9:00 AM  -  9:00 PM Muggle Studies Exhibit

Come to the Southington Library, beginning Monday, May 1st  through 31st  to view a photographic series of objects through the lens of a very interested, if slightly confused, group of observers from the magical world of Harry Potter.

This series of Muggle (non-magical person) objects have been painstakingly collected, photographed, and described—incorrectly, yet hilariously— by a pair of Muggle Studies students. Each of the Muggle artifacts have annotations attached revealing how the wizarding world sees non-magical instruments ranging from a Mini Donut Transportation Device to a Solar System Simulator.

Lovingly, and jokingly, created by Children’s Librarians Molly Virello and Lynn Pawloski, this Muggle Studies Exhibit is in honor of the upcoming Southington Library ComicCon, happening on Saturday, May 6, 2017. For more information, please contact the Children’s Department at 860.628.0947 x3.

Historical mysteries take us to distant places and times. In this series we will look at three modern British detectives attempting to solve crimes that occurred 40–50 years earlier.  Like Foyle’s War on public television, these books combine mystery with vivid accounts of the British homefront during World War II.

Some Deaths Before Dying (1999) – Peter Dickinson

Paralyzed by a debilitating illness, 90-year-old Rachel Matson finds herself confronted by a mystery that begins when a 19th-century pistol that belonged to her husband appears on Antiques Roadshow. Determined to solve it, Rachel and her caregiver uncover secrets that go back to England’s role in the Pacific during World War II.

2:30 PM  -  4:00 PM Read and Relate Book Club - My Name is Lucy Barton
    Contact: Michelle Lord   lordm@southington.or   860-628-0947

Lucy Barton is recovering slowly from what should have been a simple operation. Her mother, to whom she hasn’t spoken for many years, comes to see her.

Gentle gossip about people from Lucy’s childhood in Amgash, Illinois, seems to reconnect them, but just below the surface lie the tension and longing that have informed every aspect of Lucy’s life: her escape from her troubled family, her desire to become a writer, her marriage, her love for her two daughters.

Knitting this powerful narrative together is the brilliant storytelling voice of Lucy herself: keenly observant, deeply human, and truly unforgettable.

Book:  Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: A Savannah Story  by John Berendt.
On the morning of  May 2, 1981 shots rang out in the Johnny Mercer mansion in historic Savannah launching a decade-long murder investigation that featured an almost unbelievable assortment of colorful eccentrics who called the city home. Though this is a thoroughly-researched work of nonfiction, it reads like a well-plotted mystery novel. Non-alcoholic Cocktail: Georgia Ginger Peach Punch

3:00 PM  -  3:00 PM Blood Pressure Check 203-Urgent Care

Uncontrolled high blood pressure causes stroke, and heart attack. It’s a symptomless condition, so the only way to find out if you have it is to have regular blood pressure checks. Once detected, it can be successfully managed. Check our calendar for dates a health representative will be at the Healthy Living Outreach table to take your blood pressure for free. The Healthy Living Outreach table is in the Tween area by the back entrance.  It only takes a few minutes to have your blood pressure checked by a health representative from the Wheeler Health and Wellness Center or 203-UrgentCare Center.
