Cancer: Thriving and Surviving Self-Management
This is a FREE workshop. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success builds confidence in your ability to manage your health and to maintain an active and fulfilling life. To be a full participant people need to attend 4 out of the 6 weekly sessions. Any cancer survivor 18 and older can attend the workshop. If you don’t want to attend alone bring a friend, family member or caregiver with you.
A cancer survivor is defined as anyone who has ever had a diagnosis of cancer and is alive today. It is an evidence-based program that promotes the empowerment of people with cancer to take control of their health and to improve the quality of their lives. The workshop is given 2½ hours once a week for six weeks.
Subjects covered include: 1) techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation; 2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance; 3) appropriate use of medications; 4) communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals; 5) nutrition; and 6) how to evaluate new treatments. It is the process in which the program is taught that makes it effective.
Each participant in the workshop receives a copy of the companion book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, 4th Edition, and an audio relaxation CD.
