1:00 PM  -  3:00 PM Indie Author Day
    Contact: Laurie Cavanaugh   781-848-0405 x4430   lcavanaugh@braintreema.gov

The Thayer Public Library is hosting an Indie Author Day program, starting with a panel of three area authors who will talk about writing and self-publishing their books, at 1:00 p.m., followed by an hour-long live-streamed Web broadcast introducing SELF-e and featuring a Q & A with writers, agents and other industry leaders. As indie publishing continues to gain ground, there are many authors who are still struggling to find their footing in the publishing world and get discovered. By working with their local library to build an audience within their communities, authors are able to find local fans that will help carry them to greater renown.

Featured indie authors from area towns are:

  • Linda Clarke Sheehan, long-time teacher in Braintree Public Schools and author of The Chronicles of Mr. Kitty series of picture books
  • Gerald Carmichael, former director of Homeless Veterans for New England and author of Two Tears: Dinnda, a novel of addiction
  • Heather Driscoll, author of He Calls Me Harp, a novel for new adults

Now, with all of the tools and guidance now available in libraries and beyond, including SELF-e, Pressbooks Public, BookLife, Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) and more, libraries are in a better position than ever before to truly make an impact in the lives and careers of local writers. As the self publishing and indie industries grow, writers who might not have been discovered through traditional channels are able to get their voices heard.

Print copies of the area authors' books will be available for purchase and signing, but no purchase is necessary to attend this free two-hour program.

Screening of the 2015 Wildlife Film Festival award winning documentary, DamNationDamNation highlights the impacts of dams on sea run fisheries focusing on the restoration of the Elwha River, the largest dam removal in American history. The documentary magically captures the transformation of values in America from conquest of the natural world to a new awakening that we ourselves are a part of nature.

Like the salmon of the Elwha, the river herring of Braintree's Monatiquot River are blocked by an obsolete dam. Following the documentary we will discuss what is being done and what we can do about the Armstrong Dam that blocks herring passage to historic spawning habitat.

THE SPECIAL ORGANIZER Are you organized for your next IEP/504 meeting?  Teams use evidence to make decisions.  Where is your evidence? Sitting in a drawer?  Piled up on the table?  In a bin in the basement?  The proof you need to support your position is likely in those fact and data filled documents waiting to be discovered.  An organized file is powerful and allows you to easily access evidence such as past work, goals and testing.  You can see which areas of need have gone unaddressed and advocate for additional therapies or services with facts and data.

This presentation by Jennifer Bolduc, Special Organizer will provide tips and tricks on how to effectively advocate for your child by getting organized.

If you have any questions, please contact Linda Kokoros (SEPAC) at (617) 417-3481 or via email at jkokoros@verizon.net

WHEN YOU DISAGREE WITH THE TEAM ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

Advocating for children in the special education system can sometimes be overwhelming for parents. Over the past decade, Attorney Jeffrey Sankey has worked with hundreds of parents to help them obtain special education services for their children. In this presentation, Attorney Sankey will discuss strategies to help you to work collaboratively with your child’s special education team and, when disagreements arise, the various options available to parents to resolve them.  Please come with any questions you may have.

If you have any questions, please contact Leah Nabstedt (SEPAC) at 617-943-2452 or via email at lnabstedt@verizon.net

Cookbook lovers, unite! Now there is a library book club just for you! Borrow the cookbook selection from the library and make a dish from it to share. Let Laurie know what you're planning on making ahead of time so we can have a variety of dishes to sample. No need to double recipes; we just need enough for everyone to have a taste.

The May cookbook selection is Master of the Grill: Foolproof Recipes, Top-Rated Gadgets, Gear & Ingredients Plus Clever Test Kitchen Tips & Fascinating Food Science by America's Test Kitchen. Copies will be available from the Circulation Desk starting April  27th. Please register through the library event calendar or contact Laurie by phone (781-848-0405, x4430) or email (lcavanaugh@braintreema.gov) to join the group.

The plan is for the group to meet every other month to try out a different cookbook each time. New members are always welcome!
