Over the Rainbow — The Songs of Harold Arlen

Harold Arlen earned his place in the history of American music by co-writing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow” for the 1939 movie classic, The Wizard of Oz — a song which is considered by many to be the number one pop song of the 20th century.Born the son of a cantor in Buffalo, NY, Arlen moved to New York City and wrote for Harlem's Cotton Club revues in the 20s — co-creating standards such as “Stormy Weather” and “I’ve Got The World On A String” for the Duke Ellington Orchestra and vocalist Ethel Waters. By the 30s, Harold Arlen had followed the migration of New York songwriters west to Hollywood where he was in demand writing for movie musicals. After the success of The Wizard of Oz, Arlen continued to write hit songs for 40 years — composing more than 400 pieces for Broadway shows and major motion pictures.Pianist Joe Reid and vocalist Will McMillan breathe new life into Arlen’s beloved standards — including “Get Happy,” “It’s Only a Paper Moon,” “That Old Black Magic,” “Accentuate the Positive,” “Blues In The Night,” “Come Rain of Come Shine,” “If I Only Had A Brain,” “Let’s Fall In Love,” and, of course,  “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”Will McMillan has performed as a featured vocalist at venues such as Scullers Jazz Club, Sanders Theatre, John F. Kennedy Library, Arlington Street Church, Hi-Hat Club (RI),Inn on Newfound Lake (NH), Spring Island (SC), Westbeth Performance Center (NYC) andYin Par Le Garcon Chinois (Shanghai). For years McMillan hosted "Will & Company," a series at the Blacksmith House in Harvard Square highlighting local performers and songwriters, which earned him an IRNE Award for Best Cabaret Show in a Small Venue. He has released three CDs — "Sketchbook 1" with pianist Steve Sweeting, “Reel One” with the vocal ensemble At The Movies, and “If I Loved You,” with singer Bobbi Carrey. You are welcome to visit his web site, willsings.com, listen to music at his blog, AMusicalifeOnPlanetEarth.WordPress.com,or watch him sing on YouTube by searching “Will McMillan.”

Pianist Joe Reid enjoys a busy music career, playing 100+ concerts a year.  He performs with a wide range of jazz and classical musicians, and has worked with a broad spectrum of theatre groups, jazz and chamber ensembles and dance troupes.  Joe has worked as an accompanist for the Boston Conservatory, the Longy School of Music, the New School of Music in Cambridge and the Mark Morris Dance Company.  Check out Joe’s new YouTube channel by searching YouTube under “Joe Reid Music” or visit his website, www.joereidmusic.com.

Welcome to the Graveyard! A Virtual Cemetary Tour

Presented by The Gravestone Girls

Displaying oct 10 rural.jpg

The Gravestone Girls’ mission is to "Keep Our Dead Alive!”  We create decorative artwork using the beautiful and primitive images carved on olde New England gravestones; give lectures on cemetery art, history and symbolism as well as teach gravestone rubbing classes!  Our work aims to entertain and educate on the historical perspective of old cemeteries by documenting and preserving the beautiful art they contain.

To produce our three-dimensional art pieces, we perfected a casting technique which exactly replicated the original gravestone carving.  The creations in our collection are derived from 17th-21st century gravestones found in cemeteries throughout the New England region.  All our pieces are hand-formed and finished in a process we specifically developed.  It's important to note that no stones are ever harmed by our techniques—preservation is our primary concern!

Artwork by The Gravestone Girls is used to decorate the home and garden, provide a resource for historical education and fundraising as well as assist people in the genealogical documentation of their ancestral gravestones.  Wall hangings, jewelry, magnets, clocks and other interior and exterior pieces are the result of our artistic endeavors.  We regularly make our craft available to families desiring a memento from a sacred resting place. We also develop collections of important images related to a town’s history to be used as a method to raise money for cemetery restoration projects, fund other historical related projects and help support a group’s future activities.

The Gravestone Girls endeavor to help preserve a rich folk art tradition unique to our nation.  We hope you are intrigued enough by our activities to investigate and expand on the special history which lives in everyone’s backyards.

Mass Memories Road Show

The Town of Marshfield will be hosting Mass Memories Road Show on October 28, 2017 at the Ventress Memorial Library!

The Mass. Memories Road Show (MMRS) at UMass Boston is an event-based public history project that digitizes family photos and memories shared by the people of Massachusetts. University Archives staff work with local planning teams to organize free public events where residents are invited to bring family photos to be scanned and included in this digital archive. Contributors are invited to share “the story behind the photos” on video, have their own “keepsake photo” taken, and receive advice from professional archivists and historians on dating and caring for their family photos.

To date, the project has digitized nearly 8,000 photographs and stories from across the state, creating an educational resource of primary sources for future generations. Over time, we hope to visit each of the 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts.

The Mass. Memories Road Show is supported in part through the generosity of the Patricia C. Flaherty '81 Endowed Fund at University of Massachusetts Boston.
