Students in Grades K through 5 may make an appointment to meet with a teen volunteer for a half-hour of individual homework help. Appointments will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. These teens are volunteers and not classroom teachers or subject specialists, so parents are encouraged to review the covered assignment with their child for understanding, accuracy, and to verify completion. The Study Buddy program allows children to be mentored by a good older role model who can offer individual attention and help students focus and complete assigned tasks or study for upcoming tests. If your child is unable to attend a session, kindly call the children’s library staff as early as possible. If a child misses more than two unexcused sessions, he/she may no longer participate in the program and the time slot will be offered to students on a waiting list. Session will be either from 4:00-4:30 or 4:30-5:00. Please be prompt as others may be waiting. Come prepared with homework, paper, pencils, books, and projects.

Ages 3 and up, based on your family’s interest in the character of the month.
Each month, this event will feature popular children’s book characters. Curious George and Clifford of parents’ generations meet newcomers Fancy Nancy, Splat the Cat, and many others. A book or two will be shared, followed by activities involving our favorite familiar friends. Dressing in character costumes is encouraged, but completely optional. This is a perfect time for the family to create traditions with brand new characters and to reminisce about some of the great classics.

Ages 8-11 We’re giving boys a reason to read. Although reading the featured book prior to the program is not required, we do encourage kids to check out the title after experiencing all the hype and get hooked on the book. There will be no traditional literature circles–we’ll be talking while moving and doing. Physical and strategic games and unexpected adventures will have kids brainstorming, sharing ideas, and working together. Book to be announced after the May meeting. Kids will get to help choose the next month's book and activities.

New members are always welcome. Teens, you are invited to meet at the library to brainstorm ideas for the library: to plan, prepare, and promote upcoming events, to discover volunteer opportunities, and to create a space (both physically and virtually) for themselves and other teens. Help maintain an excellent collection of materials, share tech tools, and recommend free apps or great websites. Tell your friends, families, and others about the great resources available to library cardholders, and promote services like our LMXpress app, online databases for research and homework, and downloaded audiobooks, ebooks, and music. Bring a buddy to future meetings and events to help TAG become an active and important part of our library.

Maybe you won’t become the next Einstein, but chances are you’ll find that you can actually enjoy science, sometimes make a mess without getting into trouble, try engineering, and use those mad math skills you learn in school to experiment, play, design and create. Parents are encouraged to attend with their child. Literally from the minute your children were born, numerical awareness has filled their lives. Parents go from changing about 8 diapers a day to watching children grow from a 2T shirt to “big boy” 4-6X clothes. And exactly how many shovels of dirt do you think it took your child to dig that gigantic hole in your backyard? Without even realizing it, math skills are a part of daily routines. Thanks to research and lots of good ideas and activities from the folks at TERC, a nonprofit educational research organization, library staff will guide you in easy and simple ways you can foster the concepts your child needs to succeed. Learning math does not need to be done solely through drill and practice. You will be amazed at the innovative ways of finding, expressing, and representing numbers, time, measurement, and more.

A unique opportunity for emergent and reluctant readers to gain confidence and fluency by reading to a canine companion. Trained therapy dogs, accompanied by their owners, visit the library and give children the opportunity to practice reading aloud to a dog. Kids love the experience and enjoy sharing stories with a furry friend. while the dogs seem to adore the added attention. The time allotted for each reader will be dependent on the number of children registering for each session. Plan to have approximately 7-10 minutes of dedicated read aloud time. Participants may stay and support other readers as listeners in the audience. Children may either choose a book from home, which that they are comfortable reading, or practice with a title borrowed from the library. Additional reading choices will be provided at the event. Chapter books are encouraged, but due to limited time, only a small part of the story will be able to be read aloud. Younger siblings who are not yet reading independently may look at pictures and “tell” a story to the dog if time and space permits. Register to guarantee a chance to read.
