Wotiz Gallery Exhibit by the South Shore Camera Club
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

The South Shore Camera Club will be displaying their "Best Of" Show during the months of November and December in the Wotiz Gallery.  The photographs exemplify the high caliber of work created by the club's 200 members.  The images run the gamut from Judy Bergman Hochberg's delicate artistic rendering of a desert plant ("Yucca") to June Kaps' dramatic classic New England coastal storm ("Squall's Comin") to Michael Cushing's touching street portrait of two Cuban gentlemen ("Cienfuegos, Cuba 2017").  Their work has been exhibited throughout New England at venues such as the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, J Jake Art Gallery in Boston's South End, Plymouth Center for the Arts, Quincy Arts Fest, South Shore Art Center, Milton Art Center, New England Camera Club Council, and other libraries, hospitals and galleries.  These photographers have received awards in recognition of their technical and artistic mastery.  There will be a free and open reception and awards ceremony on Thursday, November 16th from 6-8 PM in the Wotiz.  Acclaimed commercial and fine arts photographer Scott Nobles of Milton is serving as judge, and will select recipients of "Best of Show" and other awards.  Reception attendees may vote for their favorite photo to receive the "People's Choice" award.  For more information go to www.south-shorecamercaclub.com.  Please come and enjoy this lovely display at the library.

Wotiz Gallery Display: Handmade Rugs and Wall Hangings by Artist Debbie Elliot
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

There will be a display in the Wotiz Gallery this month of both framed woven works and wall rugs.  The wall rugs are created in the style of a traditional Norwegian weaving structure called Krokbragd (pron. kroke-brahg).  The artist, Debbie Elliot, explores the intersection of pattern and color in this lovely exhibit.  This is not a complicated weave, but it is a slow process requiring three passes of the shuttle to create one pattern row.  Krokbragd uses only three shafts or harnesses on the loom and the pattern shapes are both simple and modern.  Each piece is made with natural fibers of cotton in the warp and wool for the weft.  Debbie has woven the small framed works from original patterns by Bertha Gray Hayes who designed 72 overshot weaving patterns in Rhode Island between 1933 and 1947.  She invites the viewer to look closely at the miniature designs in a weave structure called Overshot, which was also a traditional favorite weaving structure of early Colonial days.  This work is woven with cotton in the warp and both cotton and wool in the weft.  This collection of work has all been created on a four-harness floor loom.

The artist considers weaving an expression of both function and beauty.  Although deeply rooted in tradition, weaving is also modern and contemporary.  It is a slow process and the limitless potential of color, pattern and texture of the basic over-under structure provides a continued link to the future.  By making something to last in our fast-moving culture, she feels that she can contribute to the great legacy of weavers from the past.  In this exhibit, she introduces two traditional but very different weave structures that she hopes viewers will see, enjoy and then come away with a fresh idea of a very old artform.  Debbie Elliot is a Milton-based artist and a former teacher.  She has exhibited her handweaving and her ceramic work in both California and Massachusetts.  Her pottery has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, and her handwoven pieces are on permanent display at the Massachusetts Statehouse.  To contact her, Email: elliotdeb@gmail.com

    Contact: laura Sauter   6177806485   removingthering@gmail.com

So do you know what a vision board is?

It's a way to manifest your dream life. When you make a vision board, you get clear on what you want to create in your life.

Once you get clarity, you select words and imagry from magazines and paste them onto a big poster board. Seeing this board each day aligns your brain with the outcomes you most want to attract. (Oprah, Ellen Degeneres and Katy Perry all swear by vision boards!)

It sounds pretty simple. (and yes there is a process ot make your vision boards more powerful)

So why doesn't everyone create vision boards? Well, as my experience as a mom and an entrepreneur, most of us never make the time. We let our busy, distracted lives keep us, well, busy and distracted!)

It's time to change that! On January 6, I am hosting the first ever TOTAL DIVORCE MAKEOVER VISION BOARD WORKSHOP. It's a half day immersion for you to focus on your authentic life, core clarity, and ideal outcomes for the new future you are designing.

2:00 PM  -  4:00 PM Shakespeare Sundays - Romeo and Juliet
    Contact: Connie Spiros     cdspiros@comcast.net

David Smith returns to the Milton Public Library with his very popular "Shakespeare Sundays."  One of the things that make Shakespeare great is his openness to multiple interpretations, and the often very different cinematic versions of the same play bring his elasticity vividly home to us.  In a series of two sessions this winter, participants will begin with conversation about the issues raised in the chosen play and will then view excerpts from the films.  Further discussion will focus on how the directors have brought their special vision to the material.  Participants should read each play in advance and to order a copy, you can search the online catalog here on the website (www.miltonlibrary.org) or call the Library's Reference Department at (617) 698-5757, x. 3 for a reserve.

The plays are: "Romeo and Juliet" on January 21st and "The Merchant of Venice" on February 27th.

Please sign up here to attend this fun and educational program.

Discussion leader: David Smith was a secondary school English teacher for 50 years, the last 34 of which were at Milton Academy, where he taught courses in English and American Literature, Shakespeare, Literary Performance, and Non-Fiction Writing.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Come and hear an interesting one-hour weather program with film clips, given by Will Broussard, the Education Coordinator for the Mount Washington Observatory in North Conway, NH.  An infamous place of extremes, 6,288-foot Mount Washington, New Hampshire has been captivating audiences for hundreds of years.  While many places on Earth experience weather, few are inhabited by humans 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  Mount Washington Observatory has been operating a continously-staffed scientific outpost on this remote peak since 1932, providing the Observatory many remarkable stories and an intimate knowledge of the mountain.  Through the years, the hardy men and women of the Observatory have experienced white-out blizzards, stunning 110-mile vistas, and everything in between.  They have survived a 231 mph wind gust, endless days of disorienting fog, and snow drifts more than 20 feet tall. They have worked with scientists and celebrities, students and snow rangers.  They have amassed one of North America's longest continuous climate records, and developed an intimate understanding of the place known as the "Home of the World's Worst Weather."  Join us to learn more at this fascinating program at the library.  The event is free and open to the public and is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

There will be a free screening this evening of the inspiring film, "The Zookeeper's Wife" starring Jessica Chastain.  This true story tells the tale of Antonina Zabinska who - in 1939 Poland - successfully ran the Warsaw Zoo with her husband.  They raised their family in an idyllic existence until their world is overturned when the country is invaded by the Nazis, and they are forced to report to the Reich's newly appointed zoologist, played by Daniel Bruhl.  To fight back on their own terms, the Zabinskis risk everything by covertly working with the Resistance and using the zoo's hidden tunnels and cages to save families from Nazi brutality. This is an intriguing and inspirational tale of heroism that all should see.  The rating is PG-13 for "thematic elements, disturbing images, violence, brief sexuality, nudity and smoking" so is not suitable for children.  The running time is 2 hours and 6 minutes.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Participants should read each play in advance and to order a copy of the play, you can search the online catalog here on the website (www.miltonlibrary.org) or call the Library's Reference Department at (617) 698-5757, x.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Wildlife photographer Peter Christoph returns to the Library with a talk called "Birds of the Quabbin" this evening in a one-hour presentation.  Treat yourself to an unforgettable narrated slideshow as Mr. Christoph shares his experiences looking for wildlife, by land and by boat, at the beautiful and pristine Quabbin Reservoir.  A rich diversity of birds call the Quabbin their home, the main attraction being the common loon and bald eagle families that nest here.  Several winters ago, Peter built a rustic cabin along a river in an area known as the North Quabbin Woods.  It was from this base camp that he discovered the "Magic of the Quabbin" and became intimately familiar with its intricate network of channels, coves and islands.  You'll also learn about the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir, including a glimpse into the lost towns which gave way to this unlikely wilderness area.  Please join us for a fascinating hour learning more about Massachusetts nature and wildlife.

Join Library Director, Will Adamczyk, as he moderates his Eclectic Book Club.  Each quarter we'll read and discuss a work of contemporary fiction, with a focus on titles that we might not necessarily have chosen ourselves....possibly controversial, possibly newsworthy, but definitely discussion worthy!  The book to be read in advance is The Attack by Yasmina Khadra (c2004).

From the bestselling author of The Swallows of Kabul comes this timely and haunting novel that powerfully illuminates the devastating human costs of terrorism.Dr. Amin Jaafari is an Arab-Israeli surgeon at a hospital in Tel Aviv. As an admired and respected member of his community, he has carved a space for himself and his wife, Sihem, at the crossroads of two troubled societies. Jaafari’s world is abruptly shattered when Sihem is killed in a suicide bombing. As evidence mounts that Sihem could have been responsible for the catastrophic bombing, Jaafari begins a tortured search for answers. Faced with the ultimate betrayal, he must find a way to reconcile his cherished memories of his wife with the growing realization that she may have had another life, one that was entirely removed from the comfortable, modern existence that they shared.

Tonight we will show a very enjoyable romantic comedy called "Paris Can Wait" directed by Eleanor Coppola (2017).  It stars Diane Lane, Alec Baldwin and Arnaud Viard.  This is the story: Anne is at a crossroads in her life. She is married to a successful but inattentive movie producer named Michael, and is starved for attention as an underappreciated empty-nester wife.  He treats her more like a personal assistant, relying on her to keep track of his socks, pills and inseam length, rather than making her own happiness a priority.  Here, an earache keeps her grounded, but Michael's colleague Jacques generously offers to be her chauffeur to Paris.  So she unexpectedly finds herself taking a car trip from Cannes to Paris with him, but the first matter of business isn't beating the traffic but enjoying a lunch of proscuitto and ripe melon with abundant glasses of vino.  Her eyes also widen when he asks for her credit card, so he can make a hotel reservation for the night.   So what should be a seven-hour drive turns into a carefree two-day adventure replete with diversions involving picturesque sights, fine food and wine, humor, wisdom and romance, reawakening Anne's senses and giving her a new lust for life.  The movie is 92 minute long and is rated PG for "thematic elements, smoking and some language."  Lots of fun!  Please come.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.
