"On a September day in Manhattan in 1939, twenty-something Caroline Ferriday is consumed by her efforts to secure the perfect boutonniere for an important French diplomat and resisting the romantic advances of a married actor. Meanwhile across the Atlantic, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish Catholic teenager, is nervously anticipating the changes that are sure to come since Germany has declared war on Poland. As tensions rise abroad - and in her personal life - Caroline's interest in aiding the war effort in France grows and she eventually comes to hear about the dire situation at the Ravensbruck all-female concentration camp. At the same time, Kasia's carefree youth is quickly slipping away, only to be replaced by a fervor for the Polish resistance movement. Through Ravensbruck - and the horrific atrocities taking place there told in part by an infamous German surgeon, Herta Oberheuser - the two women's lives will converge in unprecedented ways and a novel of redemption and hope emerges that is breathtaking in scope and depth"

The program will include meditation instruction, sitting and walking practices as well as time for question and answers

Come explore the present moment with us and feel free to bring a friend.

All programs are free and open to the public. You do not have to be a resident of Braintree to attend.   Registration is required.

For Teens entering grades 6-12

In creative writing, world building is crucial to a believable story, whether it’s an epic fantasy or a contemporary novel. In this session, author Lori Goldstein will show you strategies authors use when creating the worlds for their novels. Examples will be given from multiple genres so you can understand how complex world building actually is. You will leave with a new understanding that “setting” and “world building” are two very different, and important, things to every story.

Want to see the world Lori made?  You can check out her Becoming Jinn series in the Teen Room.

To ensure a spot, registration required.

1:30 PM  -  2:30 PM Make Architectural house model, floor plan age 5 up
    Contact: Children's Room   781 848-0405 x4425   referencedesk@braintreema.gov

Make an model of a famous modern house - "Fallingwater" designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, one of America's most famous architects. Also try making an architectural floor plan of a room.

First, Braintree children Nora, Myles and Ethan tell about their family visit to "Fallingwater" in  Chicago, and interesting things they found out about it!

For children age 5 up, they can create the model of LEGOs or blocks. Older youth age 7 - 11 additionally may choose to learn to draw "floor plans"  (what  a house looks like from the top) and try it out by drawing the plan of "Fallingwater", or their own room. Fun for those who like to draw, or learn or build.

This is also a Kids Book Club event. To participate, read ahead, at home "Wright 3" by Blue Balliet. Copies are available at the desk, or you can place a hold. In "Wright 3", three kids find a series of mysterious coincidences about the famous Robie House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. They try to stop the house from being demolished. If you liked the mystery "Chasing Vermeer" by this author (Balliet), the same children (Calder, Petra, Tommy) try to puzzle out what is going in in "Wright 3". This book is written at a fifth grade level, so best for kids going into 5th and 6th grade, or as a read-aloud for grades 3 and 4. We will chat about the book while making the Frank Lloyd Wright House models.

Cookbook lovers, unite! Now there is a library book club just for you! Borrow the cookbook selection from the library and make a dish from it to share. Let Laurie know what you're planning on making ahead of time so we can have a variety of dishes to sample. No need to double recipes; we just need enough for everyone to have a taste.

The cookbook selection is [To Be Determined]. Copies will be available from the Circulation Desk approximately one month in advance. Please register through the library event calendar or contact Laurie by phone (781-848-0405, x4430) or email (lcavanaugh@braintreema.gov) to join the group.

The plan is for the group to meet every other month to try out a different cookbook each time. New members are always welcome!
