PAFA Presents: History of Philadelphia Through Art

Wednesday, May 30, at 7 p.m.
Community Room, Abington Free Library

“History of Philadelphia Through Art” The historic collection of artworks in PAFA’s galleries captures the story of Philadelphia as a city on the cutting edge of the 19th century, leading the country toward new discoveries in technology, creativity and civic engagement. Take a whirlwind tour of 18th and 19th century paintings that illustrate Philadelphia’s greatest accomplishments as a city of firsts, including the founding of the first museum, the first public waterworks and public fountain, the first steamboat on the Schuylkill River, the first medical school and university, and many more.

Register at the Information Desk (215-885-5180, ext. 13) or online here.

Also check out PAFA’s current exhibition
“BENJAMIN WEST AND THE FOUNDING OF THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS AND THE PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMY OF THE FINE ARTS”

Which explores Benjamin West’s role in the founding of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and of PAFA itself. West was born outside of Philadelphia and went on to help form the RA, become the President there, be made the court painter to George III and become an “Honored Academician” at PAFA. This exhibition explores West’s important role in the establishment of the RA and PAFA through more than sixty paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, manuscripts, and books.

In addition to the founding stories of the RA and PAFA, this exhibition recognizes the other artist-founders of PAFA, West’s role as the teacher of eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century American artists, and the development of monumental history paintings.

Explore a new mystery and share your love of the genre with other readers!

This month's book is "The Eyre Affair," by Jasper Fforde.

In a world where you can actually get lost (literally) in literature, Thursday Next, a notorious Special Operative in literary detection, races against time to stop the world's Third Most Wanted criminal from kidnapping characters, including Jane Eyre, from works of literature, forcing her to dive into the pages of a novel to stop literary homicide, in a wildly imaginative, mesmerizing thriller. - (Baker & Taylor)

Copies of the book are available at the Front Desk.  We encourage registration. Call or drop by the Front Desk to register.

The Mystery Tuesdays Book Club explores a new mystery on the first Tuesday of each month (except in July and August). Monica D'Antonio of Montgomery County Community College hosts.

Why Rain Barrels? Save the planet and your money

Rain Barrel painted yellow with purple flowers

RaindropPresented by the Abington Environmental Advisory Council

Learn how you can make a difference.
Attend our workshop:
Wednesday, June 6, from 7-8 pm
at Abington Free Library

You will learn...

Why you need a Rain Barrel

  • You can help the environment by collecting the rain-water from your roof and gutters with a rain barrel.
  • Rain barrels help lessen flooding, pollution and erosion.
  • With less rain-water running-off the land, less pollution will flow into our creeks and rivers.
  • Collecting and using your rain-water can also save you money on your water and sewer bills.

To register for this free program, email kmcinnis@mclinc.org, in the Library Office (215-885-5180, ext. 15) or online here soon.
