Radical Self-Love & Artistic Integrity
with Rae Senarighi, Artist
Thursday April 26 | 7 PM

Join us at PPL on Thursday, April 26 at 7 PM for a moving talk with artist Rae Senarighi, titled Radical Self-Love and Artistic Integrity

Facing one’s own mortality has a way of bringing things into sharp focus. While going through cancer treatment in 2015, Rae Senarighi rededicated his life to art, and decided to never again send hate to his body. Now through his art Rae hopes to help audiences across the spectrum come to self-love and wholeness without going through the trauma of a life threatening experience.

Fine artist, designer, and muralist, Rae Senarighi is best known for vivid colorful abstracts, intricate typography, and bold transfixing portraits of modern icons. Rae is a transgender non-binary artist currently living and working in Portland, Oregon. In his upcoming solo show, TRANSCEND, at 3S Artspace, he masterfully captures the brightness in twelve transgender culture-makers:

COMBATANTS FOR PEACE
Thursday May 3
6:30 – 8:30 PM
Portsmouth Public Library

Only by joining forces, will we be able to end the cycle of violence. Join us for an evening with two members of Combatants For Peace: listen to their stories, watch clips from their award winning documentary “Disturbing the Peace” and ask questions.

In 2006, Israeli and Palestinian former combatants, people who had taken an active role in the conflict, laid down their weapons and established Combatants for Peace. The egalitarian, bi-national, grassroots organiza-tion was founded on the belief that the cycle of violence can only be broken when Israelis and Palestinians join forces. Committed to joint nonviolence since its foundation, CFP works to both transform and resolve the conflict by ending Israeli occupation and all forms of violence between the two sides and building a peaceful future for both peoples

Pastel Workshop

Saturday May 5
10 AM – 4 PM

This free pastel workshop is offered as part of the Pastel Society of New Hampshire (PSNH) Outreach Program with the Portsmouth Public Library. This class is open to Portsmouth Public Library cardholders only. Registration is required. Please call 766-1720 or visit the reference desk to register.

The pastel medium has seen a major renaissance in the last 20 years and has become one of the most popular and satisfying medium used by both beginning and experienced artists. It is a versatile medium that lends itself to painting a variety of subjects with brilliance and immediacy.

This workshop will start with an introduction to materials. You will then learn the process of building a pastel painting from start to finish using a sanded surface for your first “dry” painting. Your second assignment will be to create a “wet” under-painting using hard pastels and rubbing alcohol as the base for your second painting. The focus will be on drawing an outline, choosing color and gradually building pastel layers until the painting is completed.

About the Instructor: Born and raised in Normandy, France, Joelle is mostly a self-taught painter who started painting in watercolor over 25 years ago. Over time she added pastels and oils, which have become her two media of choice for plein air and studio painting. Each medium provides her a different opportunity to capture a subject and moment. Natural elements, plants, fruits and simple daily life vignettes as well as landscapes and buildings of her native France and New England home inspire her. Light, alignment, vibrant color and simplicity catch her eye. Joelle’s work is shown at the Yarmouth Gallery in Yarmouth, Maine, The Fruitlands Museum Store in Harvard, MA, the Sitka Gallery in Fitchburg, MA and the NOA Gallery in Groton, Mass. She is a member of the Pastel Society of New Hampshire, Pastel Society of Maine and Pastel Society of Connecticut. She teaches pastel classes at the Fruitlands Museum and the HUCC facility in Harvard, MA. Contact information: joellefeldman.com

Sundays, 3 PM

This spring, the Portsmouth Public Library and PMAC (Portsmouth Music and Arts Center), in association with the Boston Classical Guitar Society, will continue their series of live guitar performances called Guitar Sundays. These free concerts will be held at 3 PM on the first Sunday of the month, alternating locations between the Levenson Room at the Portsmouth Public Library and the Haas Family Gallery and Recital Hall at PMAC.

Drawing from a rich selection of guitar talent from both New Hampshire and the greater Boston area, the series of recitals will highlight the versatility and range of the guitar from classical to jazz to acoustic.

The Hampton Trio, Classical Guitar, Mandolin and Mandola.

The Hampton Trio performs original music and arrangements for ensemble of mandolin, mandola, and classical guitar. Inspired by the groundbreaking work of groups such as Trio Nuovo (Japan) and Trio Chamorro (Spain), the Hampton Trio’s goal is to popularize and add to the existing repertoire for this instrumentation.  In addition to their trio repertoire, the group’s programs often include classical guitar duos by Mark and Beverly Davis, and mandolin solos by Robert A. Margo. The members of the Trio also perform  in the New American Mandolin Ensemble and have appeared in plucked string music festivals in Spain, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands and the USA. 9th Annual Clothing Swap

Saturday May 12 | 10 AM to 2 PM

Connie Bean Center

155 Parrott Avenue (Next to the Library)

Goodwill Industries of Northern New England and the Portsmouth Public Library are proud to host the 9th Annual Clothing Swap on Saturday, May 12, from 10 AM to 2 PM.

This year, the SWAP will be held across the parking lot in the gym at the Connie Bean Center!

Participants are asked to bring a bag of gently used, clean clothing, shoes, and accessories, and leave with a bag of “new-to-you” items. In the spirit of giving, participants are asked to give more than they get. Remaining clothing and accessories will be donated to Goodwill.

The swap is a fun, social event helping people see fashion as an opportunity to give back to society. Donating unwanted clothing saves it from landfills, and a donation becomes an exciting addition to another’s wardrobe.

The swap benefits Goodwill Industries of Northern New England, whose retail stores help to keep usable goods out of the landfill. Last year, more than 300 people participated in the swap, donating over 1,800 pounds of clothing. The sales of all un-swapped donations help fund Goodwill programs in the Seacoast area and throughout New Hampshire.

Goodwill Industries of Northern New England enables individuals with diverse challenges to achieve personal stability and community engagement. A social enterprise for over 100 years, Goodwill reflects the integration of economic, social and environmental sustainability, with a focus on connecting people to marketplace employment. Services are funded by revenue from retail and recycling operations, grants, fees, and philanthropic investments and gifts.

May 15 - Being Mortal by Atul Gawande
Bestselling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending. Gawande, a practicing surgeon, addresses his profession's ultimate limitation, arguing that quality of life is the desired goal for patients and families. Gawande offers examples of freer, more socially fulfilling models for assisting the infirm and dependent elderly, and he explores the varieties of hospice care to demonstrate that a person's last weeks or months may be rich and dignified.

March – May

You’ve made a good life. Now plan for a good death! In cooperation with Hospice Help Foundation, a nonprofit providing financial assistance to hospice patients, and the Portsmouth Regional Hospital, the Portsmouth Public Library will host a workshop series titled A Good Life, A Good Death in March, April and May. One Wednesday per month, at 6:30 PM, these programs will help people talk more openly about dying, death and bereavement, and lay the groundwork for a good death.

Part 3: The Art of Life Stories
Wednesday May 16, 6:30 – 8 PM
Presented by Cynthia Tokos

Cynthia creates stories around the beauty of everyday people for non-profits, businesses and individuals. Her work reflects the dignity and strength of ‘heroes’ (read: ‘ordinary people’) who regularly save the day. In this hands on workshop, Cynthia will help you capture the essence of your Life Story - the gifts you bring to this world. Participants will leave with a letter, both written and using art materials if they choose, which they can gift to themselves or another as part of their legacy.

Genealogy Workshop
Using Deeds in Genealogy: A Goldmine of Information

Sunday, May 20 | 2 – 4 PM | Hilton Garden Inn Room

Often overlooked, deeds and land records can provide useful clues to finding and learning about our ancestors. This is especially true for areas where Probate Records have been destroyed. Deeds can help you find ancestors who have escaped the census taker and can provide information on family relationships, migration patterns, wealth, neighbors and more. Learn how to find them, how to read them, and how to use them to solve genealogy problems.

Dr. Carol P. McCoy, President of Find-Your-Roots in Brunswick, Maine and president of the Maine Genealogical Society, has been tracing her family history for over 30 years and helping others find their roots since 2000.  She specializes in New England, New York and West Virginia, and focuses on helping people learn the details and stories about their ancestors' lives.  She has used local records such as deeds, town records, and tax records to solve many genealogical problems.

DON'T MISS! BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!

Local History Talk: Portsmouth Naval Prison
with author Katy Kramer

Monday May 21 | 6 – 8:00 PM

The library’s Local History series features authors and experts on local history topics. The series continued in March with Katy Kramer, author of Portsmouth Naval Prison (2016). The event was so popular that she's coming back for another talk!

Sometimes referred to as “The Castle” or “The Rock” for its unique architecture, the former Portsmouth Naval Prison on Seavey Island has long fascinated residents and visitors.

Kramer’s book followed a decade of research. Her presentation uses archival photographs from museums, libraries and military facilities up and down the East Coast. She will show many rarely seen photographs, recount the actual history, dispel myths, and answer any of the lingering questions that continue to swirl around this iconic building. From its opening in 1908 to its closing in 1974, more than 86,000 men passed through the prison. Today it is vacant, but has a rich and storied history, including its history of prison reform.

Kramer became interested in the prison while living on the New Hampshire Seacoast. After a long career in public education and armed with a newly acquired master’s in journalism, she began what turned out to be an extensive search for information.

Citizens of Portsmouth are invited to attend a meeting at the Portsmouth Public Library to introduce the concept of a “Village”.  Begun fifteen years ago in Boston, the Village movement has spread across the country.  Today, there are over 200 active villages and nearly 150 more in development.   A “village” is a membership organization, run by its members that actively supports the concept of “aging in place” - offering activities, services and resources that make that possible and appealing.

June 19 - America Walks Into A Bar by Christine Sismondo
Christine Sismondo recounts the rich and fascinating history of an institution often reviled, yet always central to American life. She traces the tavern from England to New England, showing how even the Puritans valued "a good Beere." With fast-paced narration and lively characters, she carries the story through the twentieth century and beyond, from repeated struggles over licensing and Sunday liquor sales, from the Whiskey Rebellion to the temperance movement, from attempts to ban "treating" to Prohibition and repeal.

June 26 - Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor
Okorafor (The Shadow Speaker) returns with another successful tale of African magic. Although 12-year-old Sunny is Nigerian, she was born in America, and her Nigerian classmates see her as an outsider. Worse, she's an albino, an obvious target for bullies and suspected of being a ghost or a witch. Things change, however, when she has a vision of impending nuclear war. Then her classmate Orlu and his friend Chichi turn out to be Leopard People—witches—and insist that she is, too.

July 17 - Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance
In this compelling hybrid of memoir and sociological analysis, Vance digs deep into his upbringing in the hills of Jackson, Ky., and the suburban enclave of Middletown, Ohio. He chronicles with affection—and raw candor—the foibles, shortcomings, and virtues of his family and their own attempts to live their lives as working-class people in a middle-class world.

August 13 - Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri
The gulf that separates expatriate Bengali parents from their American-raised children—and that separates the children from India remains Lahiri's subject for this follow-up to Interpreter of Maladies and The Namesake… Lahiri's stories of exile, identity, disappointment and maturation evince a spare and subtle mastery that has few contemporary equals.

August 21 – Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari
Writing with wit and verve, Harari, professor of history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, attempts to explain how Homo sapiens came to be the dominant species on Earth as well as the sole representative of the human genus. He notes that from roughly two million years ago until about 10,000 years ago, we were not the only humans on the planet; many species preceded us, and some overlapped our tenure. Harari argues persuasively that three revolutions explain our current situation.
