Registration for Science in the Summer begins! Children entering grades 2 through 6 can sign up for this free, fun science enrichment program provided by The Franklin Institute. This year we explore the Science of Sports. Behind every professional basketball player, gymnast, swimmer, and sprinter is a team of scientists who help athletes excel in their sport, from trainers, nutritionists and physical therapists to statisticians and equipment engineers. Students will learn about these scientists and tackle basic scientific concepts through fun, hands-on activities like experimenting with healthy sports drink recipes and creating their own bouncy balls to test bounce height against other sports balls. Two-day session dates are July 5 and 6, or July 31 and August 1. Sign up is online and requires an email address. Please visit http://www.scienceinthesummer.com/ to sign up or for more information.

“Do you want to become a confident public speaker and strong leader? If so, Toastmasters is the place for you. You’ll find a supportive learn-by-doing environment that allows you to achieve your goals at your own pace.”

“Every Toastmasters journey begins with a single speech. During their journey, they learn to tell their stories. They listen and answer. They plan and lead. They give feedback—and accept it. Through our community of learners, they find their path to leadership. By regularly giving speeches, giving and receiving feedback in a supportive atmosphere, and guiding others to achieve their goals in a supportive atmosphere, leaders emerge from the Toastmasters program.”

Join us for an engaging discussion of great literature!

This month’s classic is “Fahrenheit 451” Ray Bradbury.

“The classic dystopian novel of a post-literate future, Fahrenheit 451 stands alongside Orwell’s 1984 and Huxley’s Brave New World as a prophetic account of Western civilization’s enslavement by the media, drugs and conformity.  Bradbury’s powerful and poetic prose combines with uncanny insight into the potential of technology to create a novel which, decades on from first publication, still has the power to dazzle and shock.” --harpercollins.co.uk

The Great Books Group meets the second Tuesday of each month from 2 PM to 3:30 PM, except in July and August.  New members are always welcome!

Enjoy the company of other readers as we discuss a new book on the third Saturday of each month.

This month’s Saturday Book Club selection is “Let the Great World Spin,” by Colum McCann.

“In a tale set in Manhattan of 1974, a radical young Irish monk struggles with personal demons while making his home among Bronx prostitutes, a group of mothers is separated by personal differences in spite of shared grief over their lost Vietnam soldier sons, and a young grandmother attempts to prove her worth by soliciting men at the side of her teenage daughter.” - (Baker & Taylor)

Our club has been meeting continually since 2001, but we always welcome new members!  Dr. Harold Halbert will lead the discussion.

Copies of the book are available at the front desk.

All of the presenters are Master Gardener Volunteers from the Montgomery County Cooperative Extension.  Master Gardeners are volunteers trained by the Penn State Cooperative Extension.

Once they complete their training, Master Gardeners help the Extension better serve the home gardening public by answering questions, speaking to groups, working with 4-H horticultural projects, participating in civic beautification, maintaining demonstration gardens, teaching plant sciences and horticulture, maintaining this web site, and in many other ways.
