Wotiz Gallery Exhibit by Photographer Donna Parker
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

The Milton Public Library will host Milton photographer Donna Parker from April 1-30, 2019 in the Wotiz Gallery and her exhibit is called “Coastal New England.”  Her display will be mixed, to include landscapes, black and white images, and other creative photos on various subjects.  Ms. Parker has displayed previously at the Cumberland, RI public library, at Fuller Village in Milton, has been in juried competitions at MMAS Art Gallery of Massachusetts, and at several other locations.  She has also attended numerous workshops and art classes at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence.

This is what she says about her work: “I have been involved in photography for over 25 years.  I enjoy all types of photography and particularly enjoy the beauty of photographing flowers and landscapes. I also enjoy the imagery provided by black and white photography that provides a strong visual impact, simplicity, and elegance.  As a health care researcher, photography has provided me with a wonderful opportunity to express my vision of a moment in time, a particular place or object, and people I have met.  Textures, patterns and shadows are all used to help me convey the images.  I reside in MA and extensively photograph in New England and the East Coast.  I particularly enjoy photographing the tranquil and beautiful coast of New England.  I am a member of several photography clubs, an associate member of the Arts League of Rhode Island, and have had my images exhibited in a number of art galleries.”  Please come and check out this lovely display at the Library coming up.

For more information about this exhibit or to learn more about applying for a gallery display, contact Jean Hlady, Head of Adult Services/Reference at (617) 698-5757, x. 3.

Learn about nature, make a clay sculpture, and have fun at the library!  In our second program, participants will observe many different types of real bird’s nests from out nest collection. This will allow them to feel and learn about the natural materials that birds use to make nests. After listening to a story about a mother robin caring for her nest and observing the real nests, each child-caregiver pair will then make their own nest out of natural material. The nest will be self-contained in a paper bowl. Once the nest is made, each child will use air dried clay to sculpt several eggs and one parent bird to place in their nest. Each group will get to keep their nest and once the clay dries, they will be able to paint the eggs and birds.

This nature and art program is brought you by the Mass Audubon's Museum of American Bird Art and is funded by the Milton Cultural Council.

Wotiz Gallery Exhibit by Artist Thato Mwosa
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Talented Milton artist Thato Mwosa will be displaying her work this month in the Wotiz Gallery. Ms. Mwosa is a multifaceted artist who is the owner of Tuli Art, a business that specializes in ballerina illustrations.  When she started decorating her daughter Tuli's room, Thato wanted a ballerina-themed decor.  After finding that black/brown ballerina art was scarce, Thato decided to make illustrations inspired by her daughter.  The result is a truly remarkable array of ballerinas in different poses wearing bold and vibrant costumes.  These ballerina silhouettes represent girls of any color.  This is what she says about her work: "I believe in personalizing the ballerina illustrations as much as I can.  My customers give me the name of their daughters/granddaughters/nieces, etc...and their favorite colors.  After that the magic happens.  Sometimes I even add a little bedazzling on the illustrations!"  she says.  So far Thato has illustrations of over 50 ballerinas including ones named in homor of Misty Copeland, Ingrid Silva and Michaela DePrince.  Ballerinas are not the only illustrations that Thato enjoys.  She also created the Afrik Art series, which features women wearing bold and vibrant Afro centric fabric.  And her animal series is specifically created for kids or nursery room decor.  The illustrations are often in bold, constrasting colors, which create a compelling palette.  Thato has now introduced new products including tote bags, ballerina t-shirts and postcards to her Tuli Art line as well.

This artist is also an award-winning filmmaker and a TV/Film Instructor in Boston.  She is currently working on her MFA in Stage and Screen Writing at Lesley University.  She is a wife and a mother of three precious kids: two boys and one girl.  To reach Thato, you may Email her at tuliartshop@gmail.com or go to her website which is: www.tuliart.com.

There will be a closing reception in the gallery on Thursday, May 30th, from 6-8 PM.  Please stop by on May 30th, meet the artist, and view her lovely work.

Library Director Will Adamczyk will hold his "Local History Book Group" this evening.  The book to be read in advance is The Gardner Heist: The True Story of the World's Largest Unsolved Art Theft (c2008) by Ulrich Boser.  On March 18, 1990, two men dressed as policemen broke into Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and walked out with a dozen masterpieces worth $500 million.  To date, not one painting has been recovered.  Before he died, Harold Smith, one of the world's greatest art detectives, believed he was close to cracking the case.  After Smith's family gave journalist Ulrich Boser access to his research, Boser explored Smith's unfinished leads.  You can find a copy of the title on the first floor of the Library at the Borrower Services Desk reserve shelf - just stop by and ask to check out a copy.  This is a fascinating story and we encourage you to join Will for a fun discussion of it.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM World War II Talk: So Close to Home by Alison O'Leary
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Author Alison O'Leary will give a presentation tonight about the true story of men and women pitted against the sea during Word War II.  Her new book, co-authored by Michael Tougias,  is called So Close to Home and this talk will present the story with dramatic images in a multimedia event for all ages.  A book signing will follow.  On May 19, 1942, a U-boat in the Gulf of Mexico stalked its prey fifty miles from new Orleans.  Captained by 29-year-old Erich Wurdemann, the submarine set its sights on the freighter Heredia with 62 souls on board.,  Most were merchant seamen, but there were also a handful of civilians, including the children, eight-year-old Sonny and eleven-year-old Lucille.  Fast asleep in their berths, the Downs family had no idea that two torpedoes were heading their way.  Quoting from Commander Wurdemann's War Diary, the story adds balance and perspective to war narratives by chronicling the daring mimssion of the U-boat and its commaner's decision-making in the Gulf of Mexico.  Author Alison O'Leary is a journalist and former Boston Globe correspondent and magazine editor.  Other books she has co-written wtih NY Times best selling author Michael Tougias (The Finest Hours) include Inns & Adventures: A History and Explorer's Guide to New Hampshire, Vermont and the Berkshires and the Appalachian Mountain Club's latest Best Day Hikes Near Boston.    This program Is free and open to the public and is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library  Please join us this evening for a fascinating program!

In order to participate, please take these simple steps:

  • Please register through the library events calendar. Only registered cooks will be able to attend.
  • Borrow a copy of the book from the library and choose a dish. Books are available at the Circulation Desk one month ahead. (If you borrow a cookbook but won't be able to attend the meeting, please return the cookbook so someone else can check it out. Thank you!)
  • Once you've chosen your recipe, contact Sara by email (struog@ocln.org) or phone (617-898-4951) to let her know what recipe you’ll be trying so we don't have a lot of duplication in the dishes we'll sample on meeting night!

Tonight there will be a free screening of a completely all-consuming movie called "Adrift"  ( 2018) which stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin.  It is based on the inspiring true story of two free spirits whose chance encounter leads them first to love, and then to the adventure of a lifetime.  As the two sailors set out on a journey across the ocean, Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp couldn't anticipate they would be sailing directly into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history.  In the aftermath of the storm, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins.  With no hope for rescue, Tami must find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved.  "Adrift" is the unforgettable story about the resilience of the human spirit and the transcendent power of love.  This is "A white-knuckle survival tale!" according to Entertainment Weekly.  Please join us for a riveting story!   The film's length is one hour and 40 minutes, and it is rated PG-13 for "injury images, peril, language, brief drug use, partial nudity, and thematic elements."  Therefore it is not appropriate for young children.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Author Talk about Nicaragua by Cully Lundgren
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

This evening there will be a presentation by Milton author Cully Lundgren about the book he wrote called Mom, There's A Scorpion in my Pants (c2018).  Taking risks can be really scary.  Yet risk-taking can also result in rich, transformative experiences and memories that last a lifetime.  In 2016, Cully and Miriam Lundgren and their two sons, Harlan and Olle, picked up from their comfortable life in Massachusetts and landed in a small village in rural Nicaragua.  They didn't speak Spanish or know any of their neighbors, and were not accustomed to going without water or electricity for long stretches of time.  Over the course of almost the next year, they learned - usually the hard way - how to do laundry by hand, to co-exist with spiders, wild dogs, and scorpions, to ride out earthquakes and floods with a smile, and to communicate (sometimes unintelligibly) in another language.  They also learned the benefits that a slower pace of life and unhooking from technology can bring.  Most importantly, during a time of great polarization of people due to ideological and political differences in the US, they came to experience a deeper meaing of community, one in which their neighbors became their family, and the people they met on the bus, their friends.  They learned how good they really have it living in the United States, and that they possess the resources and responsibility to help others by giving back, sacrificng some of their comforts along the way.  Join the Lundgrens in their year-long quest to understand themselves and others in a new, deeper way.  And if you're game after finishing this book, consider a risk you can take, knowing that it could lead you into unexpected, unforgettable directions.

Cully Lundgren never fancied himself as an author prior to writing this book. He had committed to penning updates about his family's expeiences in Nicaragua, but figured that would be the end of it.  Yet as he wrote, he felt the updates turning into stories with deep meaning, revealing not only the adventures they experienced but the lives of the people around them.  Since September of 2017, he has been working with Oxfam America, raising funds fto fight poverty and inequality, adressing many of the challenges that the Lundgren family witnessed in El Tololar.  Please join us for this inspiring talk!

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and your host will be staff member Sally Lawler.

Library Director Will Adamczyk will hold his "Eclectic Book Group" this evening.  The book to be read in advance is Marauders by Tom Cooper (c2015).  This work of fiction is set in a small bayou town devastated by the BP oil spill, and it is a darkly hilarious debut novel from the author. When the BP oil spill devastates the Gulf coast, those who made a living by shrimping find themselves in dire straits.  For the oddballs and lowlifes who inhabit the sleepy, working-class bayou town of Jeanette, these desperate circumstances serve as the catalyst that pushes them to enact whatever risky schemes they can dream up to reverse their fortunes.  At the center of it all is Gus Lindquist, a pill-addicted, one-armed treasure hunter obsessed with finding the lost treasure of pirate Jean Lafitte.  His quest brings him into contact with a wide array of memorable charavters, ranging from a couple of small-time crinimal potheads prone to hysterical banter, to the smooth-talking oil company middleman cut to bamboozle his own mother, to some drug smuggling psychopath twins, to a young man estranged from his father since his mother died in Hurricane Katrina.  As the story progresses, these charactesr find themselves on a collision course with each other, and as the tension and action ramp up, it becomes clear that not all of them will survive these events.   To find a copy of this title, go to our Borrower Services desk on the first floor of the Library and you can check one out from the reserve shelf.  Please join Will for an interesting discussion about a riveting book.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Readers' Theatre is a a type of drama performed by "readers" who read from a script and do not have to memorize lines.  Performed with minimal costumes, sets and props, readers' theatre can be not only a great introduction to theatre for kids, but it's also a great way to practice one's oral reading skills, build confidence, and have fun with friends at the same time!

This summer, Miss Sara is leading a Readers' Theatre Club for students entering grades 2-4.  Each week participants will play theatre games, tackle different scripts based on well-known children's books, and make crafts to supplement the stories we're telling together.  The Club will meet five times over the course of the summer, and each meeting will culminate with a performance for family and friends.  While this is a drop-off program, parents/caregivers are asked to return 15 minutes before the end of each class (at 3:45) so they can see the show!

Students must be fluent readers who have completed first grade.  Registration is required and will open two weeks before the event.

Library Director Will Adamczyk will hold his "Eclectic Book Group" this evening.   The book to be read in advance is Last Cowboys of San Geronimo by Ian Stansel (c2017).  This is a contemporary western debut about two brothers locked in a deadly feud, a woman on horseback trailing her husband's killer, and the inescapable ties of home and family.

When Silas Van Loy flees home on horseback to avoid capture for his brother's murder, he is soon followed by both the police and his brother's we, Lena, who is intent on exacting revenge. She reluctantly lets her trusted stable assistant join her in a journey across the wilds of Northern California in the hopes of catching Silas for one final showdown. Stansel follows the chase and shares the story of the brothers' rise from hardscrabble childhood to their reign as the region's preeminent horse trainers, tracking the tense sibling rivalry that ultimately leads to the elder's death.

This is a fully realized tale that challenges notions of the modern West, The Last Cowboys of San Geronimo will satisfy fans of Kent Haruf, Larry McMurtry, Molly Gloss, and Smith Henderson, and establish Stansel as a new voice in this grand tradition.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and stop by the Reference desk to place a reserve on the book.  Copies will also be available on our reserve shelf at the first floor Borrower Services desk.  Join Will for an enjoyable read and discussion.
