The Godfather films continue to fascinate audiences. They have become some of the most enduring in the industry and have played a major role in influencing audience perceptions and misperceptions of criminal activities and family life. Greg Blank will examine themes of family, family values, the criminal empire of the Corleone family as a metaphor for American capitalism and values, and the immigrant experience, and the film’s legacy of phrases that endure in the contemporary popular lexicon (“I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse”; “keep your friends close, but your enemies closer”, etc.). It will also explore the folklore, legend, and background stories on the actual making of the film. A Long Island-based filmmaker, film historian, and lecturer, Blank has over 15 years of experience as a producer, director, cinematographer, and editor.

The 1936 Berlin Olympic Games were used by Hitler to spread Nazi propaganda. Germany may bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics to highlight and warn against the dangers of this kind of propaganda. The 1936 Olympics were marred by discrimination against Jewish athletes and are remembered for Jesse Owens' defiance of Hitler's Aryan supremacy myth. Additionally, the 1972 Munich Olympics were marred by the tragic Black September terrorist attack, a moment only officially acknowledged by the International Olympic Committee in 2016. Presented by Evan Weiner.

Join the us to discuss Red Memory:  The Afterlives of China's Cultural Revolution by Tania Branigan

KIRKUS REVIEWS'   BEST BOOKS OF 2023

  Kirkus Prize  KIRKUS PRIZE  FINALIST

The former China correspondent for the Guardian explores the “cumulative forgetting” of the devastations of the Cultural Revolution.

London-based journalist Branigan, who lived in China from 2008 until recently, delivers a series of poignant, engaging stories that reveal the deep scars left by the Cultural Revolution, which radiated violently across the country from “Red August” 1966 to 1976. Across a beautifully rendered text, the author astutely examines the Maoist ideology that drove the tumultuous class struggle and destruction, leading to the deaths “of as many as 2 million for their supposed political sins and another 36 million hounded.” Prompted to explore the history more deeply after viewing artist Xu Weixin’s exhibit of huge portraits in Beijing of those who “had played a part in this madness, as victim or perpetrator; often both,” Branigan digs into numerous vivid personal tales. Many were teenagers at the time, and some were children of the political elite; they responded to Mao’s direct appeal to “be martial” by becoming zealous devotees of the Red Guard. They inflicted violence on their teachers and denounced their parents, all in the name of destroying the “Four Olds”—old ideas, old culture, old customs, old habits. Many of the perpetrators, including current leader Xi Jinping, would later be disgraced themselves, sent to reeducation camps in rural communities for years afterward. Only Mao’s death and the ousting of the Gang of Four would end the mayhem. Throughout this sensitive, well-researched narrative, Branigan delicately delves into these shattered lives. Many of her subjects are still searching for justice or recognition, while others remain nostalgic for their patriotic youth. The author notes that while the hysteria and fanaticism of the time “forged modern China,” the events are rarely discussed today—even as the trauma continues to resonate deeply.  - Kirkus Review

A heartbreaking, revelatory evocation of “the decade that cleaved modern China in two.”

Join Professor Ron Brown as he presents a program exploring one of the great avenues of the world. A stroll along the Champs Élysées in Paris is one of those must do experiences of the City of Light. Running between the Place de la Concorde in the east and the Place de Gaulle in the west, where the Arc de Triomphe is located, the avenue has been the model for every city that aspires to greatness. King Louis the Great, the Sun King, commissioned his court architect André Le Nôtre to carve out this avenue and line it with monuments to the greatness of the King. Even its length, 1.2 miles, became the global standard of future grand avenues.

After the Revolutionary War ended on September 3, 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris with Great Britain, America found itself as a new country, with new freedoms, new challenges and a new President, President George Washington. One of George Washington’s first acts as the new President was to come to Long Island to tour the island and to thank those that had helped in the defeat of the British. This “Grand Tour” was carefully documented in Washington’s journal, but some of the places he visited have been lost in time. Join Eco-Photo Explorers for a fascinating historical adventure as we trace the route of Washington’s tour. Along the way, we will share some stories about his visit, and about his connections to this area, and uncover the places he visited and learn about what is on those locations today. The history of Washington’s tour of Long Island is part of the cultural and historical fabric of our island.

Join us to learn how to play board games from our newly launched circulating Board Game Collection! The featured game at this session will be Azul. In the game Azul, players take turns drafting colored tiles from suppliers to their player board. Later in the round, players score points based on how they've placed their tiles to decorate the palace. Extra points are scored for specific patterns and completing sets; wasted supplies harm the player's score. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins. Dave and Ginger from Game Master Games will be on hand to teach you how to play. Registrants are welcome to come at any time and stay as long or as little as they like.

Join Instructor Judy Hausman Leff, a Vibrational Sound Therapy practitioner certified by the Vibrational Sound Association, for a Sound Bath Meditation Session.

Sound Bath Meditation is a form of meditation where sound is used as a therapeutic tool to help participants disengage from their busy, thinking brains and relax into deeper, meditative state. Judy will use crystal bowls, metal bowls, chimes, gongs, other drone and overtone-emitting instruments and her voice to create these sound vibrations. Experience with meditation is not needed! As a matter of fact, Sound Bath Meditation is really great for first time meditators or people who have trouble with meditating.

Participants will be lying down on the floor for this meditation session and need to bring:

  • Yoga Mat or Blankets
  • Pillows or Cushions if desired
