#6 on the AFI list of Top 100 Comedies, Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles is considered by many the funniest movie ever made. Vulgar, crude, and occasionally scandalous in its racial humor, this hilarious bad-taste spoof of Westerns, co-written by Richard Pryor, features Cleavon Little as the first black sheriff of a stunned town scheduled for demolition by an encroaching railroad. Little and co-star Gene Wilder have great chemistry, and the delightful supporting cast includes Harvey Korman, Slim Pickens, and Madeline Kahn as a chanteuse modelled on Marlene Dietrich. 1974. 93 minutes, Rated R.

    Contact: Information Desk   766-2360 x325

In the ‘40s and ‘50s, following the war and marking the beginning of the Cold War era, a trend in American movies took root that came to be known as film noir or black cinema.  Highly stylized, dark and moody, these films centered on characters that looked at life through cynical eyes.  Brooding, disillusioned men and mysterious femme fatales recounted their dark tales with witty, razor-sharp dialog.  Using video and audio clips, Richard Knox explores the enduring appeal of film noir by focusing on the 1944 classic Double Indemnity, and the murder case that inspired the movie.

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio is regarded as one of the most revolutionary artists of the Italian Baroque era.  He abandoned the rules that had guided Renaissance artists for centuries and introduced a more realistic style.  His paintings mixed the sacred with the profane, biblical scenes populated with prostitutes, beggars, and thieves, all bathed in the dramatic lighting for which he is best known.   Radical at the time, his influence is seen in works by Rubens, Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Velazquez.  Join Prof. Thomas Germano as he looks at the recent scholarship related to Caravaggio and addresses the discovery of “lost” paintings and a trove of drawings from his student years.
