HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES:

COMICS CRAFTING

Join Pittsburgh-based artists Juan Fernandez and Sally Ingraham along with the Comics Workbook team for an afternoon of comics crafting for all ages. Learn about color and line, explore the rhythm of the grid, and take your comics-making game to a new level! Simple exercises will push you in mind-bending directions.

Sally Ingraham is a cartoonist, educator and journalist based in Pittsburgh. She makes comics about Pittsburgh and bird watching, and co-writes the "Suzy and Cecil" daily strip (with Gabriella Tito) on Comicsworkbook.com. She facilitates the Comics Workbook Rowhouse Residency, is a managing editor of the CW Daily News, and runs the CW Roller Derby "of the mind" League. She is focused on documenting the current and historic place of women in the comics industry, is working to build the Women's Comics Library, and is developing a comics curriculum by and for girls.

Juan José Fernández is a cartoonist, and a Pittsburgh comics community organizer, most recently named as one of “Pittsburgh’s Creative Forces: 12 People to Meet in 2017” in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and one of seven 2016 Fuerza awardees by Café Con Leche for providing Pittsburgh Latinx leadership. He co-organizes the annual Pittsburgh Zine Fair, leads the Pittsburgh Comics Salon, and provides educational outreach for the Comics Workbook and the ToonSeum. He currently works at the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council.

ZINE MAKING

Join multidisciplinary artist and designer Maggie Lynn Negrete to learn how to make a one-page mini-zine to take home, collage into a collaborative community zine and view sample handmade zines! Supplies will be provided by the Pittsburgh Zine Fair.

A Southwestern Pennsylvania native and graduate of Vassar College, Maggie Lynn Negrete is a multidisciplinary artist and designer specializing in illustration, zines and hand-lettering. Her work explores femininity, community and the occult, with aesthetics influenced by 19th- and 20th-century illustration, psychedelia and her heritage of printers. An important part of Negrete's practice is as an educator, focusing on elevating youth voices and promoting civic engagement through zines, storytelling and typography.

THE ART OF CARTOONING

For the Lebo Comics Fest, Wayno has created two hands-on activities. Participants can color sample pages from File Under: Pop, a coloring book featuring portraits of recording artists, with fun biographical facts about each celebrity. Attendees will also have the chance to collaborate with Wayno on creating a gag cartoon panel. Wayno will provide an unfinished cartoon for you to complete with your own art, dialogue or caption.

Wayno’s 40-page File Under: Pop coloring book will be available for purchase directly from the artist during the event.

Wayno® is a cartoonist, illustrator, writer, and musician, and is the creator of the cartoon panel WaynoVision. His illustrations have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Nickelodeon Magazine, Pittsburgh Magazine, and many other publications worldwide. He performs on ukulele, harmonica and vocals with The Red Beans & Rice Combo (who played in our courtyard concert series), and serves as the Chair of the National Cartoonists Society's Pittsburgh Chapter. Wayno lives in Mt. Lebanon with his wife Kimberly, and their two cats.

FACE PAINTING

Have your face painted by professional makeup artist and Mt. Lebanon resident, Noelle Marinelli! Morgantown, WV native Noelle Marinelli has been making up faces since her career began in New York City in 2000. A sought after television makeup artist and kids’ groomer, Noelle's face painting work has appeared in Parents, Kiwi and Nick Jr. magazines. Noelle lives in Mount Lebanon with her son Max, husband Brian, and their French Bulldog, Dante. Noelle is relishing the opportunity to get creative with her face painting in the Southwestern PA area; her mission is that her art may encourage imagination, foster creativity and build trust. You can see her work at http://www.noellemarinelli.com and on social media via her Facebook page, Noelle Facepaints.

POP-UP DISPLAYS

Visit and peruse coloring and engaging pop-up displays of comics, cartoons and graphic novels presented by the ToonSeum, Pittsburgh's Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, and the independent Polish Hill-based shop, The Copacetic Comics Company. Meet historian John Kelly, executive director of The ToonSeum, and historian Bill Boichel, founder of PIX: The Pittsburgh Indie Comics Expo and owner of The Copacetic Comics Company. Founded in 2000, the objective of The Copacetic Comics Company has always been to present comics in its proper context in the current cultural sphere. Toward this end, its offerings of comic books, comic strip collections, graphic novels and the like are surrounded by equivalent offerings from comics' cultural peers in literature, cinema, music and art. The key distinguishing characteristic of The Copacetic Comics Company is that of editorial discernment. A knowledge of and insight into the history and workings of comics offers a vision of what makes it unique and what it shares with and draws from other mediums of expression; what was best in its past, what is invigorating its present, and what looks most promising in its future.
