The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, which has an office in Tewksbury, offers advice for extreme summer weather, including tornadoes.

The Oklahoma Tornado is a strong reminder of the devastation that these storms can bring this time of year. Tornadoes are nature’s most violent storms, with whirling winds that can reach 300 mph. Spawned from powerful thunderstorms, damage paths can be in excess of one mile wide and 50 miles long.

Massachusetts residents have recently experienced the destruction of the Greater Springfield Tornado in June 1, 2011 which killed three, injured over 300 and destroyed or damaged over 1,400 homes and businesses. The infamous Worcester Tornado, which swept through Central Massachusetts in June 9, 1953, killed 94, seriously injured over 1,200 and over 4,300 homes and businesses destroyed or damaged.

“Although tornadoes as severe as the Springfield and Worcester Tornadoes are rare, we are reminded that they can happen here and how damaging they can be,” states Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency Director Kurt Schwartz. “It is important that we all familiarize ourselves with what we should look for and

    Contact: Robert Hayes   978-640-4490 x 205   rhayes@mvlc.org
About The Talk: Massachusetts's historic graveyards are the final resting places for tales of the strange and supernatural.  From Newburyport to Truro, these graveyards often frighten the living, but the dead who rest within them have stories to share with the world they left behind.  While Giles Corey is said to haunt the Howard Street Cemetery in Salem, cursing those involved in the infamous witch trials, visitors to the Forset Hills Cemetery in Jamacia Plain enjoy an arboretum and a burial ground with Victorian-era memorials.  One of the oldest cemeteries in Massachusetts, Old Burial Hill in Marblehead, has been the final resting place for residents for nearly 375 years.  Author Roxie Zwicker tours the Bay State's oldest burial grounds, exploring the stones, stories and supernatural lore of these hallowed places.

About The Talk: Learn about the paranormal in your sleep, what your dreams mean, and the symbols and archetypes of our dream world.  We spend a third of our lives sleeping, with much of the night filled with dreams.  Peculiarly vivid, disturbing dreams leave behind impressions that are hard to dismiss.  But what are nightmares?  And what significance do they have for the dreamer?  Questions like these have been asked and answered in all time periods in all of the world's cultures.  Examine ideas about bad dreams found in different parts of the world, in different periods of Western history, in recent clinical research, in current theories of the occult, and in popular films.

About The Speaker: Jeff Belanger is one of the most visible paranormal researchers today.  Jeff is the author of over a dozen books, including the best-sellers: "The Nightmare Encyclopedia," "Weird Massachusetts," and "The World's Most Haunted Places."  He's the founder of Ghostvillage.com, the web's most popular paranormal destination according to Google, and a noted speaker and media personality providing dozens of lectures per year at colleges, universities, conferences and libraries.  He's also the host of the cable/web talk show - '30 Odd Minutes' - which is available in over 3 million homes in the United States.  Jeff is also a series writer and researcher for 'Ghost Adventures' on the Travel Channel.

For ages 5 and up.

Who is Robert Rivest? He is a mime! A comic actor! An improv entreprenaur! Dig how Robert will bring his favorite "underground" stories to life from a pirate digging for gold to someone digging for fossils (is that a dinosaur story I hear?) to a child building a sandcastle at the beach. Robert shares what he loves about mime and reading with the audience and will encourage EVERYONE to become interactive with mime, allowing us all to have a fun time playing at the library!

A ticket is required for admittance to this event. FREE tickets are available at the Children's desk beginning on July 1st. Limit of 6 tickets per person. Every "body" coming into the room needs a ticket. Sorry, tickets may NOT be held.

    Contact: Robert Hayes   978-640-4490 x 205   rhayes@mvlc.org
About The Talk: Spend an evening with Edgar Allan Poe and listen to him recite some of his horror masterpieces.  The name "Poe" brings to mind images of murderers and madmen, premature burials, and mysterious women who return from the dead.  His works have been in print since 1827, and include literary classics as "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Raven," and "The Fall of the House of Usher."  Born in Boston, this versatile writer's oeuvre includes short stories, poetry, a novel, a textbook, a book of scientific theory, and hundreds of essays and book reviews.  Poe is widely acknowledged as the inventor of the modern detective story and an innovator in the science fiction genre, but he made his living as America's first great literary critic and theoretician.  Poe's reputation today rests primarily on his tales of terror as well as on his haunting lyric poetry.  (taken from www.poemuseum.com)

About The Performer: Rob Velella is an independent literary historian and playwright specializing in American literature of the 19th century.  As a scholar, Rob has published articles and presented academic papers on figures as varied as Margaret Fuller, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and Walt Whitman.  Nicknamed the "Prometheus of American literary scholarship," he has taken his research outside of academia by lecturing at various historical sites, libraries and colleges.  Recently, Rob served as a research associate for "The Raven in the Frong Pond: Edgar Allan Poe and Boston" for the Boston Public Library.  In his ongoing efforts to bring the writers of yesterday back to the readers of today, he has dramatically brought to life several literary figures, including the young Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allan Poe.  Rob also maintains the American Literary Blog, an "almost-daily celebration of important (and not-so-important) dates in 19th century American literary history."

    Contact: Robert Hayes   978-640-4490 x 205   rhayes@mvlc.org
About The Talk: It should come as no surprise that one of the nation's oldest cities brims with spirits of those who lived and died in its hundreds of years of tumultuous history.  Boston boasts countless stories of the supernatural.  Many students at Boston College have encountered an unearthly hound that haunts the O'Connell House to this day.  Be on the watch for an actor who sits in on rehearsals on Huntington Theatre and restless spirits rumored to haunt Boston Common at night.  From the Victorian brownstones of Back Bay to the shores of the Boston Harbor Islands, there is hardly a corner of the Hub where the paranormal cannot be experienced.

About The Speaker: Sam Baltrusis is the author of "Ghosts of Boston: Haunts of the Hub" and moonlights as a tour guide with "Haunted Boston," highlighting the city's historical haunts.  He freelances for various publications, including "Boston Spirit" magazine and "STUFF."  Sam teaches writing and journalism classes at the Boston Center for Adult Education.  His blog, "Loaded Gun Boston," is an online destination focusing on the latest crop of made-in Boston films, showcasing the behind-the-scenes buzz surrounding Hollywood East, as well as the people, places and products featured.  In the past, Sam's worked for VH1, MTV.com, "Newsweek," WHDH.com, ABC Radio and as a regional stringer for the "New York Times."
