Local History Talk: Portsmouth Cemeteries

Tuesday October 24 | 7 – 8:30 PM

This library’s Local History series features authors and experts on local history topics. The series continues with Glenn A. Knoblock, author of Portsmouth Cemeteries (2005).

Rubbings, photographs, and slides illustrate the rich variety of gravestones to be found in our own neighborhoods, but they also tell long-forgotten stories of such historical events as the Great Awakening, the Throat Distemper epidemic, and the American Revolution. Find out more about these deeply personal works of art and the craftsmen who carved them, and learn how to read the stone "pages" that give insight into the vast genealogical book of New Hampshire.

Glenn Knoblock is an independent scholar and author of fifteen books and over 100 articles. He is also the author and historian on projects relating to Northern New England bridges, New Hampshire cemeteries, and brewing history, and African-American military history. Knoblock has served as the main military contributor to Harvard and Oxford University's landmark African-American Biography Project. He holds a BA in History from Bowling Green State University.

Wednesday October 25 - The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle & The Horror at Red Hook by H.P. Lovecraft

LaValle cleverly retcons H.P. Lovecraft’s infamous story “The Horror at Red Hook,” retelling it with a new protagonist (the titular Charles Thomas Tester, a splendidly Lovecraftian name) and a literary veneer that recalls Chester Himes. Tester, a con artist in 1924 Harlem with a minor awareness of the occult, occasionally masquerades as a street musician, playing the guitar (poorly) while pulling his hustles. When he’s approached by the eccentric Robert Suydam to play at a party, he knows something’s awry, but the money’s too good to pass up.

Monday November 13 - Turn of Mind by Alice LaPlante

LaPlante’s literary novel explores uncharted territory, imagining herself into a mind, one slipping, fading, spinning away from her protagonist, a woman who may have murdered her best friend. Dr. Jennifer White lives in the dark, shadowy forest of forgetfulness.

Sunday November 19 | 2 - 4 PM | Hilton Garden Inn Room

Ever wonder about publishing your family genealogy research? How to turn your work into something useful for future generations? Have you gathered large amounts of documentation? Have you gathered the right stuff? What else do you need to think about before publishing? Using today’s tools and technologies, this presentation will examine the procedures to turn your family history into a published book. Linda Roghaar from GENEALOGY HOUSE Publishers in Amherst MA will present a talk similar to the one delivered at the 2017 New England Regional Genealogical Conference.

The Portsmouth Public Library is pleased to announce its Fall 2017 Genealogy Workshop offerings! Presented by the library’s Special Collections staff and members of the Ranger Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), these events are free, open to the public, and appropriate for all levels of interest and experience. Tuesday November 21 - Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell

There is a logic behind why some people become successful, and it has more to do with legacy and opportunity than high IQ. In his latest book, New Yorker contributor Gladwell casts his inquisitive eye on those who have risen meteorically to the top of their fields, analyzing developmental patterns and searching for a common thread. The author asserts that there is no such thing as a self-made man, that “the true origins of high achievement” lie instead in the circumstances and influences of one’s upbringing, combined with excellent timing.

Wednesday November 29 - A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle

An allegorical fantasy in which a group of young people are guided through the universe by Mrs. Who, Mrs. Which and Mrs. What -- women who possess supernatural powers. They traverse fictitious regions, meet and face evil and demonstrate courage at the right moment. Religious allusions are secondary to the philosophical struggle designed to yield the meaning of life and one's place on earth. Young Meg's willingness to face IT in the form of a black beast in order to save a dear friend is one sign of her growing awareness.

If you plan on attending and would like to vote on the week's possible topics, send our Director an email at skbutzel@cityofportsmouth, and he will send you a link to the webpage where you can vote. The list of topics is posted each Wednesday afternoon and voting concludes that Friday afternoon. At that point, the Director will send out an email to the group letting them know the two selected topics, and a list of links to suggested articles.

Where do we get our possible topics and a set of suggested articles from each week? From the World Affairs Council of America's Weekly World News Update webpage.

White Like Me: Race, Racism & White Privilege in America
Sunday December 17 | 2 – 4:30 PM
White Like Me, based on the work of acclaimed anti-racist educator and author Tim Wise, explores race and racism in the U.S. through the lens of whiteness and white privilege. In a stunning reassessment of the American ideal of meritocracy and claims that we've entered a post-racial society, Wise offers a fascinating look back at the race-based white entitlement programs that built the American middle class, and argues that our failure as a society to come to terms with this legacy of white privilege continues to perpetuate racial inequality and race-driven political resentments today.

Discussion facilitated by Sarah Andrews, SURJ.

Tuesday December 19 - To the End of June: The Intimate Life of American Foster Care by Cris Beam

Journalist Beam examines what is needed to improve the way we care for troubled families and children. In 2001, as a high school teacher, the author was able to provide a home for her 17-year-old transgender student. Prompted by this experience, she went on to spend five years exploring the contradictions within the child welfare system, seeking to find out why the 500,000 kids in American foster care were “twice as likely to develop Posttraumatic Stress Disorder" as combat veterans.
