7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Read 'n Greet Book Club

We are not your typical book club. We meet each month at a different downtown bar for drinks, food and intelligent discussion of contemporary literature. A great book club for all ages (21 + that is...)

Our June discussion will be of the graphic novel Two Brothers by Fabio Moon. Twin brothers Omar and Yaqub may share the same features, but they could not be more different from one another. And the possessive love of their mother, Zana, stirs the troubled waters between them even more. After a brutally violent exchange between the young boys, Yaqub, “the good son,” is sent from his home in Brazil to live with relatives in Lebanon, only to return five years later as a virtual stranger to the parents who bore him, his tensions with Omar unchanged. Family secrets engage the reader in this profoundly resonant story about identity, love, loss, deception, and the dissolution of blood ties.

Location of discussion: Pinhead Susans. New readers are welcome to join us by registering below!

June 28:   Paterson

Adam Driver, Golshifteh Farahani, Nellie, Rizwan Manji, Barry Shabaka Henley, Method Man, William Jackson Harper

Universal; Directed by Jim Jarmusch; Rated R; 119 minutes; 2016

Paterson is a bus driver in the city of Paterson, New Jersey - they share the name. Every day, Paterson adheres to a simple routine: he drives his daily route, observing the city as it drifts across his windshield and overhearing fragments of conversation swirling around him; he writes poetry into a notebook; he walks his dog; he stops in a bar and drinks exactly one beer. He goes home to his wife, Laura. By contrast, Laura's world is ever changing.

POSTPONED UNTIL THE FALL!!!!

This three-part series has been postponed until Monday, October 30, November 6, and November 13 from 6-7:30 pm due to an unanticipated scheduling conflict with the facilitator.  It will be held in the Swanker Room In October.  Those who signed up for this workshop will be notified about the cancellation, and their names will remain on the list for the October dates.

Facilitated by Brian Phillip Whalen

In these sessions for novice or experienced writers, we’ll learn how prose poetry and flash fiction can be juxtaposed to understand these forms. We’ll explore characteristics and techniques of these genres by reading sample pieces and writing exercises when we meet and at home.

For those age 18+.

A lecturer at the University at Albany, Brian enjoys teaching about the techniques of fiction and poetry writing using an informal approach. His creative and critical work is heavily influenced by the short prose form and the musical quality of language.

This program series is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Library System and participating member libraries.

Patchett’s most autobiographical novel, this is a funny, chilling, entrancing, and profoundly affecting look into one family’s “commonwealth,” its shared affinities, conflicts, loss, and love.  Spanning five decades, the book explores how a chance encounter at a baby's christening reverberates through the lives of four parents and six children.  When a legendary author uses the children's experiences as the basis for a successful novel, they are forced to come to terms with the deeply loyal connection they feel for one another.

This program series is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Library System and participating member libraries.
