Lead like a pro

Free and open to all. Join author Matthew Raidbard as he discusses the importance of coaches viewing themselves as leaders and teaching them about leadership practice while promoting his book, "Lead Like a Pro".   Athletic coaches are asked to wear more and more hats with each passing season, and in many cases, they are not receiving the support or training necessary to help them succeed in their ever-expanding roles. Whether you are a volunteer coaching your child's team, a part-time high school coach who's also a teacher, or a full-time college or professional coach, this presentation will teach you new ways to enhance your leadership style and become a better coach for your athletes and team. Matthew is the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance & Student-Athlete Development at Quinnipiac University and has a Doctorate in Educational Leadership

oc epsAlso joining us will be strength and conditioning coach, Owen Campbell (CSCS), from Edge Performance Systems to talk about the importance of nutrition and conditioning for young athletes. OC works with professional  (NHL and NFL) and D1 college level athletes as well as high school athletes at the facility in Foxboro. He is a published scientific author in the Journal of Exercise and Nutrition.

mother daughter murder nightMother-Daughter Murder Night is a big-hearted mystery about a trio of amateur sleuths--a grandma, single mom, and teenage girl--who come together to solve a murder in their coastal California town.It's a murder mystery, a family story, and a love letter to strong women everywhere.I never expected to write a novel, but when my mom got diagnosed with advanced cancer in 2020, it changed my priorities. I wrote Mother-Daughter Murder Night as a way to connect with my mom during a tough time. I hope it brings you as much joy as it has brought us.

   2:00 PM Virtual: Smithsonian: For the Love of Mars

for the love of marsMars and its secrets have fascinated and mystified humans since ancient times. Due to its vivid color and visibility, geologic kinship with Earth, and potential as our best hope for settlement, Mars embodies everything that inspires us about space and exploration. For the Love of Mars surveys the red planet's place in the human imagination, beginning with ancient astrologers and skywatchers and ending in our present moment of exploration and virtual engagement.

You’re invited to come learn alongside Matt Shindell, National Air and Space Museum curator, as he introduces viewers to historical figures across eras and around the world who have made sense of this mysterious planet. Shindell will highlight historical figures such as:

Mayan astrologer priests who incorporated Mars into seasonal calendars and religious ceremonies;
Babylonian astrologers who discerned bad omens;
figures of the Scientific Revolution who struggled to comprehend it as a world;
Victorian astronomers who sought signs of intelligent life; and
20th- and 21st-century scientists who have established a technological presence on its surface.

Along the way, we will encounter writers and artists from each period who take readers and viewers on imagined journeys to Mars.

 By focusing on the diverse human stories behind the telescopes and behind the robots we know and love, Shindell will show how Mars exploration has evolved in ways that have also expanded knowledge about other facets of the universe. Register now for this captivating voyage through time!

This month's title: Long Flight Home by Alan Hlad

    Location: Senior Center
   6:30 PM  -  7:30 PM Beyond the Book with Local Author Judy Lannon

Judy Lannon writes women’s contemporary fiction. Her debut novel, Nine Days, was published in March 2022 and has been recognized as a multi award-winning novel. In just 24 months, she has won 1st place with both the NYC Big Book Awards, and the Firebird Books Awards, 2 Silver Awards with the American Writers Association and was chosen as a runner-up with the PenCraft Awards in Women’s Fiction. Her second novel, The Making of Genevieve, was published in February 2024. She has written essays for Women’s Writers, Women’s Books Magazine, and finds joy in meeting her readers at her Beyond the Book events, where she shares her inspiring story of entering the publishing world with no background and ultimately achieving recognition as an award-winning writer. Judy has been a year-round resident of Cape Cod. She says the ocean inspires her creativity and is a reoccurring theme in her novels. She has been recognized as a genius at understanding human behavior and putting it on a page by the USA best-selling author, Barbara Conrey.

In Nine Days one phone call upends Sara Austin’s world. Out of town for a company conference, Sara she gets a call that her mother is in the hospital. As her reluctant Health Care Proxy, Sara relates, with humor and alcohol, how she and her siblings, each with plenty of baggage, maneuver the murky waters of dealing with an aging parent. In Nine Days by Judy Lannon, we learn to love and relate to Sara, a product of divorce, narcissism and alcoholism, as she works through a lifetime of self-doubt and unworthiness to emerge as a stronger, integrated woman.

In The Making of Genevieve, we learn the complexity that is Genevieve. We navigate the tumultuous road to her golden years, beginning as a teen on the picturesque shores of Newport, Rhode Island with her best friend, Nicky. Genevieve always strives for the best of everything-the perfect home, clothes, friends, and of course, the perfect man. For Genevieve, image is paramount. What happens when Genevieve's plans are challenged and the idyllic life she dreams of is placed in peril? Which leaves us to ask, "Does anyone really know their mother?"

Books will be for sale at the event, and Lannon will sign them after her presentation.

   7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Virtual: Q&A with Emily Falcon: Bostonian Heart Attack Survivor who Runs 5K

We will talk with author Emily Falcon about her new memoir, From the Sidelines to the Finish Line: A Chronic Illness Survivor’s Challenges and Everyday Triumphs which chronicles her lifelong journey with a congenital cardiac condition. In 1982, at seven weeks old, she had a heart attack that destroyed forty percent of the left side of her heart. This was her entry into a world of multiple cardiac procedures, surgeries, and hospitalizations, and a later diagnosis of glaucoma. Balancing these serious conditions defined her life.

Emily’s memoir is a story of survival and how her physical situation shaped and limited her. She never surrendered, never wavered. She always forged onward. She intends this story to be a helpful resource to families, caregivers, and physicians who want to gain insight into a patient’s point of view.

In 2017, after a lifetime of feeling that nothing could ever change, Emily had a second open-heart surgery. This procedure allowed her to participate in a 5K race a mere eight months later. She was no longer stuck on the sidelines. She encourages her readers to advocate for themselves, believe in their abilities, never be afraid to test their boundaries, and feel motivated to make changes in their lives.

Would you survive a zombie apocalypse? Join us to talk with New York Times bestselling author Max Brallier about The Last Kids on Earth, both the book series and the animated series on Netflix. In this virtual event, Max will share how he came up with the different monsters and villains as well as the unique ways that Jack and his friends figure out to defeat them.

Ever since the monster apocalypse hit town, average thirteen year old Jack Sullivan has been living in his tree house, which he’s armed to the teeth with catapults and a moat, not to mention video games and an endless supply of Oreos and Mountain Dew scavenged from abandoned stores. But Jack alone is no match for the hordes of Zombies and Winged Wretches and Vine Thingies, and especially not for the eerily intelligent monster known only as Blarg. So Jack builds a team: his dorky best friend, Quint; the reformed middle school bully, Dirk; Jack’s loyal pet monster, Rover; and Jack’s crush, June. With their help, Jack is going to slay Blarg, achieve the ultimate Feat of Apocalyptic Success, and be average no longer! Can he do it?

   2:00 PM Teen Watch Party with Elizabeth Acevedo & Black Out Poetry

Grades 9-12 are welcome to our Watch Party. We'll watch Elizabeth on the big screen and complete Black Out Poetry of our own!

You’re invited to learn about the power of poetry with Elizabeth Acevedo! In this exciting author conversation and Q&A, Acevedo will provide a short reading from her National Book Award winning and New York Times bestselling novel-in-verse, The Poet X serving as the backdrop to this amazing chat!

The Poet X is about an Afro-Latina heroine who tells her story with blazing words and powerful truth. Xiomara Batista feels unheard and unable to hide in her Harlem neighborhood. Ever since her body grew into curves, she has learned to let her fists and her fierceness do the talking. But Xiomara has plenty she wants to say, and she pours all her frustration and passion onto the pages of a leather notebook, reciting the words to herself like prayers—especially after she catches feelings for a boy in her bio class named Aman, who her family can never know about.

With Mami’s determination to force her daughter to obey the laws of the church, Xiomara understands that her thoughts are best kept to herself. So when she is invited to join her school’s slam poetry club, she doesn’t know how she could ever attend without her mami finding out. But she still can’t stop thinking about performing her poems. Because in the face of a world that may not want to hear her, Xiomara refuses to be silent.

A virtual author talk you don’t want to miss–come create out loud with Elizabeth Acevedo! Register now!

His winning book, A First Time for Everything, is a graphic memoir based on his own awkward middle school years and the trip to Europe that changed his life.

Dan Santat began drawing as a young boy and although he first studied microbiology, he pursued his passion in illustration. He spent many hours as a child and teenager teaching himself to draw by copying illustrations from comic books until he developed the unique, recognizable style that we see today. His talk will inspire listeners to draw their own story as well as give them practical tips on the creation of graphic novels.

About the Author

Dan Santat is a Caldecott Medal winner, a National Book Award winner, and a New York Times bestselling author and illustrator. His artwork is also featured in numerous picture books, chapter books, and middle-grade novels. Santat created the animated television show, "The Replacements," as well. He lives in Southern California with his wife and two children.
