    Contact: Rich Stein   (845) 454-1703   barrettd@nyassembly.gov

As the Hudson Valley -- and other parts of NY State -- continue to grapple with an epidemic of Lyme and tick-borne diseases, Assemblymember Didi Barrett (D – Columbia, Dutchess) will hold a public forum designed to raise awareness and educate the community about ticks and their infections, as well as engage the public to boost advocacy efforts.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, from 2000 through 2014, Dutchess and Columbia County had the highest incidences of Lyme disease per capita in New York State.

To help spread the message, Assemblymember Barrett is holding public forums at libraries across the 106th Assembly district, and has formed an advisory board consisting of experts from both the environmental and medical fields. Among the advisory board members are: advocates Jill and Ira Auerbach; Dr. Richard Horowitz, a Lyme specialist from the Hudson Valley Healing Arts Center; Public Health Advisor Allison Kaufman from the Dutchess County Department of Health; Dr. Felicia Keesing, a biologist and tick specialist at Bard College; Dr. Kenneth Liegner, who has been combating Lyme Disease for a quarter century; Dr. Richard Ostfeld of the Cary Institute; Mary Beth Pfeiffer, author of 'Lyme: The First Epidemic of Climate Change’; and Dr. Ananthakrishnan Ramani, an infectious disease specialist from Columbia Memorial Hospital in Columbia County.

Dr. Richard Horowitz, a local but world-renowed Lyme-literate doctor, will give a presentation on Lyme and Tick-borne diseases

For more information, please contact Assemblymember Barrett’s Poughkeepsie district office at (845) 454-1703 or email barrettd@nyassembly.gov.

"DANITA E. MATTHEWS is a mother, entrepreneur, and active Girl Scout leader. An avid writer, she was inspired to chronicle the events of her daughter's life into this easy-reader in hopes of encouraging parent-child reading.
As a volunteer with Literacy Connections (Dutchess County, NY), she dedicated hours of her free time to helping grade school children enhance their reading skills."

When space shuttle astronaut Sally Ride landed after becoming the first American woman in space, NASA officials tried to present her with a bright red bouquet of roses during an elaborately choreographed homecoming ceremony at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. But Ride turned her back on the flowers, and went on to explain to the gathered reporters that she wanted to be treated no different from her male crewmates. “I’m just one of the guys,” she explained. This talk by Neil Maher explores not only the history of Ride’s historic flight, but also the important role played by the feminist movement during the 1960s and 1970s in pressuring NASA to admit women to its previously all-male astronaut corps. Just as women had marched, protested, and lobbied the halls of Congress during the 1910s for the right to vote, feminists during the 1960s era also took to the streets to demand equality for women in space.  This lecutre is made possible by Humanities New York.

Imagine that women have the right to choose all political representatives, removing from office anyone who doesn’t make wise decisions for the future. Living in a world free from violence against them, women will not allow a man to hold office if he has violated a woman. Economically independent, they have the final say in matters of war and peace and the absolute right to their own bodies.  This is not a dream. Haudenosaunee (traditional Iroquois) women have had this authority — and more — since long before Christopher Columbus came to these shores.  This lecture is provided by Sally Roesch Wagner, Professor, Syracuse University; Director, Matilda Joslyn Gage Center for Social Justice Dialogue.  This lecutre is made possible by Humanities New York.

Book:  Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.  In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.  *Being adapted to a film in 2018 by Steven Spielberg

Cole, Jay, Kai, Lloyd, Nya and Zane are six Lego teens who have extraordinary skills. They are all gifted ninjas, and they spend their nights defending their island of Ninjago against a host of enemy invaders. During the day, however, they lead a much different life. Despite their heroic actions, they must go to school like ordinary teenagers, and in a lot of ways, this causes them more stress than the epic battles they undertake at night. How long will they be able to maintain a healthy balance between their superhero-style defenses and the more ordinary task of high school? No registration required.

Price (non-refundable):
Adult 19+ years: $55.00 each
Children up to 18 years old: $45.00 each

Tickets can be purchased online (credit card) or in-person at the Friends’ Book Store (open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday 10 AM – 4 PM). The Book Store accepts check, cash, or credit card (MC, Visa, or Discover).

Metro North will not honor the group fare if you do not travel with the group.

Proposal writing is the single skill most sought- after by savvy nonprofit managers.  On the one hand writing a grant proposal is quite simple and follows a basic formula.  On the other hand, this may be your only chance to put the case for funding your organization in front of a foundation.  So you want to be sure to do it right.  This basic introduction provides invaluable tips on what your proposal narrative and budget should include, how to let your funder take the lead, and the best advice on writing and submission techniques.

David Grann discusses his newest book, Killers of the Flower Moon, about the Osage Indians, who, in the 1920s, became the wealthiest people in the world because of oil under their land in Oklahoma. They were then serially murdered off in one of the most sinister crimes in American history. The case became among the FBI’s first major homicide investigations. The FBI sent in a team of undercover agents, including one of the only Native Americans in the bureau. They eventually caught one of the masterminds. But, as Grann documents, there was deeper and darker conspiracy that the bureau never exposed.
