    Contact: Children's   203.385.4165   childrens@stratfordlibrary.org

Teens entering grades 8 to 13 may apply to be volunteers for the Stratford Library Children's Department summer program. Applicants should be self motivated, responsible, and should enjoy working with children. Volunteers learn job skills, make friends, and encourage children to love reading and the Library. Library service hours can count for community service requirements for school, church, or civic groups upon request.

In order to participate, teens should call 203.385.4165 and ask to speak to the volunteer coordinator. Teens will then need to stop by the Library - in person - to sign up for an orientation date (required) and to pick up the handout. The Children's Department program is very popular, and space in each orientation is limited. If you're interested, sign up early to guarantee your spot. The program fills up every year.

Information about the program including jobs, schedules, and other responsibilities are all discussed in orientation. There is no set schedule volunteers must work - volunteers must work at least 5 hours during the summer and may not work more than a certain number of hours per day and per week. Most volunteers work between 1-6 hours per week. If your child would like to volunteer and requires an accommodation, please phone the Library at 203.385.4165 at least 7 days before orientation. Schedules and jobs may vary based on needed accommodation.

We hope to see many Stratford teen volunteers at the Library this summer!

7:00 PM Books on Tap Reads A Mother's Reckoning

On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked into Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Over the course of minutes, they would kill twelve students and a teacher and wound twenty-four others before taking their own lives. For the last sixteen years, Sue Klebold, Dylan’s mother, has lived with the indescribable grief and shame of that day. How, she agonizes, as his mother, did she not know something was wrong? Filled with hard-won wisdom and compassion, A Mother’s Reckoning is a powerful and haunting book that sheds light on one of the most pressing issues of our time.

To RSVP for our Books on Tap discussion of A Mother's Reckoning please go to: meetup.com/Stratford-book-club-social-hub/. We'll get settled, order food/drinks, and catch up with everyone at 7pm on Tuesday, June 27th. Our book discussion starts at 7:30pm. Cheers!

Dancers paid tribute to lindy innovator Frankie Manning with a dance contest as the audience crowned the fourth annual Ambassador Prize winners.

7:00 PM Books on Tap Reads Missoula

Missoula, Montana, is a typical college town, home to a highly regarded state university whose beloved football team inspires a passionately loyal fan base. Between January 2008 and May 2012, hundreds of students reported sexual assaults to the local police. Few of the cases were properly handled by either the university or local authorities. In this, Missoula is also typical.

Taking the town as a case study for a crime that is prevalent throughout the nation, Krakauer documents the experiences of five victims: their fear and self-doubt in the aftermath; the skepticism directed at them by police, prosecutors, and the public; their bravery in pushing forward and what it cost them.

To RSVP for our Books on Tap discussion of Jon Krakauer's Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town please go to: meetup.com/Stratford-book-club-social-hub/. We'll get settled, order food/drinks, and catch up with everyone at 7pm on Tuesday, July 25th at The Sitting Duck Tavern. Our book discussion starts at 7:30pm. Cheers!
