The public is welcome to attend the Friends of the Poughkeepsie Public Library District's Annual Meeting, starting at 6 pm, with light refreshments to follow.  The guest speaker Andrew Coe will take the podium at 7 pm.

Author Andrew Coe co-wrote the book 'A Square Meal: A Culinary History of the Great Depression' with his wife Jane Ziegelman. The book traces America's culinary history from the 1930s to the present.

The Great Depression certainly crushed America’s economy and destroyed lives. But its societal wreckage also included the decimation of something far more basic. The habit of a regular meal, or any meal, died for many. 'A Square Meal' details how the FDR food programs did more than relieve hunger. At the behest of Eleanor Roosevelt, the initiative incorporated nutritional requirements and spawned the advent of corporate food production – the foundation of today’s food economy and expectations of health from diet.

Geoff Ward was the writer for ‘The Vietnam War’, the new film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. In a conversation with Paul Sparrow, Director of the FDR Presidential Library, Geoff  will talk about the making of the film and his collaboration with Ken Burns. The principal writer of the television mini-series ‘The Civil War’ (1990), Ward has collaborated with co-producer Ken Burns on most of the documentaries he has made since.  The 2011 Burns/Ward collaboration, ‘Prohibition’, brought Ward his seventh Emmy for Outstanding Writing for Nonfiction Programming. Since that project, he worked with Ken Burns on ‘The Roosevelts: An Intimate History’, a seven-part documentary miniseries which was broadcast on PBS in September 2014.

Set almost entirely in a Chinese restaurant, Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas is an offbeat, irreverent musical documentary that tells the story of a group of Jewish songwriters, including Irving Berlin, Mel Tormé, Jay Livingston, Ray Evans, Gloria Shayne Baker and Johnny Marks, who wrote the soundtrack to Christianity’s most musical holiday. It’s an amazing tale of immigrant outsiders who became irreplaceable players in pop culture’s mainstream - a generation of songwriters who found in Christmas the perfect holiday in which to imagine a better world, and for at least one day a year, make us believe in it.  52 minutes

Book:  My Favorite Thing is Monsters. Book One by Emil Ferris.  Set against the tumultuous political backdrop of late ’60s Chicago, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is the fictional graphic diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes, filled with B-movie horror and pulp monster magazines iconography. Karen Reyes tries to solve the murder of her enigmatic upstairs neighbor, Anka Silverberg, a holocaust survivor, while the interconnected stories of those around her unfold. When Karen’s investigation takes us back to Anka’s life in Nazi Germany, the reader discovers how the personal, the political, the past, and the present converge. Full-color illustrations throughout.

Book:  My Absolute Darling by Gabriel Tallent.  Gabriel Tallent writes with bravura more experienced authors can only envy. His debut story, stars 14 year-old Julia, called Turtle, lives with her paranoid, survivalist father in the wilds of Mendocino County. Their ruin of a house has boarded-up windows and “spindled wooden railings overgrown with climbing roses and poison oak.” If Turtle is that rose, then her father is the poison oak: his touch (and he touches Turtle) leads to trouble. But he’s taught his daughter to shoot and forage -- she can “decipher” the woods, even at night -- and those skills serve her well when she finally starts to free herself from his control.

We meet at Juan Murphy's Irish Pub and Mexican Grub 796 Main Street Poughkeepsie (Formerly The Dubliner).

In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated. Rated PG-13.  2 hours.

Book:  Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.  In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.  *Being adapted to a film in 2018 by Steven Spielberg
