The lion dance is a traditional form of dance used in several Asian and Asian American communities worldwide wherein dancers operate a lion costume and dance in a way that mirrors typical lion movements in order to bring good luck and fortune. The costume is usually operated by two dancers, and the dance is performed to music produced primarily on percussion instruments. The dance is performed for Lunar New Year as well as many other cultural, religious, and traditional festivals.
