Art for a Cause on Exhibit - Month of Jan.

For the month of January, we will have on exhibit international posters of Art for a Cause, a new exhibit from the art collection of Stephen Lewis. Please stop in during normal open hours for viewing.

Art that wears its politics on its sleeve, that is a good way to describe a new exhibit at the Newbury Town Library. The exhibit consists of posters from several countries, and the causes they espouse are many. Posters on display are about issues like the Spanish Civil War, migration, anti-Fascism, Angolan independence, censorship and other subjects. In addition to the subject matter, viewers are treated to art styles from many artists, and many countries. Stephen Lewis, the exhibitor, describes the exhibit as “a bit of art, a bit of message and a bit of history”. Around 35 posters will be on display from January 3 through January 27.

Even if people are not familiar with the issues, the various styles of graphic art should interest people who view the exhibit. This is an opportunity to view artistic expression that is as varied as the themes of the posters.

If people want to see more of Mr. Lewis’s posters, they have no further to drive than to the Beverly Public Library. The theme of the exhibit there is Ban the Bomb. That exhibit is posters protesting the development, testing retention and use of nuclear weapons. The other exhibit is The Struggle for Women’s Equality at the Peabody Institute Library. Both of these exhibits run for the month of January

These posters are part of 6800 posters in the collection of Stephen Lewis, a retired trade union activist. He has been gathering posters in many countries over the past 20 years, and been sharing them with the general public for the past 15 years. Stephen has exhibited at a number of public libraries in Massachusetts and two of the state Heritage parks. He has presented at the annual conference of the National Council on Public History, and on some cable television programs. This is his seventh exhibit at the Newbury Town Library. His exhibits have been well received by many library patrons.

2:00 PM  -  3:00 PM MUSIC CONCERT - ACOUSTIC DUO, KNOCK ON WOOD

Free concert: Acoustic duo Knock on Wood rocks out at Newbury Library Jan. 27 from 2-3pm

It’s not your typical guitar-fiddle folk act.

Howie Newman and Steve Latanision (a.k.a. Knock on Wood) have teamed up to form a lively acoustic duo that plays funny original songs (suitable for all ages) as well as well-known covers, spanning everything from the Beatles to Steely Dan to the Dropkick Murphys. Their varied repertoire features excellent musicianship, tight harmonies and … lots of fun.

Reservations are required. Please register online below.

*This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Newbury Town Library.

Newman (guitar, harmonica, vocals) is the songwriter and his engaging manner, which includes G-rated comedy and audience participation, has charmed audiences all over New England. Song topics include Smartphones, the weather, not-so-graceful aging and his wife’s inability to parallel park.

A former sportswriter for the Boston Globe and other newspapers, he will also be performing some of his many baseball songs, including “It’s the End of the Curse and We Know It,” an R.E.M. parody.

Newman’s partner is Steve Latanision (fiddle, mandolin, vocals), who has been playing bluegrass, Irish, Americana, folk, jazz, and country music in the New England for the past 25 years, and has appeared on more than 200 albums. Latanision has performed with many local musicians and bands, including The Squeezebox Stompers, Matt Borrello, Ashley Jordon and Lonesome Jukebox.

“We’re not the traditional guitar-and-fiddle combo,” says Newman. “Steve and I like to keep things up-tempo, do a lot of rock covers and get the audience involved. The idea is to play some great music and have fun.”

For more information about Knock on Wood, including videos, music samples and photos, visit www.howienewman.com/knockonwood.

Tuesday, February 13, 2018, 6-8pm: Intro to Lightroom II

In this second of two, 2-hour sessions, the basic edit tools such as exposure, clarity, and vibrance will be covered as well as the use of presets or filters to change the “look” of photos to one of many popular styles. The second half of the session will be devoted to application of the tools to participants’ own images.

A life-long photographer, I also bring a background in teaching and computers to my photography sessions. I currently teach photography and editing software at Newburyport Adult and Community Education and SEE Shore Photography, also in Newburyport.

6:30 PM  -  7:30 PM Albert Einstein: Relatively Speaking

In this one-hour interactive performance, actor and storyteller George Capaccio invites you to enter the boundary-breaking universe that is the mind of Albert Einstein. You will discover that time and space are inseparable, that time actually slows down the faster you go, and that if you could travel at the speed of light, time would actually stop!

But there’s a lot more to the story than Einstein’s insights into the nature of reality. George focuses on the great scientist’s very human qualities, including his sense of humor, his fondness for Jewish jokes, and his trials and tribulations as a family man. As part of the show, you’ll time travel with George on the trajectory of Einstein’s life — from lowly patent clerk in a Swiss office to world-class physicist.

Albert Einstein: Relatively Speaking is the first part of a two-part dramatization. The second part — Albert Einstein: Reluctant Superstar — is also a stand-alone, separately scheduled performance but focused on Einstein’s escape from Germany and his lifelong involvement with humanitarian issues and principled political activism.

“Human knowledge and skills alone cannot lead humanity to a happy and dignified life. Humanity has every reason to place the proclaimers of high moral standards and values above the discoverers of objective truth.” — ALBERT EINSTEIN

If you’ve done some family research but didn’t get very far, or if you’re just wondering how to begin looking for your ancestors, come to Genealogy Club! You will receive ideas, resources and motivation to help you uncover the life stories of your ancestors.

We look forward to having special events with professional genealogists to speak about particular issues, or just to give tips and suggestions for planning and organizing your family research.  We’ll discuss what to do when you hit a wall, how to locate military records, and talk about DNA analysis. Ancestry.com is available for your use at all library computers.

The Genealogy Club meets on the first Thursday of the month and is open to anyone with an interest in discovering who you are and where you came from.
