Join us for a special screening of Screenagers: Growing up in the Digital Age.

The humorous but sobering 68-minute movie...examines the impact of the time the average kid spends each day looking at screens NOT including homework — a whopping 6.5 hours — as well as the way screen use is affecting concentration, development and family relationships.
Award-winning SCREENAGERS probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including the director's own, and depicts messy struggles, over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through surprising insights from authors and brain scientists solutions emerge on how we can empower kids to best navigate the digital world.

Carole Shmurak returns to the Southington Library to present another great mystery series.

Historical mysteries take us to distant places and times. In this series we will look at three modern British detectives attempting to solve crimes that occurred 40–50 years earlier.  Like Foyle’s War on public television, these books combine mystery with vivid accounts of the British homefront during World War II.

Out of the Blackout (1984) – Robert Barnard

An unidentified boy from London is taken in by a couple living in the country during the height of World War II.  As a grown man, now known as Simon Thorn, he returns to London to try to find out who he is and what happened to his biological parents.  Simon’s search leads to some unsettling truths about his family and about England.

Illusions of Knowing: Why Everything You've Heard                                               About Learning is Wrong

(And How You Can Learn Better)

Whether you're a student studying for an exam, a traveler trying to learn Italian before heading out to Sicily, a teacher trying to help students understand a difficult idea, or a business trainer trying to help your sales force learn the ins and outs of a new market, we're all living in a world that requires life-long learning. The problem is that much of what we've been told about learning is wrong. "Reread your notes." "Practice makes perfect." "Play to your strengths." "Find your learning style." "In the age of Google, we should focus on skills instead of knowledge." Much of this well-intentioned advice has been debunked by cognitive science. In this workshop we'll use puzzles and problems to gain insight into how people actually learn and how we can learn faster and more effectively.

Ben Lord is a high school science teacher and writer who lives in Vermont. Four years ago, he had a ninth-grade student who put in hours of studying and who still barely passed biology. In an effort to help students like her, he began reading papers in cognitive science and found out that most of the study advice that he'd been giving students was wrong. Since then, he's taught effective learning strategies to high school students and teachers of all grade levels through his User's Guide to Your Brain seminars.

The Shipping News by E. Annie Proulx

When Quoyle's two-timing wife meets her just desserts, he retreats with his two daughters to his ancestral home on the starkly beautiful Newfoundland coast, where a rich cast of local characters and family members all play a part in Quoyle's struggle to reclaim his life.  The Shipping News shows why Annie Proulx is recognized as one of the most gifted and original writers in America today.
