Four-Week Watercolor Class

(No class on Monday July 3)

This free watercolor class is offered as part of our Summer Art at the Library series. Space is limited and registration is required. Please call 766-1720 or visit the reference desk to register.

Watercolor is one of the most pleasurable and satisfying media employed by both beginning and experienced artists. The soft transparent colors and textures lend themselves to a variety of subjects and techniques, and yield paintings that reflect the unique spontaneity and creativity of each individual artist.

In this class you will explore techniques such as planning out your painting with an initial sketch, painting wet into wet, building a ground color, and how to use a sponge to create texture and even remove paint.

About the Instructor: Emily Kalina is an accomplished artist who is currently inspired by the natural beauty of the New England Seacoast. In 2009, Kalina left the gallery world in which she exhibited and sold her signature style of layered, textured and patterned watercolors to pursue the exciting world of print and textile design. Using her watercolors as a basis for her prints, she combines her sharp eye for trends with an innate sense of color and style to produce vibrant designs that are appealing to a wide variety of clientele. There are numerous stores where you can find her prints, postcards, greeting cards, and more.

A list of suggested materials is available upon registration.

You must register to attend this course. Space is limited. Please call 766-1720 or visit the Reference Desk to register.

Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean
Tuesday June 27 | 7 PM

Levenson Community Room

FREE. Books available for purchase!

After nearly losing his 65’ wooden schooner in a large Alaskan tide, writer, sailor, and surfer Jonathan White vowed to understand the tide. He knew the moon had something to do with it, but what exactly? He read a book, then two. Ten years later, he had read three hundred books and criss-crossed the seven seas to see the largest, fastest, scariest, and most amazing tides in the world. With photographs, stories, and short readings, Jonathan takes his audiences on an enthralling journey into the surprising and poetic workings of the tide.

Jonathan White is the author of Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean (Trinity University Press). jonathanwhitewriter.com

June 28 – Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson

In California of the near future, when the U.S. is only a ``Burbclave'' (city-state), the Mafia is just another franchise chain (CosaNostrastet Pizza, Incorporated) and there are no laws to speak of, Hiro Protagonist follows clues from the Bible, ancient Sumer and high technology to help thwart an attempt to take control of civilization--such as it is.

Photographs and Essays from Brain Injury Survivors

Portsmouth Public Library  June 29 – July 30

Reception: Wednesday July 19, 3 – 5 PM

For brain injury survivors, sharing their experience is one of the best ways for them to feel positive about their recovery. Educating the greater community about the impact builds a sense of purpose in their lives. Often known as the silent epidemic, brain injury effects can be invisible to many.

PhotoVoice, an exhibit by Krempels Center, is a visual documentation of the lives of survivors, and their voices, in text, to go along with it. As you look at the photographs and read the text, you will see that a collective voice emerges from the exhibit, one that describes not only sadness and frustration, but also strength, joy, friendship & community.

Krempels Center provides an innovative community program for brain injury survivors. Services focus on improving the quality of life by building a sense of well-being and belonging, as well as greater community re-integration. Krempels Center provides opportunity for cognitive development, community connection, emotional support, physical activity, and vocational and/or leisure pursuit…in summary, helping people to build new lives.

Four-Week Watercolor Class
Mondays | 7 – 8:30 PM

July 18 – My Life in France by Julia Child

With Julia Child's death in 2004 at age 91, her grandnephew Prud'homme completed this playful memoir of the famous chef's first, formative sojourn in France with her new husband, Paul Child, in 1949. The couple met during WWII in Ceylon, working for the OSS, and soon after moved to Paris, where Paul worked for the U.S. Information Service. Child describes herself as a "rather loud and unserious Californian," 36, six-foot-two and without a word of French, while Paul was 10 years older, an urbane, well-traveled Bostonian. Startled to find the French amenable and the food delicious, Child enrolled at the Cordon Bleu…

June 26, July 10, July 17, July 24

They use their newfound powers to raise their social status, but the emotional stresses of magic and adolescence test their friendships to the breaking point. In 2009, Meche returns to Mexico City for the funeral of her father, a radio deejay and washout performer who fed her love of music, and confronts her estranged friends, reopening old wounds.

Got your DNA test results back? Now What!? with Jennifer Shoer

Thursday August 17 | 6-8 PM | Levenson Room

We once again welcome local genealogist Jennifer Shoer, aka The Scrappy Genealogist! Jennifer will help us unravel and understand the meaning and use of those DNA results we are all getting. Haplogroups, oh my! Have you tested at Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), 23andMe, or AncestryDNA? Are you wondering what your data show and what you should be doing next? What does it mean when I have a DNA match? Should I be concerned about sharing requests?

Jennifer is the Managing Genealogist of Reconnecting Relatives, LLC. Find her online at scrappygenealogist.com or reconnectingrelatives.com.
