On the best days parenting is a challenge we accept openly.  On other days the challenge can seem scary or overwhelming.  Throughout the development of our children manyquestions arise around what is typical versus what is of concern.  These questions are increasingly complicated when the concerns are related to behavioral or mental health difficulties.  There are many unknowns when supporting a child with a mental illness.

To help provide clarity and guidance the Scituate Public Schools is offering a series of informational and supportive group meetings for caregivers of students in grades 6-12.  Each month the group will meet to receive updated information on relevant topics such as medication, impact on daily living, discipline, and other key points.  The group will also have time to come together to ask questions, provide feedback, and mostimportantly give and receive support from other caregivers.

2:00 PM  -  3:30 PM Meet the Author: Anne Tucker Roberts
    Contact: Susan Pope   781-545-8727   spope@ocln.org

Anne Tucker Roberts, a Scituate resident, will talk about her recently published book "Five Courageous Mothers, Raising Children with Down Syndrome." A former teacher of adolescents with developmental disabilities, Anne will talk about her experiences teaching these young people, and how she managed the interviews with the mothers that did not always go according to form.

In the book, Anne relates the powerful stories of 5 women who went against the advice of the medical profession, family and friends to raise their Down Syndrome children and demonstrate the true power of love and devotion. These heart warming stories leave the reader with new understandings of grit and love.

Anne Tucker Roberts is a gifted teacher and writer. For nearly two decades she taught adolescents with developmental disabilities. After 12 years in this position, Anne was recognized as a Master Teacher and awarded a "Golden Apple" for professional excellence. Anne left this rewarding career to care for elderly parents. During that time she began writing memoirs and completed two books. Her current book is the result of a new collaborative work between Anne and these remarkable mothers. Anne graduated from Boston College with a BA in Liberal Arts. She later earned a Master's in Education and a Master's in Special Education. She continues her work as a guardian to four women with developmental disabilities. She lives with her husband of 30 years in Scituate, MA.
