First Frost by Sarah Addison Allen

From the New York Times bestselling author of GARDEN SPELLS comes a story of the Waverley family, in a novel as sparkling as the first dusting of frost on new-fallen leaves...

It's October in Bascom, North Carolina, and autumn will not go quietly. As temperatures drop and leaves begin to turn, the Waverley women are made restless by the whims of their mischievous apple tree... and all the magic that swirls around it. But this year, first frost has much more in store.

Claire Waverley has started a successful new venture, Waverley's Candies. Though her handcrafted confections-rose to recall lost love, lavender to promote happiness and lemon verbena to soothe throats and minds-are singularly effective, the business of selling them is costing her the everyday joys of her family, and her belief in her own precious gifts.

Sydney Waverley, too, is losing her balance. With each passing day she longs more for a baby- a namesake for her wonderful Henry. Yet the longer she tries, the more her desire becomes an unquenchable thirst, stealing the pleasure out of the life she already has.

Sydney's daughter, Bay, has lost her heart to the boy she knows it belongs to...if only he could see it, too. But how can he, when he is so far outside her grasp that he appears to her as little more than a puff of smoke?

When a mysterious stranger shows up and challenges the very heart of their family, each of them must make choices they have never confronted before. And through it all, the Waverley sisters must search for a way to hold their family together through their troublesome season of change, waiting for that extraordinary event that is First Frost.

Lose yourself in Sarah Addison Allen's enchanting world and fall for her charmed characters in this captivating story that proves that a happily-ever-after is never the real ending to a story. It's where the real story begins.

6:30 PM Eagles in Connecticut: Return of an Icon
Contact: Lisa Bower Courtney   860-583-4467   lbcourtney@biblio.org

Bald eagles were once in such dire trouble that people discussed what should replace them as America’s national symbol. The ongoing story of their recovery as a species in Connecticut will be the subject of a talk by wildlife biologist, Brian Hess.

With accompanying projected images, Mr. Hess will explain eagle biology and the story of their perilous population decline and subsequent re-covery, as well as what is being done to con-serve their populations for future generations.
Brian Hess is a wildlife biologist with the Con-necticut Department of Energy and Environmen-tal Protection. Mr. Hess studied wildlife conser-vation as an undergraduate at the University of Delaware and received his M.S. from the Univer-sity of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. He has worked with California condors, greater prairie-chickens, mottled ducks, and shorebirds before starting with DEEP in 2014. The Wildlife Division’s Wild-life Diversity Program conserves non-game wild-life. As part of that group, Brian works to moni-tor and conserve large raptors, reptiles, and amphibians.

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

In love we find out who we want to be.

In war we find out who we are.

FRANCE, 1939

In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn't believe that the Nazis will invade France … but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent. When a German captain requisitions Vianne's home, she and her daughter must live with the enemy or lose everything. Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates all around them, she is forced to make one impossible choice after another to keep her family alive.

Vianne's sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. While thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war, she meets Gäetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can … completely. But when he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never looks back, risking her life time and again to save others.

With courage, grace and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of WWII and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France--a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

2:00 PM The Ghosts of Chippeny Hill
Contact: Lisa Bower Courtney   860-583-4467   lbcourtney@biblio.org

This program has been postponed until February, date will be announced soon!

Forgotten legends, mysteries, monsters and stories of Chippeny Hill. Chippeny Hill now modernized as “Chippens Hill” is at the corner of Harwinton, Bristol and Plymouth. It was notorious for the activities of the Revolutionary War’s Tories and Sons of Liberty. Some apparently never left the area.  The Monster of the Marsh, ghostly images from Todd Hollow and orbs seen near the site of a former colonial dam, mysteries, and ghostly specters of villagers unaware of the 21st century at Lamson Corners are among the fascinating tales from Town Historian Judy Giguere's latest book.
