    Contact: Desiree Smelcer   413-538-5045   dsmelcer@cwmars.org

This new biographical film tells the story of the legendary Secretary of Interior Stewart Udall, who served in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations and became a towering - yet humble - figure in the 20th century American conservation movement. He was an early campaigner for both environmental protection and social justice, encouraging JFK, LBJ and Ladybird Johnson to become conservation leaders themselves.

Through his bipartisan statesmanship, more lands and waters were protected as national parks, national wildlife refuges, and national seashores during his tenure as Interior Secretary than under any other leader in that position. Udall was directly responsible for the passage of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act and the establishment of a National Trails program. He was also one of the earliest leaders at the federal level to warn about the looming dangers of climate change.

Stewart Udall was a Renaissance man and authored numerous books on American history and public policy. He was also a poet who admired Robert Frost and played a key role in raising Frost’s public profile at the time.

Born and raised in Arizona, he had a deep respect for indigenous culture. Through his connection with the Navaho Tribe, he walked and talked "the beauty way" and we are all the better for it.

Kestrel Land Trust conserves and cares for forests, farms, and riverways in the Connecticut River Valley of Western Massachusetts, while nurturing an enduring love of the land.

Since its founding in 1970, Kestrel has conserved more than 27,000 acres of wildlands, woodlands, farmland, and riverlands in partnership with willing landowners, communities, the Commonwealth, and federal agencies

Virtual - Celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month with Romance Author Camilla Evergreen: "How to Find Love When You're Weird"

Monday, May 20, 2024

We are thrilled to be chatting with romance author Camilla Evergreen whose book "How to Find Love When You're Weird" makes it clear that people on the spectrum, (in fact, ALL people) are worthy of love and an HEA (happily ever after). In fact, we would posit, that it's the very neurodiverse characteristics that make someone even more attractive to the right person. We can't wait for this conversation and hope you can join us!

You can buy signed books (by bookplate) by Camilla from Aesop's Fable. Just write that you would like the book signed in the notes section at checkout.

About the book:

I am a perfectly functional adult.

So why is it so hard to get a date? When my father decided last year that I wouldn’t receive my inheritance until I am in a stable relationship, I let the ever-important deadline slip through the cracks.

Why bother dating, when I can read, right? Wrong.

Now, I have less than two months to find love if I’m going to inherit my cottage home, and even with a stack of self-help books a mile high, things are not looking good. The only man who’s graced me with more than five minutes of his attention is a giant tattooed bar owner.

Sure, he’s the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. And, sure, he keeps appearing in my life. And…sure…when we enter into a fake/practice dating collaboration, it seems an awful lot like the start of a rom-com, but there’s no way our little stint turns into anything else.

I absolutely refuse to date anyone who drinks. He may be the gentlest grump now, but I know what alcohol does to people, and I am not looking for someone I think I can trust to hurt me again.

No matter what, follow point #1 on my outline: Do NOT fall in love.

About Camilla:

Camilla Evergreen is an alias of USA Today bestselling author Anne Stryker. Originally intended as a dumping ground for all things lacking fantasy, Camilla/Anne came to the shocking discovery that writing sarcastic, chaotic romcoms full of quippy heroines and adoring heroes has a kick to it.

Camilla/Anne’s neurodivergent tendencies leave her hyperfocused on writing sweet and sassy romances from dawn till dusk and lending whatever her current creative obsessions are to her characters. From arranged marriages to falling for the boss, there’s lots of love to go around.

This class is for those interested in producing high-quality images with their smartphone
cameras. That means learning and understanding the camera controls as well as when
and how to use them. Doing so will put the photographer in better control of their
camera. And that will mean significantly improved photographs.
Please note: This class will not cover the taking of selfies.

Everything necessary for taking great smartphone pictures will be addressed, including:
 Learning how to use the camera controls on your specific smartphone
 Basic photographic theory
 Discussing and, if desired, installing other smartphone camera apps
 Suggestions for hand-holding your camera
 Specific steps to follow when taking a picture
 Useful accessories for your smartphone camera
 And, how to compose your photographs to produce truly wonderful results

Peter Glass has been a professional photographer in the Northeast for over 25
years, specializing in corporate, editorial, portrait, and stock photography. His photos
appear regularly in magazines, advertising brochures, websites, and on book covers.

The History of Emancipation & Juneteenth is an exciting and engaging slide presentation which will touch on the following topics: the abolitionist movement, the election of Abraham Lincoln, Freemont’s Emancipation, Hunter’s Emancipation, and the General Benjamin Butler’s orders on “Contraband of War.” The Emancipation Proclamation itself; the timing of it, the politics of it and who was actually freed by it. The gradual emancipation of slaves by Federal Troops as they conquered the different Confederate states, the end of the war and the movement of troops into Texas and the famous issuing of General Order No. 3 on June 19th, 1865 at Galveston Texas. And, finally how Juneteenth went from a local Galveston Texas celebration to a national holiday.

The Fascinating Story of Where our Vegetables Came From: What do you know about the vegetables you eat?  What is an heirloom tomato? Does it look like the original wild tomato? What group of people were responsible for breeding 4 major food crops? What popular vegetables were bred from kale? Where did sweet onions originate? Eggplant? Peas and beans? Watermelon? Bonnie will talk about the fascinating origins of the vegetables we eat each day: where they originated and what they looked like when they grew in the wild before people started breeding them for better yields and flavors.

Bonnie Power has been a Massachusetts Master Gardener since 2016 (now a Lifetime MG) and member of the MMGA Speakers Bureau since 2018…and a serious outdoor/indoor gardener most of her life. Curious and research-oriented by nature, she has many horticultural interests and areas of expertise. Bonnie holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Zoology, which informs her perspective on the management of garden insects. She is a member of the MGA Soil pH Testing team and also volunteer guide at Garden in the Woods, a Native Plant Trust botanical garden in Framingham. She learned to grow vegetables as a child from her father, and flowers and houseplants from her mother. Early in her marriage her father-in-law provided her first lessons in organic gardening.  At home in Marlborough, Bonnie grows a variety of vegetables and ornamentals (with a bias for natives).
