When money is extremely tight, when experiencing a critical budget gap while demands on your services are higher than ever, or when launching an ambitious new program area, we often think: “Why not get a grant?”  This webinar explores the ins and outs of seeking grants today, providing some very specific advice on how to be successful at securing funding from foundations and corporations.  Topics covered include:  the various types of grants, what kinds of grants in which dollar amounts work best for different types of funders, and alternatives to cash grants.  Determining where grants fit in your overall funding scheme, and what to do when you actually receive a grant are also addressed.

Please note that this is a virtual program and you must register to receive a link to the Zoom.

Celebrate Earth Day with Us and Learn How to Build Your Own Rain Harvesting System

As a way to recognize and celebrate Earth Day and increase awareness around plastic waste and water conservation, come join us for a virtual program to learn how to create a rainwater harvesting system for your community.

High school student Madeline Abrams has developed an environmentally friendly and economically accessible way to capture rainwater using otherwise discarded plastic water bottles to create an irrigation system for vegetable gardens, farms and landscapes.

By using empty water bottles, cutting them in half lengthwise, and connecting them with waterproof tape (or other available resources), Madeline has created a gutter system to capture the rainfall that comes off of a roof. She then uses plastic bottles to create a downspout to direct the water to a holding tank similar to a rain barrel. Here is a link to the website she created, Harvest Every Drop, to share her invention: http://harvesteverydrop.com

Madeline recently presented her rainwater harvesting system virtually to 45 communities in New York, California, Uganda, Namibia, Lesotho, Angola and South Africa. Her invention is being shared with villages and communities as a way to conserve water and address the issue of upcycling plastic waste that has become a major problem in many parts of the world. An article about Madeline’s system was published earlier this month in an international Rotary magazine covering Uganda.

After the Zoom presentation, Madeline will share the instructional video she created as a reference to build her watering system to help communities harvest every drop.

5:00 PM  -  6:00 PM Marcia Zug Author Talk
    Contact: Raven Dillon   8604471411   rdillon@plnl.org

Why do people get married? Marcia Zug strives to answer that question in her book, You'll Do: A History of Marrying for Reasons Other than Love, where she documents the myriad of reasons people seize power and autonomy through maritial institutions, especially in the face of extreme prejudice.

Laws have been designed to encourage people to marry so that certain societal benefits could be achieved: the population would increase, women would have financial security, children would be cared for, and immigrants would have familial connections. As late as the Great Depression, poor young women were encouraged to marry aged Civil War veterans for lifetime pensions.

The widely overlooked problem with this tradition is that individuals and society have relied on marriage to address or dismiss a range of injustices and inequities, from gender- and race-based discrimination, sexual violence, and predation to unequal financial treatment. Through revealing storytelling, Zug builds a compelling case that when marriage is touted as “the solution” to such problems, it absolves the government, and society, of the responsibility for directly addressing them.

Marcia Zug is a family law professor at the University of South Carolina School of Law. She is a graduate of Dartmouth College and The Yale Law School. Her previous book, Buying A Bride, explored the history of mail order marriage in the United States. She lives in Columbia, SC with her husband and two daughters.
