Wotiz Gallery Exhibit: Photographer William Grant
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

During the month of December, the Wotiz Gallery of the Milton Public Library will be graced by the photographs of Milton resident William Grant.  William is a passionate photographer who has been largely self-taught.  He enjoys photographing rural scenes in Quebec and New Hampshire and spent some time in 2019 on an exchange in France where he was able to photograph parts of Southwest France.  He particularly enjoys using a slow shutter speed to capture more artistic perspectives.  This display will show primarily color images of landscapes and cityscapes, showing his careful observation of these scenes.   Outside of photography, William enjoys hockey and plays in the Milton town travel league.  He is also an avid baseball player, playing on the Milton team in Cooperstown in 2018.   This young photographer was born in London but has resided in Milton since 2011, and he is currently an 8th grader at Milton Academy.   Please come and enjoy a lovely exhibit which will be on display from December lst through the 28th.

7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Introduction to TaroT Card Reading with Sally Cragin
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Sally Cragin has been reading TaroT cards for years (actually decades), and when she started doing a talk at Roots Natural Foods in Leominster every Fall, she found that people were fascinated with the history of the cards, the meaning of the suits (pentacles or discs, swords, wands and cups) and the "Trump" or Major Arcana cards.  She uses the Ryder-Waite deck and talks about the Renaissance-era origins of the cards, and about art nouveau creator Pamela Colman-Smith and the iconography she used.  She has multiple decks, so this is truly a "hands-on" workshop!  This program is suitable for adults, teens and middle-schoolers.

"From the history of the cards to their meanings, Sally provided an engaging introductory lesson to TaroT.  Program participants very much enjoyed this class, and look forward to Sally's next presentation at the library." -- Kelley Rae Unger, Program Director, Peabody Public Library

There is no sign-up required and this program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Tonight there will be a talk by Milton resident Kim McLarin who wrote the book called Womanish: A Grown Black Woman Speaks on Life and Love" (c2019).  Searing in its emotional honesty, this book is an essay collection by award-winning author Kim McLarin that explores what it means to be a black woman in today's turbulent times.  Writing with candor, wit and vulnerability on topics including dating after divorce, depression, parenting older children, the Obamas, and the often fraught relations between white and black women, McLarin unveils herself at the crossroads of being black, female and middle-aged, and, ultimately, American.  Powerful and timely, this author draws upon a lifetime of experiences to paint a portrait of a black woman trying to come to terms with the world around her, and of a society trying to come to terms with black women."  (Publisher's description).  Please join us for a very interesting discussion about an important and enlightening work.  If you would like to place a hold on this title before ths program, go to www.miltonlibrary.org and click on "view catalog" from the main page, or call the Reference Dept. at (617) 698-5757, x. 3 and staff will be happy to help.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

Described as "Stunning.  A near-perfect movie," by Jordan Rulmy of The Playlist, "The Puzzle" stars Kelly MacDonald, Irrfan Khan and David Denman.  This film, produced in 2018, tells the story of Agnes who, after years of concerning herself exclusively with the needs and wants of her husband and sons, has found something that she wants to do: puzzling.  Stepping out of her domestic bubble to pursue her new hobby, Agnes meets Robert, a wealthy, reclusive inventor who recruits her as his partner for an upcoming world jigsaw tournament.  Each day she spends out in the world takes Agnes further along on the road to a new understanding of herself.  This is a wonderful and heartwarming story, with a rating of R for language. The running time is approximately 103 minutes and it is free and open to the public.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.  Please join us for a tale you will not soon forget!

In order to participate, please take these simple steps:

  • Please register through the library events calendar. Only registered cooks will be able to attend.
  • Borrow a copy of the book from the library and choose a dish. Books are available at the Circulation Desk one month ahead. (If you borrow a cookbook but won't be able to attend the meeting, please return the cookbook so someone else can check it out. Thank you!)

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x.3

There will be a 60-minute presentation this evening by storyteller, musician and political satirist Charle King and his program partner, Candace Cassin.  This powerful event will include the history of the Civil Rights movement in the United States, using songs, narratives by participants at the time, and it will include hundreds of historical images.  There will be plenty of opportunity for audience members to get involved in this inspiring program!   "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn me 'Round" offers the story of the Civil Rights Movement for African Americans from 1955 to 1967, highlighting activitists such as Rosa Parks, Fannie Lou Hamer and Ella Baker.

Charlie King is a musical storyteller who sings and writes passionately about the extraordinary lives of ordinary people.  Pete Seeger hailed him as "One of the finest singers and songwriters of our time."  Charlie has been at the heart of American folk music for over half a century and has been writing songs for the past 45 years.  In October of 2017, he received the annual Phil Ochs Award, in recognition of his music and activism for social and political justice in the spirit of Phil Ochs.  His songs have been recorded and sung by other performers such as Pete Seeger, Holly Near, Ronnie Gilbert, John McCutcheon, Arlo Guthrie, Peggy Seeger, Chad Mitchell and Judy Small.  Billboard said about him: "With encouraging regularity, Charlie King emerges from his self-reflection to remind us of the happy resilience of the human spirit.  His message songs vary between the funny and the frightening, but he pulls them off with unvarying taste, musical skill, and charm."  Please join us for a tribute to civil rights in the month of February.  This program is free and open to the public and is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Wednesday Night at the Movies: Alice's Ordinary People
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Filmmaker Craig Dudnick has produced an incredible film which celebrates the selfless activists of the Chicago Freedom Movement.  He first met Alice Tregay when she contributed many wonderful photographs of her brother, former Evanston [Illinois] Fire Chief Sanders Hicks, to his previous film.  He had no idea at that time of her status as heroine of the Civil Rights Movement.    He hopes that "Alice's Ordinary People" will inspire future generations to "take up the mantle and continue the fight."

Alice's life story reads like a history of the movement.  Early on she fought the "Willis Wagons."  The second-class structures were built to relieve overcrowding in those Chicago schools which served the African American community.  Their very existence perpetuated segregation.  In 1966, Dr. King came to Chicago.  Alice and her husband James Tregay, marched with him, often at great personal risk.  It was at this time that Dr. King joined the Reverend Jesse Jackson, and the Reverend James Bevel to form Operation Breadbasket.  Breadbasket fought racism on many fronts, but its main task was jobs for African Americans, particularly from those businesses drawing profits from the African American community.Under the leadership of Reverend Jackson, the months that Alice and her "ordinary people" spent picketing led to real change.  But it was through her Political Education class that Alice had her most significant impact.  Over a four-year period, thousands were trained to work in independent campaigns.  This new force was integral to the re-election of Ralph Metcalf to Congress (this time as an independent Democrat), to the election of Harold Washington, Mayor, and to making Barack Obama our first African American President.

Alice's contribution is unique in American history, and an hour program can only tell so much.  It is Mr. Dudnick's hope that one day a book will also be written on this important subject.  Please come and be inspired by this excellent documentary to help celebrate Black History Month.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.  The running time is 56 minutes so the start time is 7 PM (not 6:30 per usual).  It is unrated.

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Monday, March 23 from 6:30-7:30pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for March is TBA.

Thank you!)
  • Once you've chosen your recipe, contact Sara by email (struog@ocln.org) or phone (617-898-4951) to let her know what recipe you’ll be trying so we don't have a lot of duplication in the dishes we'll sample on meeting night!

Space is limited and advance registration is required. Registration will open on Monday, March 2. Once you register you will receive more details about the club.  Bon Appetit!

    Contact: Sara Truog   617-898-4951   struog@ocln.org

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Monday, May 18 from 6:30-7:30pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for May is TBA.

Registration will open on Monday, April 27. Once you register you will receive more details about the club.  Bon Appetit!
