2:00 PM  -  3:00 PM Sunday Afternoon Talks: Leafcutter Ants

Dr. Barbara Beitch’s observations of ant behavior in the Discovery Room’s leafcutter colony, as well as numerous queries from visitors about these intriguing social insects, have led her to look for answers to such questions as what determines which caste member will develop from each fertilized egg, what do the ants do with all those leaves, where is the queen, why sometimes one sees a little ant hitching a ride on a leaf carried by another ant, what can we infer from the possibility that leafcutter ants are the most ancient agronomists in the world, and why do the ants have a garbage dump and a cemetery.
In this presentation, Barbara will be sharing what she has learned about leafcutter ants and other highly organized “eusocial” species, about genetic and environmental factors that shape leafcutter caste determination, and about the ecology of leafcutter ants—their symbiotic relationship with fungi and their ecological niche in the rainforest.

    Contact: Children's   203.385.4165   childrens@stratfordlibrary.org

Teens entering grades 8 to 13 may apply to be volunteers for the Stratford Library Children's Department summer program. Applicants should be self motivated, responsible, and should enjoy working with children. Volunteers learn job skills, make friends, and encourage children to love reading and the Library. Library service hours can count for community service requirements for school, church, or civic groups upon request.

In order to participate, teens should call 203.385.4165 and ask to speak to the volunteer coordinator. Teens will then need to stop by the Library - in person - to sign up for an orientation date (required) and to pick up the handout. The Children's Department program is very popular, and space in each orientation is limited. If you're interested, sign up early to guarantee your spot. The program fills up every year.

Information about the program including jobs, schedules, and other responsibilities are all discussed in orientation. There is no set schedule volunteers must work - volunteers must work at least 5 hours during the summer and may not work more than a certain number of hours per day and per week. Most volunteers work between 1-6 hours per week. If your child would like to volunteer and requires an accommodation, please phone the Library at 203.385.4165 at least 7 days before orientation. Schedules and jobs may vary based on needed accommodation.

We hope to see many Stratford teen volunteers at the Library this summer!
