    Contact: Donna Neiport   412-833-5585   neiportd@einetwork.net

The phrase ?Glam Rock” refers to a very specific movement in the history of Rock and Roll, limited to a brief timeframe in the early 70s and taking place primarily in Great Britain. Artists such as T.Rex, The Sweet, Slade, Roxy Music, and of course David Bowie, produced hit songs and had a significant cultural influence on fashion, sexuality, and gender. Glam Rock raised questions about authenticity, musicianship, and performance. This history traces the movement from its earliest influences, looks at precedents, spends time with the main artists, and makes a case for the lasting impact of this short-lived phenomenon on rock and roll ever since. The Scorpion's Gate by Richard A. Clarke

~~In the Reagan administration, Clarke was the deputy assistant to the secretary of state for intelligence and served as the assistant secretary of state for politico-military affairs in the first Bush administration. He served for eight years as a special assistant to President Clinton and served as national coordinator of security and counter-terrorism for Clinton and for President George W. Bush. With that experience and probably counting on name recognition, Clarke has written his first novel, a geopolitical tale set five years into the future. It deals with a coup that overthrows a number of Saudi Arabian sheiks, the frantic need to procure oil, and the threat of nuclear war by both the U.S and countries in the Middle East. The large cast of characters includes members of British intelligence, the U.S. National Security Agency, the Secret Service, Navy SEALs, and Iranian Revolutionary Guards--an equal number of good guys and bad guys

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

~~"A novel that brilliantly illuminates some of the darker interconnections between politics and sex . . . Just as the world of Orwell's 1984 gripped our imaginations, so will the world of Atwood's handmaid!" —The Washington Post Book World

"Atwood takes many trends which exist today and stretches them to their logical and chilling conclusions . . . An excellent novel about the directions our lives are taking . . . Read it while it's still allowed." —Houston Chronicle

The Man Who Invented Christmas: How Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol Rescued His Career and REvivied Our Holiday Spirits by Les Standiford

~~“A wonderfully absorbing and revealing account, full of things I did not realize about A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens, and the world of publishing. Once I started reading this book, truly, I could not put it down.”
—Dan Wakefield, author of New York in the Fifties

“The Man Who Invented Christmas is destined to be a classic about a classic. As Tiny Tim might say, ‘God Bless Everyone,’ in this case Standiford, for creating such a delightful and engaging gem—part history, part literary analysis, and all heart, just like the book that inspired it.”
—Madeleine Blais, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and author of Uphill Walkers --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
