Meet the artist:

Duffy Greba

My name is Duffy Greba. I live in Greensburg, PA. I do cross stitch and quilting to create my pictures and household items, such as quilts, table toppers, placemats, and many other items.  I started to cross stitch by doing baby quilts for my family and friends. I further expanded my cross stitching by making pictures of the United States, Bible verses, Native American scenes, along with Celtic and all holidays such as Halloween and Christmas. I started these pictures about 10 years ago.

My quilts combine cross stitching and patchwork which I started about 4 years ago.  I was introduced to 2 local quilters in my area and they have showed me many ways to combine my love of cross stitch to make many beautiful quilts. I started working with patchwork quilts about 2 years ago.  They showed me how to make patchwork table toppers, place mats and potholders.

I am a veteran of the United States Navy of 14 years, (Desert Storm and Southern Watch) and husband and father of 2 children.

I hope you like our items. All items can be special ordered to your liking. Please contact me with any questions or to discuss special orders:  degreba2011@hotmail.com  724-205-6385.

Solar power?  In Pittsburgh?  Yes! Solar energy is very effective and economical, and is the reason behind hundreds of western Pennsylvanians going solar. Solarize Allegheny is a community-based outreach program sponsored by the Heinz Endowments and the Allegheny County Health Department designed to help homeowners go solar.  This campaign educates people about solar technology and connects them with pre-screened local solar installers in order to receive a free quote for their home or business. You will find out at the workshop if your home is a good candidate for solar. Also hear how to save money with Conservation Consultant's Sound Home Plan to make your home more energy efficient.     Contact: Stephanie Zimble   412.828.9532   zimbles@einetwork.net

The whole population moves once every six years (on average).  Packing is moving's money maker, yet with some instruction you can do it yourself.  Oakmont's Bongo Tommie was a 27 year career mover.  He worked for Allied, Mayflower, and United Van lines.  With United, he was on several award winning teams.  He "ran" the East Coast near 7 years and was self-employed as a commission contractor for 5 years.  He knows the moving game and can save you money no matter how far you are moving.  He will show you how to properly pack a dishbarrel carton with many hints on stemware, glassware and paintings, even oil paintings.  He will have an array of cartons and packing material for demonstration purposes.  He will be open to all thoughtful questions.  Like anything, the more you know, the better off you will be.  Please join him on Saturday, June 17th at 10:00 am for this instructive seminar!

6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Charlie Chaplin's Red Letter Days with Don Kamin
    Contact: Stephanie Zimble   412.828.9532   zimbles@einetwork.net

We are pleased to invite you to a special presentation by Pittsburgh mime artist and Chaplin expert Dan Kamin, who trained Robert Downey, Jr. for his Oscar-nominated performance in Chaplin and created Johnny Depp’s physical comedy routines in Benny and Joon.

Dan will introduce Charlie Chaplin’s Red Letter Days. This newly discovered eyewitness account reveals what was going on behind the scenes in Chaplin's fun factory as he was creating the hilarious comedies that rocketed him to worldwide fame. Written by Fred Goodwins, one of the actors in the company, the breezy narrative originally appeared in 1916 as a series of thirty-seven articles in the British magazine Red Letter.  Its republication marks a major find for cinema buffs and anyone who has ever been touched by Chaplin's artistry.  Dan annotated the book to highlight its many revelations about Chaplin and the familiar faces that populate his films.  In his talk, illustrated with colorful images, music and video from the period, Dan will reveal the backstory of this fascinating excursion into the private world of Hollywood’s first superstar.

    Contact: Stephanie Zimble   412.828.9532   zimbles@einetwork.net

Join Louise Sturgess, Executive Director of the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, at the library!  This presentation of 72 images, so rich in detail, was created in 2008 for the Frick Art & Historical Center’s exhibition, “A Panorama of Pittsburgh: Nineteenth-Century Printed Views.” Following an overview of Pittsburgh’s physical development, the presentation concentrates on a series of 19th-century lithographs, watercolors, prints, and even a letter that were made to describe, publicize, and promote the city. It concludes with a fast-paced tour of 21st-century Pittsburgh, showing how the 19th-century lives on in notable landmarks. Memorable quotations from David McCullough (author/historian), Walter C. Kidney (author), David Lewis (urban planner), and Clyde Hare (photographer), among others, help define Pittsburgh’s unique character and significance.

Our theme for summer reading this year is "Building a Better World" - come learn about how early Pittsburghers built a better city!

Do you love to browse through cookbooks and try new recipes? Are you a foodie? Would you like to meet new people and share food with them? Then this is the club for you! Each month, we will select a cookbook and display it at the programming table. Look through the book and choose a recipe you want to make. Mark the page with a post-it note with your name so that we know who will be cooking what. Ask a library staff member to copy the recipe for you to take home. Prepare your food or beverage and bring it to Cookbook Club, which will take place on the second Monday of every month at 6PM at the library. Tableware will be provided. Food, new friends, and fun! Please join us and start cooking !
