They experienced a slight gain in reading ability and attitudes toward reading, while those who read to people experienced a decrease on both measures. Even more noticeable, there was no attrition in the dog group, while one third of those reading to humans failed to complete the program"- Library Journal

This month's book: The Landry News by Andrew Clements

Summary: A fifth-grader starts a newspaper with an editorial that prompts her burnt-out classroom teacher to really begin teaching again, but he is later threatened with disciplinary action as a result.

A monthly book club for kids in elementary school. Sign up in the Children's Library to get a copy of the book from the library. The first 15 kids who sign up will receive a FREE paperback copy of the book, generously provided by the Friends of the Pawtucket Public Library. When the free copies have been all given out, families can borrow a copy of the book from the library. Kids can read the book on their own or with someone else. All the readers are invited to attend the Book Club for Kids program on Saturday, April 8th  at 11:00am in the Children’s Caidin Room to laugh about favorite parts, play a trivia game, and make a craft.

A special thank you to the Friends of the Pawtucket Public Library for sponsoring the Book Club for Kids program.

AEROSPACE is the pure science and technology of atmospheric and space flight.  The term AEROSPACE  combines the terms "aeronautics" and "space."

Each class will be presented in a "Science Standard"/STEM (science, technology, engineering) format. These formats include:

  • A brief historical background
  • An overview of energy and fuel that will be used
  • Scientific Theory and application of Newton's laws
  • Putting theory into motion-watch your projects go!

The classes work best if you attend each one. If anyone misses 2 classes without notifying the children's library their spot will be given to someone on the waiting list.

These classes are intended for ages 8-14 years old.

Register with a brother, sister or friend and be a science team!

Special thanks to the Rhode Island and Massachusettes Civil Air Patrols for their committment to education and for compiling all the aerospace activities.

This year's Kids Reading Across RI selection is Save Me a Seat by Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan.

Book Summary: Ravi has just moved to the United States from India and has always been at the top of his class; Joe has lived in the same town his whole life and has learning problems--but when their lives intersect in the first week of fifth grade they are brought together by a common enemy (the biggest bully in their class) and the need to take control of their lives.

Join us at the Pawtucket Public Library for a Book Club for Kids session. The following week on Sat. May 13th from 2pm -4pm attend the Kick-Off Event for Kids Reading Across RI at the RI State House to meet the author, get your book signed, and participate in fun activities.

This summer reading program is Rhode Island’s statewide One State, One Book initiative for students in grades 3-6. Activities include a kick-off event at the State House with the author, writing workshops, book signings, fun family activities and demonstrations linked to the themes of the book. Kids Reading Across Rhode Island is offered in partnership with the Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services’ Summer Reading Program and the RI Center for the Book.

"A study at Tufts University found that students who read to dogs have better outcomes than students who read to humans. They experienced a slight gain in reading ability and attitudes toward reading, while those who read to people experienced a decrease on both measures. Even more noticeable, there was no attrition in the dog group, while one third of those reading to humans failed to complete the program"- Library Journal
