   2:00 PM  -  4:30 PM Korean Film & Food

THIS PROGRAM IS CURRENTLY FILLED.  NO RESERVATIONS TAKEN.

The Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project (“KSCPP”)  will present a free program which includes a showing of historical documentary followed by the renactment of a traditional Korean wedding ceremony and the serving of Korean food.

The KSCPP has offered numerous free presentations on Korean history and culture throughout the country (over 1,500 times in the U.S. alone).

One of the documentaries will focus on King Sejong the Great, a truly enlightened monarch from the 15th century Korea.  His motto was, “The duty of a king is to love his people. That is all.”  With this belief, King Sejong initiated numerous cultural achievements and scientific inventions to improve the welfare of his people. To spread the benefits of such accomplishments, he enhanced the moveable metal type printing technology (originally invented in Korea 200 years before Gutenberg in Europe) and printed large runs of books.  His most important contribution was the invention of the Korean Alphabet Hangeul, which he created to eradicate the illiteracy in the country.

A full Korean meal will follow the film showing.

 Limited to 75 patrons.

A mother's murder. Her daughter's redemption. And the complicated past that belongs to them both.

Kelly always knew her family was different. She knew that most children didn't live with their grandparents and that their grandparents didn't own porn stores. Her classmates didn't sleep on a boat in the L.A. harbor, and she knew their next-door neighbors probably weren't drug addicts and johns. She knew that most of her classmates knew more about their moms than their cause of death. What Kelly didn't know was if she would become part of the dysfunction that surrounded her. Would she end up selling adult videos and sinking into the depths of harbor life, or would she escape to live her own story somewhere else?

As an adult, Kelly decides to discover how the place where she came from defined the person she ultimately became. To do this, she goes back to the beginning?to a mother she never knew, a thirty-year-old cold case, and two of Los Angeles's most notorious murderers.

We Are All Shipwrecks is Kelly's story of redemption from tragedy, told with a tenderness toward her family that makes it as much about preserving the strings that anchor her as it is about breaking free.

Author Talk: Shallow Graves; The Hunt for the New Bedford Highway Serial Killer

Eleven women went missing over the spring and summer of 1988 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, an old fishing port known as the Whaling City, where Moby Dick, Frederick Douglass, textile mills, and heroin-dealing represent just a few of the many threads in the community’s diverse fabric. In Shallow Graves, investigative reporter Maureen Boyle tells the story of a case that has haunted New England for thirty years.

MAUREEN BOYLE, an award winning journalist, has been a crime reporter in New England for more than 25 years, including at the Standard-Times of New Bedford during this serial murder case. She holds an undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, Conn. and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass. She is now director of the Journalism Program at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts. This is her first book.

After the Talk Maureen will be available for questions and to sign books. Books can be purchased at the event.
