   7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Gary Gekow-Employment Workshop

Join Gark Gekow on how to answer the question Tell me about yourself?

Tell me about yourself? Job applicants should welcome this question with open arms as it gives them a beautiful chance to talk about themselves in the most positive light. The problem is it is too big a canvas. The question is very general and most people have no idea where to start, what to include and when to end their answer. This is a critical part of the interview since it is often the very first question that is asked and sets the stage for the rest of the interview. We spend two hours discussing best practices as it relates to what to say, what examples to highlight, where to begin and when/where to end their story. It is a very interactive workshop and people leave the program with a new found confidence about themselves.

Facilitator is Gary Gekow, a senior employment specialist with 21 years of recruiting experience in the Boston staffing industry.

Children and young adults with special needs and disabilities need parents and guardians who are effective advocates. The inclusion of your child in school and the community is his/her right under IDEA, ADA and MA Special Education Laws. This workshop will provide an overview of how parents/guardians can obtain the skills for effective advocacy. Disability rights to access go well beyond the IEP and the school system and they can be used to allow inclusion in the community, from town programs to private organizations.

Supporting children with special needs at home and in the community can be extremely challenging for families. Unlike the school environment, everyday life doesn’t necessarily include structure, predictability and a knowledgeable/supportive community. Katy Shamitz, Founder & Director of Skills for Living, will be leading this workshop to provide useful strategies and resources for parents/guardians on ways to support their special needs child at home and in the community. Topics include successful strategies for activities of daily living, including building routines in the home, using visual supports and social stories, strategies for success in community outings, including teaching play/social skills and safety awareness.
