Workshop: Ministry and Liturgy for Same-Gender-Loving Couples-Newton Centre, MA
|
|
| |
|
Location: Andover Newton Theological School, 210 Herrick Road, Newton Centre, MA
Ministry and Liturgy for Same-Gender-Loving Couples - While debate continues in some faith communities as to the appropriateness or permissibility of religious blessing of same-sex couples' unions, many faith communities have for years embraced the love of all couples who understand themselves to be called to a spiritual union. Few ministers, however, have had the opportunity to learn about providing pastoral support and inspirational liturgy for same-sex couples. Without such training, they borrow from methods they learned for opposite-sex couples, sometimes in ways that are effective, and sometimes in ways that undercut the significant obstacles same-sex couples continue to face. In this day-long workshop participants will be introduced to methods and resources that will enable them to minster effectively and faithfully with same-sex couples as they consider and prepare for marriage or the blessing of their union.
Registration Fee: $75. Snacks and lunch included.

|
Location: 1st Congregational Church, 11 Church St., Newfaine, VT
On Sunday, June 30, 2013 the First Congregational Church of Newfane will hold an Open House to celebrate the completion of the new addition to the Church.
Festivities will begin at 2:00 PM and continue through 4:00 PM. There will be a short program at 2:30 PM to publicly thank and acknowledge the people and organizations that contributed in so many different ways to successful completion of the project.
Please mark the date on your calendar and plan to join us in this joyful celebration. Several new features are included in the new addition. Among them are: an improved handicapped ramp and elevator/lift to provide access to the sanctuary and throughout the Church, a delightful new meeting and education room, office space for the pastor and secretarial staff and storage space for the Bell Choir and Heritage Festival.
Construction of the addition began inn October 2012 and was essentially completed by late winter, at which time we began to use parts of the new facility. We have now moved in and are using the entire building. Each day we find ways that this facility enhances the Church's religious and educational mission and expands the ways in which the building contributes to the growth and life of the greater community.

'Our Children, Climate, Faith' Symposium-Strafford
|
|
| |
|
Location: Historic Townhouse, Strafford, VT
Co-sponsored by the churches of Strafford, VT: the United Church, the Unitarian Universalist Society, and Our Lady of Light
August 12 - 16, Day Camp associated with this symposium. All children of all faiths ages 3 – 18 are welcome to attend.
August 16-17, Symposium
August 18, Worship Service
Our Children, Climate, Faith, an inclusive symposium on moral-ethical, spiritual, and religious consciousness addressing climate disruption and the rightful future of all children.
The Our Children, Climate, Faith Symposium has been called by the three churches of Strafford, VT. The United Church (United Church of Christ and American Baptist Church), The Unitarian Universalist Society, and the Our Lady of Light Chapel (Roman Catholic). The symposium is being organized and run by an independent steering committee made up of members of the community.
During the symposium, we will explore how people of spirituality and faith, motivated by their faith and associated moral and ethical principles have a duty to work for a healthy biosphere for our children and our children’s children. Respecting the plurality of our many spiritual and faith traditions, we will consider appropriate messages and actions, and examine how action or inaction on climate disruption is central to a spiritually-informed life.
The program is designed to create opportunities for reflective, prayerful listening as well as vibrant discussion. We seek to promote a shift in awareness in both mind and heart – in our “soul” or “inner self” – that is necessary for us to simply live on this earth, now and far into the future. We will have many opportunities for group discussion, thought-provoking activities, and networking. Through listening and discussion we will help create the messages of action for our faiths which we can share with our own spiritual, philosophical and religious communities.
We now have over a dozen speakers confirmed for the symposium! The excitement over the speakers and the program is growing. We’ll be briefly introducing speakers in these emails, but for more information and to register now, please visit our website.
http://www.FaithClimateConference.org/Speakers
We were of course excited when Bill McKibben confirmed. But we were equally excited when Rabbi Michael Cohen said yes. Michael works with the Arava Institute, which prepares future Arab and Jewish leaders to cooperatively solve the region's environmental challenges. Rabbi Cohen is excited to be helping to develop solutions in the US with us.
If you’re ready to Register, we’ve made it very easy for you. Simply go to the website and we can accept either credit card or PayPal payments. And we’ve kept the registration fee very affordable. Five meals are included, so we know this symposium will nourish mind and body!

Strafford, VT is the birthplace of Senator Justin Smith Morrill, (namesake and driver behind passage of the Land Grant College Act) and long-time home of the Reverend William Sloane Coffin (civil rights leader), both leaders in major social justice issues of their time. They typify the spirit and understanding that emanates from this place and the people who live here, and motivates us to create and host this symposium.

Naming, Claiming, Proclaiming – where is your edge? What does “the edge” look and feel like, threat or opportunity? What is the significance of “the edge” in the life of your congregation? How do you recognize it in yourself? How do you celebrate it wherever you find it?
We will examine the edge, not so much as a place to “fall off” from (although unexamined we may) but, as a place from which to fly. Bring your stories, your listening ears, your open hearts and your questions as we welcome the Rev. Elizabeth Dilley to lead us to a new edge of understanding.
The Convocation Planning Team is pleased to welcome the Rev. Elizabeth Dilley. Elizabeth serves as Minister for Ministers inLocal Churches on the Ministerial Excellence, Support and Authorization (MESA) ministry team in Local Church Ministries at the UCC national offices in Cleveland.

That Pushes My Buttons: Handling Difficult Behavior, Complaint, and Criticism in Ministry -Ministers can hope ministry will involve extending benevolence and care for people, to which they will respond with joy and gratitude. Often that happens. But other times people’s bile can be an unwelcome surprise. What then?
Difficult behavior occurs. It contributes to unhappy congregations and to ministers losing their jobs. This workshop aims to support ministers in handling difficult behavior, complaint, and criticism in ways that enhance the health of the minister and of the congregation.
The workshop will include:
-
A definition of difficult behavior
-
Structural and developmental sources of difficult behavior
-
Why ministers can be targets of difficult behavior
-
How congregations can become a fertile ground for difficult behavior
-
The use of congregational norms and standards to support humane behavior
-
Doing the unexpected in the face of difficult behavior
-
What makes complaint and criticism difficult
-
Common (although unsuccessful) defenses people use when criticized
-
Useful personal assumptions to employ when criticized
-
Useful ways to handle complaint and criticism
Registration Fee: $75. Snacks and lunch included.

New Habits for Nones: Practicing Digitally-Integrated Ministry in the Post-Christian World with Elizabeth Drescher and Keith Anderson - It’s been hard to miss the near-constant news media coverage of the growth in the population of so-called “Nones”—people who answer “none” when asked with what religion they most identify or affiliate. It is often assumed that Nones are atheists or otherwise unreligious (or even irreligious). But the data tell is that this is not the case. The majority of Nones believe in God or a universal spirit and many have robust spiritual practices that are not inconsistent with more progressive Christian traditions and values. The challenge for ministry leaders now is how to understand Nones on their own terms, beyond the data and often over-generalizing commentary and outside religious assumptions about being unaffiliated or unidentified with institutional religion might mean.
In the 2014 Woodbury Leadership Workshop, Elizabeth Drescher and Keith Anderson, co-authors of Click 2 Save: The Digital Ministry Bible, will share new insights on Nones, digitally-integrated culture, and hands-on approaches to relationship, engagement, and leadership in the “land between religions.”
Registration for the Woodbury Workshop will begin in September 2013.
