Facilitated by Barbara Ungar

This will be a three-part workshop open to seasoned poetry writers (ages 18+). A prompt will be given before the first class, and at the end of each class for the following session. Consider the prompt as a spring-board to dive off from: if it inspires a poem you'd like to workshop, grand. If not, bring in any other poem you would like to work on.

Please include your email address when you register.  The facilitator will email an assignment to attendees before the first session.  For those without an email address, a copy of the assignment can be picked up at the Central Library's Reference Desk.

Barbara Ungar, a professor of English at The College of Saint Rose, has written books of poetry including "Charlotte Bronte, You Ruined My Life" and "Immortal Medusa."

This workshop was funded by The Friends of SCPL

The range of quilting experience in their membership varies from beginner to expert.

ln 2004 Q.U.l.L.T.S. became involved with the lnjured Soldiers Quilts Project. Quilts are part of a welcome packet that is given to veterans who are admitted for an overnight stay at the Albany Statton VA Medical Center. Q.U.I.L.T.S. passed out 332 quilts to hospitalized men and women veterans who have proudly served our country during peacetime or military conflict.

Authors Among Us

Facilitated by Paul Lamar

Robert Frost said, “Writing free verse is like playing tennis with the net down.” In this workshop the net will be up! Fixed forms are poems that are written in a prescribed fashion. We’re familiar with sonnets and Haiku. But have you heard of ghazals, triolets, villanelles, limericks, pantoums, and pleiades? We’ll explore some of these forms and compose our own pieces. Novice to seasoned writers are welcome. For those age 18 and up.

This program series is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Library System and participating member libraries. Participating libraries are accessible for people with disabilities.

Authors Among Us

Facilitated by Brian Phillip Whalen

This is an event that needed to be rescheduled.  Those who signed up for the original dates in July have all been contacted by email and phone and offered the chance to sign up for the new dates.  We are now opening registration again since there are a number of spots available.

We have the names of those who said they can make the new dates (Friday, October 6, 13, and 20. from 9:30-11:30 am.); those people do not have to register again.

Please sign up at the Friday, October 6 entry, or you can call 518.388.4511 to register.

In these sessions for novice or experienced writers, we’ll learn how prose poetry and flash fiction can be juxtaposed to understand these forms. Explore the characteristics and techniques of these genres by reading sample pieces and writing exercises when we meet and at home. For those age 18 and up

A lecturer at the University at Albany, Brian enjoys teaching about the writing techniques of fiction and poetry using an informal approach. His work is influenced by the short prose form and the musical quality of language.

October 25:

The Mummy

Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis
Universal Pictures; Directed by Alex Kurtzman; Rated PG-13; 110 minutes; 2017

An ancient princess is awakened from her crypt beneath the desert, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia, and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

This program is meant to provide relatable information about the Erie Canal from conception to construction and the various improvements to the waterway over the last two hundred years.  During this program, topics ranging from politics, economics and social factors to the environmental views in early America will be broached.  The presentation is intended to give an overall view of the deep rich history of the Erie Canal and its importance to not only New York State but America.
