POWerful Costumes: The Evolution of the Super Suit

When you think superheroes, certain images come to mind: Superman’s red and yellow "S" (or is it the Kryptonian symbol of Hope?); Wonder Woman’s red, white, and blue outfit (or is it battle skirt and armor?); and Batman’s black armor and cape (or is it grey and yellow spandex?).

Each character represents something—hope, truth, or justice—which their costumes are meant to express through bright, dramatic colors. But, as these characters change, so do their costumes.

The looks that define these characters now is often quite different than how they were first envisioned.

In honor of the growing multiverse of superheroes, this exhibit shows how some of our favorite superhero costumes have evolved through the years.

In this 1952 classic starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O'Connor, a 1920s silent-film star falls for a spunky chorus girl, much to the dismay of his diva-ish leading lady. A lighthearted musical spoof of the early days of Hollywood.

1952; Warner Bros.; Rated G; 103 min.

Bring your bagged lunch to the library and relax watching some great musical theater.  Coffee, tea, and bottled water will be available.

If you have an interest in learning more about hospice care or are interested in becoming part of the hospice team this presentation will be very informative. All are welcome to attend the lunch and learn. The lunch will be provided by Ms.Beck.

Cartoonist Roz Chast's memoir is a rich, satiric, forthright, and at times deeply disturbing exploration of how she negotiated the decline of her aging parents. Disturbing because the description of all the elements with which she had to deal in easing them toward death highlights the myriad difficulties and complexities many of us will also face. Her account is centered on her relationship with her parents, moving back and forth between her childhood (unhappy) and the more recent past. Chast brings to life her father and mother's disparate personalities and makes no bones about her fraught interaction with them, especially with her mother, and her ambivalence about having to take responsibility for helping them in their final years,.

In 2014, the book won the National Book Critics Circle Award in the Autobiography/Memoir section.

City of Angels

The state of California looms large in the history of mysteries. Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, set in San Francisco, and Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep, set in Los Angeles, essentially began the “hard–boiled” tradition of American mysteries. This spring, we’ll concentrate on mysteries set in L.A., but who knows? We may return to the Golden State again…

April 10:  The Big Sleep (1939) – Raymond Chandler
May 8:  Devil in a Blue Dress (1990) – Walter Mosley
June 12:  LA Requiem (1999) – Robert Crais

Devil in a Blue Dress  – Walter Mosley

City of Angels

The state of California looms large in the history of mysteries. Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, set in San Francisco, and Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep, set in Los Angeles, essentially began the “hard–boiled” tradition of American mysteries. This spring, we’ll concentrate on mysteries set in L.A., but who knows? We may return to the Golden State again…

April 10:  The Big Sleep (1939) – Raymond Chandler

May 8:  Devil in a Blue Dress (1990) – Walter Mosley

Private investigator Joe Pike learns that his ex-lover, Karen Garcia, has been murdered. Karen's powerful father asks Pike and his partner, Elvis Cole, to keep an eye on the LAPD as they search for his daughter's killer. This case threatens to destroy Pike and Cole's twelve-year friendship — and their lives

Are you looking for or do you have ideas about programs for adults with disabilities? Do you know someone that would benefit from specialized programing focused on their needs?

The Southington Public Library, in collaboration with the Southington Parks and Recreation Department, The ARC of Southington, and the Wallingford Parks and Recreation Department, is holding a roundtable to discuss the need for adult adaptive programing in our area. The objective of this discussion is to identify what resources are lacking as far as adults with disabilities are concerned.

Because services typically end when a child turns eighteen, the need for adult programing is crucial to continue building social, emotional and life skills. Is there a need for more social engagement? Life skills training? Emotional support? How can we address this as a community with responsible, quality activities designed to enhance the lives of the disabled? The goal of this panel is to expand regional adaptive program choices specific to adults. By combining resources we can serve a wider range of people and offer more programing than as individual towns.

Our friendly group encompasses mentor volunteers offering guidance to knitters and crocheters with varying skill levels.  Join our group on the mezzanine. We meet twice a week to work on personal and community projects, improve on skills or learn new ones and enjoy lively conversation. Meetup times are:

Monday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Thursday afternoons from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.

Come see what all the "Ado" is about! Everybody has such a wide range of experiences and you can get answers for anything.

No registration required.

'Tis the cookie season! Join us for our second annual holiday cookie exchange on Thursday, December 13. Select, from a Southington library cookbook, a cookie recipe you would like to try, bake it, and then bring the cookies to the library to share with others.  If you prefer to prepare one of your own family favorites instead, that is perfectly fine, as well. No homemade cookie will be turned away!

Please bring your cookies on one tray or platter with a copy of your cookie recipe. It is not necessary to package your cookies into portions ahead of time. A container will be provided to hold your new cookie collection. We will attempt to divide the cookies as evenly as possible, but the math may not be in our favor.
