     Wade Hall Traveling Postcard Exhibit

Main Streets and Historical Buildings

Dr. Wade Hall was an avid "postcard collector". He collected approximately 25,000 vintage postcards from all over the world during his travels. The quality and size of his collection is impressive because he built it at a time when good, historical postcards were scarce. The dates of these postcards range from the early 1900s to the 1960s. Hall donated his collection to the Troy University Archives on the Troy Campus. The Troy University Libraries and the Troy University Department of Art and Design have made part of his collection available through two traveling postcard exhibits.

The Main Streets exhibit features these cities: Albany (Decatur), Anniston, Athens, Birmingham, Brewton, Carbon Hill, Citronelle, Cullman, Decatur, Demopolis, Dothan, Enterprise, Eufaula, Eutaw, Evergreen, Fairfax (Valley), Foley, Gadsden, Greensboro, Hamilton, Hartselle, Huntsville, Jacksonville, Jasper, Luverne, Mobile, Montgomery, Opelika, Ozark, Prattville, Red Bay, Selma, Silverhill, Sylacauga, Troy, Tuscaloosa, Union Springs, and Uniontown.

The Historical Buildings exhibit features these cities: Alexander City, Athens, Auburn, Bay Minette, Bessemer, Birmingham, Boaz, Brewton, Calera, Centre, Centreville, Dauphin Island, Dothan, Enterprise, Evergreen, Florence, Foley, Fort Rucker, Gadsden, Greenville, Guntersville, Huntsville, LaFayette, Livingston, Marion, Mobile, Montgomery, Point Clear, Selma, Scottsboro, Talladega, Tallassee, Troy, Tuscaloosa, Tuscumbia, Tuskegee, Union Springs, and Wetumpka.

The exhibit is open to the public during regular library hours. For further information on the postcard collection, see Troy University’s webpage at: trojan.troy.edu/library/wadehall/index.html.

In addition to this exhibit, please be sure and check out the Postcard display at our Local History & Genealogy Division, 753 Government Street. For  more information, please call 207-7097.

Libraries Rock!

People have said that Abe Partridge sounds older than his chronological age, and there’s a very good reason for that – he’s packed a lot of living into his 37 years.

Those experiences, ranging from the earthy to the surreal, the spiritual light to the depths of depression, come together with gripping intensity on Partridge’s second full-length album, Cotton Fields and Blood for Days. Over the course of ten songs, this troubadour draws listeners in with a combination of southern gothic storytelling and a dark humor reminiscent of the late Townes Van Zandt – delivered in a gravelly tone that conjures up images of Tom Waits in his barstool warming days.

Partridge may have a gift for communing with ghosts, but he’s not consumed by them. Listening to him unspool tales like “Prison Tattoos” and “Out of Alabama Blues,” it’s impossible to ignore his knack for separating the wheat from the chaff, the gold from the muck as he ponders the further reaches of the region where he’s spent so much of his life. For more information, go to www.abepartridge.com/.

Admission is free. For more information, please call 208-7097.

This month's topic of discussion is The Life She was Given by Ellen Marie Wiseman.

Summary: On a summer evening in 1931, Lilly Blackwood glimpses circus lights from the grimy window of her attic bedroom. Lilly isn't allowed to explore the meadows around Blackwood Manor. She's never even ventured beyond her narrow room. Momma insists it's for Lilly's own protection, that people would be afraid if they saw her. But on this unforgettable night, Lilly is taken outside for the first time--and sold to the circus sideshow.

This month's topic of discussion is Last Christmas in Paris by Hazel Gaynor.

Summary: August 1914. England is at war. As Evie Elliott watches her brother, Will, and his best friend, Thomas Harding, depart for the front, she believes—as everyone does—that it will be over by Christmas, when the trio plan to celebrate the holiday among the romantic cafes of Paris. But as history tells us, it all happened so differently.
