Title:  Stephen Collins presents "Irish Voices"

Ventress Library Cultural Series Presents "Irish Voices" on March 22

Come celebrate the literary tradition of native Ireland right here in Marshfield.

Actor Stephen Collins performs a series of dramatic monologues, both

serious and funny, of excerpts from the works of prominent Irish writers,

poets and playwrights including James Joyce, Seamus Heaney, W.B. Yeats

and Frank McCourt. They call it the "Norton Anthology of English Literature" and yet many of the writers included were born in Ireland. The commonality, of course, is the English language but there are vast cultural differences which will be explored in this performance. A great deal of Irish writing deals with the land, the past, the church, and the changing political landscape.

Come hear the voices of Ireland brought to life!
VML Cultural Series events are free and open to the public; no tickets required. The

library and program room are handicapped accessible. For more information contact

librarian Chris Woods at 781-834-5535, cwoods@ocln.org and visit ventresslibrary.org

The newest addition to his repertoire, a one man show Shake-Scene has been met to rave reviews. He also works as a professionally licensed tour guide doing narrated historical tours of Boston. His Whitman performances have taken him all over the country. The group features the charismatic singing and tap dancing team of Ted and Pamela Powers, with the versatile and virtuosic Peter H. Bloom on flute and Mark Leighton on guitar. Expect an exhilarating show with sizzling bebop tunes like My Little Suede Shoes by Charlie Parker and Webb City by Bud Powell, plus up-tempo song and dance numbers from the Great American Songbook, including Blue Skies, Let’s Fall in Love, Top Hat, Sunny Side of the Street, Paper Moon, and It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing.

The Modernistics are Ted Powers, guitar, ukulele, tap and vocals; Pamela Powers, tap and vocals; Peter H. Bloom, flute; and Mark Leighton, guitar. The four artists have performed extensively in the United States and abroad. Peter H. Bloom, praised for his “hip, jazzy flute work” (allaboutjazz.com), has concertized with jazz and classical ensembles in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand and is featured on more than 40 CDs. He is a veteran of the illustrious Aardvark Jazz Orchestra (44th season). Mark Leighton is acclaimed as a jazz and classical guitarist, performs across the Northeast, and serves on the faculties of Colby College and St. George’s School. Ted Powers’ career in jazz, blues, and pop includes several years as a solo performer in the south of France and tap-dancing in the U.S. with the legendary Jimmy “Sir Slyde” Mitchell. The Sacco-Vanzetti Case Revisited
Presented by Christopher Daley

Join us at the Ventress Memorial Library on Saturday, April 8th at 2 pm for the historical presentation, The Sacco-Vanzetti Case Revisited, presented by Christopher Daley.

An excerpt from Christopher Daley’s site reads, “The Sacco-Vanzetti Case caused a world-wide sensation in the 1920’s.  Two Italian immigrants; Bartolomeo Vanzetti & Nicola Sacco - both avowed anarchists - were convicted in a Massachusetts courtroom in 1921 for the robbery & murder of a paymaster and his guard in South Braintree…This slide presentation is a one hour lecture that chronicles the saga the two Italian anarchists. The story begins with the robberies in Bridgewater and Braintree Massachusetts and then turns to the famous trial at Dedham and the following six years of attempts to get a new trial. Next, the worldwide protests and demonstrations will be discussed and then, finally, the last days of Sacco and Vanzetti will be highlighted with a vivid description of their sentencing and execution.” Visit http://www.daleyhistory.com/ for more information on Christopher Daley.

Light refreshments will be provided. This is a free program, but the Friends of the Ventress Memorial Library will happily accept donations at the door.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Ventress Memorial Library.

Over the Rainbow — The Songs of Harold Arlen

Harold Arlen earned his place in the history of American music by co-writing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow” for the 1939 movie classic, The Wizard of Oz — a song which is considered by many to be the number one pop song of the 20th century.Born the son of a cantor in Buffalo, NY, Arlen moved to New York City and wrote for Harlem's Cotton Club revues in the 20s — co-creating standards such as “Stormy Weather” and “I’ve Got The World On A String” for the Duke Ellington Orchestra and vocalist Ethel Waters. By the 30s, Harold Arlen had followed the migration of New York songwriters west to Hollywood where he was in demand writing for movie musicals. After the success of The Wizard of Oz, Arlen continued to write hit songs for 40 years — composing more than 400 pieces for Broadway shows and major motion pictures.Pianist Joe Reid and vocalist Will McMillan breathe new life into Arlen’s beloved standards — including “Get Happy,” “It’s Only a Paper Moon,” “That Old Black Magic,” “Accentuate the Positive,” “Blues In The Night,” “Come Rain of Come Shine,” “If I Only Had A Brain,” “Let’s Fall In Love,” and, of course,  “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”Will McMillan has performed as a featured vocalist at venues such as Scullers Jazz Club, Sanders Theatre, John F. Kennedy Library, Arlington Street Church, Hi-Hat Club (RI),Inn on Newfound Lake (NH), Spring Island (SC), Westbeth Performance Center (NYC) andYin Par Le Garcon Chinois (Shanghai). For years McMillan hosted "Will & Company," a series at the Blacksmith House in Harvard Square highlighting local performers and songwriters, which earned him an IRNE Award for Best Cabaret Show in a Small Venue. He has released three CDs — "Sketchbook 1" with pianist Steve Sweeting, “Reel One” with the vocal ensemble At The Movies, and “If I Loved You,” with singer Bobbi Carrey. You are welcome to visit his web site, willsings.com, listen to music at his blog, AMusicalifeOnPlanetEarth.WordPress.com,or watch him sing on YouTube by searching “Will McMillan.”

Pianist Joe Reid enjoys a busy music career, playing 100+ concerts a year.  He performs with a wide range of jazz and classical musicians, and has worked with a broad spectrum of theatre groups, jazz and chamber ensembles and dance troupes.  Joe has worked as an accompanist for the Boston Conservatory, the Longy School of Music, the New School of Music in Cambridge and the Mark Morris Dance Company.  Check out Joe’s new YouTube channel by searching YouTube under “Joe Reid Music” or visit his website, www.joereidmusic.com.
