Theatre Club for students entering grades 2-4.  Each week participants will play theatre games, tackle different scripts based on well-known children's books, and make crafts to supplement the stories we're telling together.  The Club will meet five times over the course of the summer, and each meeting will culminate with a performance for family and friends.  While this is a drop-off program, parents/caregivers are asked to return 15 minutes before the end of each class (at 3:45) so they can see the show!

Students must be fluent readers who have completed first grade.  Registration is required and will open two weeks before the event.

Celebrate Libraries Rock with us during this fun and educational program all about the science of sound!

Music and all sorts of merry sounds engage students in sound experiments and live demonstrations showing the properties and transmission of sound waves. Students listen to sounds made with solid materials—from plastic, to metal, to string. Ordinary objects like handheld horns, metal screws, wooden ratchets and beads transform into a story sound-effect symphony. Electronic devices reveal frequency when a pitch-changing machine alters the students’ voices to gruff monsters or happy chipmunks. (K to 6)

Thousands of restaurants have come and gone on Cape Cod over the past century. Some, however, made an indelible mark. Bill and Thelma's was hugely popular with students from the 1950s to the 1970s, often packed with locals after sporting events and dances. Starbuck's Restaurant in Hyannis featured the Chief Justice Warren Burger Burger and the Larry Bird Burger on its menu and boasted of the soup du jour, "We don't know what it is, but we have it every day." Opinions differ on how the Reno Diner actually got its name, whether from a broken sign or a local appliance company.

In his book, Historic Restaurants of Cape Cod, Author Christopher Setterlund details the history of the iconic establishments of the Cape, still fresh in the memories of patrons, complete with famous recipes.

Tonight there will be a free screening of the film "Paris Can Wait" directed by Eleanor Coppola and starring Diane Lane, Arnaud Viard and Alec Baldwin.    Anne is at a crossroads in her life.  Long married to a successful, driven, but inattentive movie producer, she unexpectedly finds herself taking a road trip from Cannes to Paris with a business associate of her husband.  What should be a seven-hour drive turns into a two-day adventure complete with picturesque sights, fine food and wine, humor, wisdom and romance, reawakening Anne's senses and giving her a new lust for life.  This is a great story and it is rated PG for "thematic elements, smoking and some language."  The running time is 92 minutes.  Come enjoy the cool library during July and check out this program, which is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Discovering how to make objects disappear and reappear using optical illusions, polymers, mirrors, as well as hidden compartments, sleight-of-hand, and misdirection are part of the learning experience. The art of escape with Houdini’s chains and the power of perception with the crayon mind-reading trick are a few classics. The (K to 6)  This workshop has an additional equipment fee.

For ages 6-11; registration is required and will open two weeks prior to the event. Sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Tonight there will be a free screening of the excellent film "Marshall" which is a 2017 American biographical legal drama and stars Chadwick Boseman as Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice.  It focuses on one of the first cases of his career called "The State of Connecticut v. Joseph Spell."  In this true story, in 1940 Thurgood Marshall is an NAACP lawyer traveling the country defending people of color who are wrongly accused of crimes because of racial prejudice.  Upon the return to his New York office, he is sent to Bridgeport, CT to defend Joseph Spell (played by Sterling K. Brown), a chauffeur accused of rape by his white employer, Eleanor Strubing, in a case that has gripped the newspapers.  A Jewish insurance lawyer, Sam Friedman (Josh Gad) is assigned by his brother, against his will, to get Marshall admitted to the local bar.  At the hearing, the judge agrees to admit Marshall but forbids him to speak during the trial, forcing Friedman to be Spell's lead counsel.  This is an entertaining and inspiring biopic of a very human hero.   Please join us for this program, which is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.  The movie is 1 hour, 58 minutes in length and is rated PG-13 for "mature thematic content, sexuality, violence and some strong language."
