Wednesday Night Lecture * Wednesday, October 18, 7-8:30 p.m., "Bowing to the Emperor", presented by author Robine Andrau

What Does It Take to Survive 3-1/2 Years as Prisoners
of the Japanese in WWII?
Join Scituate-based Robine Andrau as she relates the riveting his-and-her narrative of her resilient family*s WWII experience in their respective prison camps in Indonesia and in Japan, and shines a light on the atrocities the Japanese inflicted on the predominantly Dutch population living in Indonesia.
When WWII reached the then-Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), Robine Andrau, along with her mother and her two sisters, was imprisoned in what was reputed to be the worst concentration camp in Java. Her book, "Bowing to the Emperor", recounts details of her time there. Besides being the personal story of a family, "Bowing to the Emperor"  is also a universal story of survival and of hope despite loss of country and loss of all material possessions. Books available for sale and signing on the night. Free and open to the public; no tickets required. Program Room is handicapped accessible.

Welcome to the Graveyard! A Virtual Cemetary Tour

Presented by The Gravestone Girls

Image result for gravestone girls

Join us at the VML on Wednesday, October 25th from 6:30-8 pm for a lecture given by The Gravestone Girls! The Gravestone Girls’ mission is to “Keep Our Dead Alive!” They create decorative artwork using the beautiful and primitive images carved on olde New England gravestones.

Their lecture will focus on New England cemetery art, history and symbolism. The 'virtual tour', called "Welcome to The Graveyard" takes us from colonial burial grounds, through the rural cemetery movement of the 19th century and into 21st century locations. It examines why we have cemeteries and gravestones, why they look like they do and how styles and art have evolved over almost 400 years.

The event is free and open to the public! No tickets or registration required. Please contact Chris at 781-834-5535 or at cwoods@ocln.org if you have any questions.

"Given how much our president talks about fake news, it's important to know what it is, how it looks, and how you can fight it. As the Trump administration addresses the topic of “fake news” through its communication, it is important to examine the role that "fake news" plays in our everyday lives. Join Assistant Professor Kyle Moody (Communications Media, Fitchburg State University) for a talk on fake news and media consumption in the 21st century. This will cover a wide variety of topics, ranging from the history of yellow journalism to the role that reporters play in media consumption and circulation, along with how news is spread and affects us all in our modern times. Finally, it will include a brief discussion of "what can we do?" that will cover some basic strategies for information literacy to enable us to become better consumers of news media." ?

Mass Memories Road Show

p15774coll6

The Town of Marshfield will be hosting Mass Memories Road Show on October 28, 2017 at the Ventress Memorial Library!

The Mass. Memories Road Show (MMRS) at UMass Boston is an event-based public history project that digitizes family photos and memories shared by the people of Massachusetts. University Archives staff work with local planning teams to organize free public events where residents are invited to bring family photos to be scanned and included in this digital archive. Contributors are invited to share “the story behind the photos” on video, have their own “keepsake photo” taken, and receive advice from professional archivists and historians on dating and caring for their family photos.

To date, the project has digitized nearly 8,000 photographs and stories from across the state, creating an educational resource of primary sources for future generations. Over time, we hope to visit each of the 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts.

The Mass. Memories Road Show is supported in part through the generosity of the Patricia C. Flaherty '81 Endowed Fund at University of Massachusetts Boston.

A Visit with Louisa May Alcott

Welcome! You will  meet Jan Turnquist, Executive Director of the historic house museum, Orchard House, in Concord, Mass, where Little Women was written in 1868.  Known as their resident Louisa May Alcott, Jan has portrayed Miss Alcott in Public Service Announcements currently running nationally on the FOX TV network, several BBC productions, including "Blue Peter," Britain's longest running children's TV show, "Book Worm" and their Open University programs, as well as on Public Television (PBS) and for First Lady, Laura Bush.

Jan's performance is a blend of stage drama and "Living History."   In a living history portrayal, an actor BECOMES a character, just as they do in a play, but, unlike a play, the audience may interact with the character and ask questions or make comments.

You DO NOT need to be an expert on Alcott's time period, which was 1832 to 1888 in order to speak to her, just be yourself.  BUT REMEMBER, SHE WILL KNOW NOTHING OF THIS CENTURY OR PLACE.  She will stay in character and only know of her time period.

Miss Alcott will come in after having had a minor carriage accident and will be waiting for repair.  She will be most grateful for your company.

Now, if you will, prepare to travel back in time to meet Louisa May Alcott.
