Presenter: Marea Gordett

Hidden within you are the stories you have always wanted to write— about family or personal experiences. This series of three, non-fiction writing workshops is open to all who wish to pursue their own personal narrative, regardless of their level of writing experience. Each person has a unique way to tell his or her story, and participants will have a chance to mine memories of their lives, drawing inspiration from memory exercises, free-writing, photographs, and metaphor journals. We will gently support each other’s growth in this endeavor to generate and share writing.

Open to adults 18+.

Those registering need to commit to all three workshops.

Presenter: Bob Herbst

Heroes All Around Us:

This class explores the fascinating history of destroyer escorts, the USS SLATER and the lives of three men who served in the United States Navy during World War II and who are tied in some way to these trim but deadly warships. The first is Frank Slater, killed in action at Guadalcanal and for whom the USS SLATER is named. The second, Leonard Roy Harmon, coming from different circumstances but finding himself serving alongside Frank Slater aboard the USS SAN FRANCISCO, also lost his life and would receive the posthumous distinction of being the first African American to have a ship named in his honor. Finally, the remarkable story of a destroyer escort, the USS SAMUEL B ROBERTS will be examined, highlighting the actions of Paul Henry Carr.

Note: USS Slater displays in both cases arranged by Shanna Hopson, Collections Manager
