Marie Maber: Selected Paintings, Pottery and Sculpture 2005-2019; Art throughout the Years from a Child of the Sixties

Several pieces in this show have been made using mixed media.  Although some of the artworks are painted traditionally in either oil or acrylic paints, some of the more recent pieces have been made using Mixed Media.  These techniques include spray painting, block printing, stencil printing, relief printing, dimensional paint, polymer clay, and collage.

Three-dimensional works in the show were made using traditional ceramic technology.  The 3D work will be on display in the library lobby exhibit cases, across from the Circulation Desk.

An Art Reception and Technical Talk will take place on Sunday, June 9th.  The reception begins at 2:00 pm.  The Technical Talk will begin at 3:30 pm, and will include explanations of the various media used in the creation of this exhibition.

Marie Maber has been involved with the visual arts her entire life.  She's a painter, sculptor, and writer, with over 100 of her art-related articles in print in newspapers and magazines. Ms. Maber is a Professor of the Fine Arts at Brookdale Community College, in Lincroft, NJ, where she has been since 1993.

Noted local historian, author, U.S. Army Officer and Vietnam Veteran Rick Geffken presents a multi-media talk on one family's experiences during the war years.

In Honor of the 75th Anniversary of D-Day: The Moondance Big Band Concert

Immediately following Mr. Geffken is The Moondance Big Band, a dynamic nineteen-member ensemble. The band’s repertoire spans the Great American Songbook, with beloved classics made famous by legendary names like Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw and Frank Sinatra, to songs from the Rock and Roll era and beyond. Whether it’s a powerful instrumental, a fiery Latin number, a laid-back blues song, or a slow, sultry ballad, this band brings energy and excitement to every performance!

In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe.

Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. One of her relatives was shot. Another was poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more and more Osage were dying under mysterious circumstances, and many of those who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered.

As the death toll rose, the newly created FBI took up the case, and the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to try to unravel the mystery. White put together an undercover team, including a Native American agent who infiltrated the region, and together with the Osage began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history.

This book discussion will be moderated by Colts Neck Librarian Stephanie Laurino. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome to attend, however registration is preferred. Stop by or call the library to reserve your copy of the book today.

Fairy tales pervade our personal lives and popular culture and are deeply embedded in our collective unconscious.  Artistic rescriptings abound in art, music, literature and theater, but film is a particularly engaging medium for the wonder of fairy tales.  As early as the 1890s, fairy tales were adapted for films, but a revolution occurred in 1937 when Walt Disney produced the first animated feature fairy-tale film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. In the decades that followed, writers, artists and directors continued to experiment with the genre.  This talk will take guests on a cinematic journey from Disney to Hitchcock to contemporary reinventions, from the familiar to the fantastically strange, and through space and time, as we investigate the immense power of the great fairy tale tradition.

Dr. Gina M. Miele, a professor of Italian at Montclair State University, received her Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures from Harvard University.  A scholar of Italian literature and folk and fairy tales, she has published in Italica, Marvels and Tales, Fabula, Marvelous Transformations: An Anthology of Tales and Contemporary Critical Perspectives, The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Folktales and Fairy Tales, Teaching Fairy Tales and The Paterson Literary Review. She co-authored the activities manual of the textbook Parliamo Italiano! and is currently at work on an annotated translation of Luigi Capuana’s fairy tale collections.

This event is intended for adult audiences.

Easy enough, but, unbeknownst to Earl, he’s just signed on as a drug courier for a Mexican cartel. He does well – so well, in fact, that his cargo increases exponentially, and Earl is assigned a handler. But he isn’t the only one keeping tabs on Earl; the mysterious new drug mule has also hit the radar of hard-charging DEA agent Colin Bates. And even as his money problems become a thing of the past, Earl’s past mistakes start to weigh heavily on him, and it’s uncertain if he’ll have the time to right those wrongs before law enforcement, or the cartel’s enforcers, catch up to him. In Honor of the 75th Anniversary of D-Day

D-Day, June 6, 1944 - The Longest Walk Remembering WWII: America at War, 1944  Presented by Paul Zigo

Relive the amazing story of the 116th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army’s 29th Infantry Division from D-Day June 6, 1944 to the capture of St. Lo, France, 40 agonizing days later – “The Longest Walk.” The regiment lost one-third of its 3,200 men on Omaha Beach, including more than 350 dead. View photos of the actual invasion, what happened during the course of battle, and color photos of the battlefield today. We will salute the contribution of the Regiment to the Allied victory ultimately achieved on May 8, 1945.

Paul Zigo is the director of the World War II Era Studies Institute, which is dedicated to furthering knowledge about the WWII era and the war's impact on history. He was an Associate Professor of History, Brookdale; a former Director, Center for World War II Studies and a founding member of the National Museum of the US Army.

On June 6, 1944, thousands of soldiers from all over the world arrived in Normandy to defeat Nazism and re-establish freedom. The Monmouth County Library will be commemorating this historic day with a series of events, culminating on June 6, 2019, D-Day's 75th Anniversary.

Advance care planning can be daunting -- not only because it is difficult for many of us to think about aging and death, but also because there are a lot of terms and forms that can complicate the process.  Conversation of Your Life is a program to help you let family, friends, and doctors understand your wishes through advance care planning.  This series aims to provide all the pertinent information you may need to communicate them ahead of time, saving your loved ones from having to make emotionally taxing decisions on your behalf when the time comes.

You are encouraged to attend all of the sessions in the series, but are not required to do so.  Seating is limited.  To reserve your space, please register below or call  732-683-8980.

All sessions are 10:00 am - 12:00 noon.

April 26 - Starting the Conversation: Personal Values.  What you want and how to get it.  Our program begins with a discussion on personal values and understanding what is important to you at the end of life.

May 3 - First Friday for Seniors: Managing Your Finances.  Elder law is a specialty focused on issues affecting the aging population.  This can include guidance on issues related to healthcare, long term care planning, preservation/transfer of assets, and Medicare/Medicaid.

May 17 - Advance Care Planning: Why is it important? Which is right for me?  Learn the importance of advance care planning and the variety of documents available.  Discover which document best serves your needs.

May 24 - Hospice: The Greatest Benefit Medicare Offers  Gain a comprehensive understanding of hospice, one of the Medicare program's best, and least utilized, benefits.  Learn about hospice philosophy and levels of care.  There will be discussions with a variety of agencies.

May 31 - Everything You Wanted to Know About Planning a Funeral (but were afraid to ask).  You have options! Come and learn about the interesting and ever-changing options in funeral planning.  Discussions with Funeral Consumers Alliance of Princeton.

June 7 - The Next Steps: An Empowered Consumer's Action Plan.  A session for review and reflection.  What are your next steps? Having shared this journey for the past 6 weeks, let's hear from you!

The Conversation of Your Life (COYL) program is presented by volunteers in the health care field, and is run by the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute in 14 New Jersey Counties.  The goal of COYL is to encourage more individuals in New Jersey to engage in fruitful dialogue -- the Conversation of Your Life -- to let individuals' friends, family, or doctors understand and respect their end-of-life wishes through advance care planning.  COYL is generously supported by The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey.  To learn more, visit: njhcqi.org/COYL.

The 3D work will be on display in the library lobby exhibit cases.

Following the reception, the artist will provide a Technical Talk at 3:30 pm, which will include explanations of the various media used in the creation of this exhibition.

History in Monmouth: Major General Charles Lee - Hero or Traitor?

The most controversial leader on either side at the Battle of Monmouth was American Major General Charles Lee. As commander of the American advanced forces during the first half of the fight, he is accused, by some historians, of almost losing the battle. Other authors claim that he saved the day not once, but twice. Dr. David Martin will discuss and assess General Lee’s critical influence on the battle, with particular attention to Lee’s own statements at his court-martial proceedings.

Dr. David Martin, the President of the Friends of Monmouth Battlefield and an award-winning author, teacher and lecturer, will offer new analyses of important individuals who helped shape Monmouth County.

Join the Friends of Monmouth Battlefield during their Annual Reenactment of the Battle of Monmouth.  The dates of the 241st Anniversary of this Battle are June 22 and 23, 2019.

The Overstory by Richard Powers

An Air Force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits a hundred years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light. These and other strangers, each summoned in different ways by trees, are brought together in a last stand to save the continent’s few remaining acres of forest.
