6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM Thru Hiking the Appalachian Trail with Sam Ducharme

Those who attend this program will be treated to a modern day adventure. Sam Ducharme set out on a 2180 mile, 14 state backpacking trip from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mt. Katahdin, Maine. During his six month journey he documented the rugged beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, the wildlife, the hardships encountered on the trail, as well as the people, culture, and humanity at its finest. Come join him as he takes you through the trail towns, over the mountaintops and through the backcountry. The images and stories will leave you with a renewed awe of the beauty of our country and its people.

See his gear, how he cooked, and hear what it is like sleeping in a hammock for six months through three seasons.

You will also hear how Sam returned to the trail the following year, connecting with aspiring “Thru Hikers”, (Thru-hiking is hiking a long-distance trail end-to-end within one hiking season.) paying it forward, and his return to the summit of Katahdin one year later.

Sam Ducharme is a retired K9 Officer and is a lifelong resident of Connecticut. He has two adult sons, both serving in the United States Air Force. As an avid outdoorsman, and finding himself with an empty-nest, Sam decided to buy a backpack and a plane ticket to Georgia. From there, he started walking north. With no prior backpacking experience, he learned on the trail. Gear, trail nutrition, enduring the elements, and the logistics involved in a long distance backpacking trip were hard lessons. After 20 years working within Connecticut’s prisons, the search for a positive recharge resulted in a life changing journey.

Carole Shmurak returns this fall to facilitate a new mystery series:

And the Award Goes To…
Of the books that have won the major awards for mysteries, only one — Bootlegger’s Daughter (1992) by Margaret Maron — has won four:  the Edgar, the Agatha, the Anthony and the Macavity.  But several excellent mysteries have been multiple award winners, and this Fall we’ll read some of those.

September 12:  Bootlegger’s Daughter (1992) – Margaret Maron
October 10:  The Lincoln Lawyer (2005) – Michael Connelly
November 14:  What the Dead Know (2007) – Laura Lippman

November 14:  What the Dead Know (2007) – Laura Lippman

Two sisters disappeared from a shopping mall thirty years ago., and their bodies were never found.  When a clearly disoriented woman involved in a hit-and-run case claims to be one of the long-gone girls, her refusal to give investigators any information about the other sister deepens the mystery. In a story that moves back and forth across the decades, only Kevin Infante, a Baltimore police detective, dares to be skeptical of her tale.

Join us on for our monthly cookbook club, Cooking the Books. This month we're mixing things up a bit with a holiday cookie exchange! Select, from a Southington library cookbook, a cookie recipe you would like to try, bake it, and then bring the cookies to the library to share with others.  If you prefer to prepare one of your own family favorites instead, that is perfectly fine, as well. No homemade cookie will be turned away!

Please bring your cookies on one tray or platter with a copy of your cookie recipe. It is not necessary to package your cookies into portions ahead of time. A container will be provided to hold your new cookie collection. We will attempt to divide the cookies as evenly as possible, but the math may not be in our favor.
