The Southington Public Library announces a unique Poetry Reading and Discussion Series. This three-part series will offer participants the opportunity to learn more about three important poets: Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, and Pablo Neruda. Each discussion will be led by a poet-scholar. Christine Beck will lead the discussions on Whitman and Neruda and Mark Sheridan will be the featured poet-scholar for the discussion of Robert Frost.

Walt Whitman – The Father of American Poetry
Wednesday, January 24th at 6:30 p.m.
The poet Walt Whitman is often called "The Father of American Poetry." We will examine why this is so.  Whitman's unique style of writing ushered in an era when poets became free to discard the strictures of rhyme and meter to view poetry more expansively. Whitman was a controversial figure in his time, as is the case with many pioneers.  We will examine how his legacy affected the Beat Poets as well as the poets who have read at presidential inaugurations. This workshop will examine a few of Whitman's poems in a detailed "close reading," inviting participants to offer their impressions and insights in the discussion.

This month's movie is "Wolf Children."

Hana, a hard-working college student, falls in love with a mysterious man who attends one of her classes though he is not an actual student. As it turns out, he is not truly human either. On a full moon night, he transforms, revealing that he is the last werewolf alive. Despite this, Hana's love remains strong, and the two ultimately decide to start a family.

Hana gives birth to two healthy children—Ame, born during rainfall, and Yuki, born during snowfall—both possessing the ability to turn into wolves, a trait inherited from their father. All too soon, however, the sudden death of her lover devastates Hana's life, leaving her to raise a peculiar family completely on her own. The stress of raising her wild-natured children in a densely populated city, all while keeping their identity a secret, culminates in a decision to move to the countryside, where she hopes Ame and Yuki can live a life free from the judgments of society.

Rated PG. Running time is 1 hour and 57 minutes.

Robert Frost
Wednesday, February 21st at 6:30 p.m.
Robert Frost was one of the early Modernist poets, and continues to be one of America's most widely read poets.  His poems typically have a satisfying surface narrative, while also yielding multiple layers of underlying meaning.  We'll explore both in close readings of "The Road Not Taken," "Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening," "Mending Wall" and other Frost favorites Moderator: Mark Sheridan

Mark Sheridan worked as an investment banker at JP Morgan for 25 years, living and working on four continents.  He then earned a PhD in Modern History & Literature from Drew University, and taught at-risk inner-city high school students in Newark and Elizabeth, NJ for five years.  He now writes poetry full-time.

'Tis the cookie season! Join us for our second annual holiday cookie exchange on Thursday, December 13. Select, from a Southington library cookbook, a cookie recipe you would like to try, bake it, and then bring the cookies to the library to share with others.  If you prefer to prepare one of your own family favorites instead, that is perfectly fine, as well. No homemade cookie will be turned away!

Please bring your cookies on one tray or platter with a copy of your cookie recipe. It is not necessary to package your cookies into portions ahead of time. A container will be provided to hold your new cookie collection. We will attempt to divide the cookies as evenly as possible, but the math may not be in our favor.
