The Making of ‘The Bishop’s Curse.’
Tuesday October 30, 2012
5:30 PM
Meet author, Raff Ellis, who will describe how and why be became interested in a long ago event which resulted in his newly released novel, The Bishop’s Curse. This event unrolled in his home town of Carthage, NY where his family was immersed in the St. James Parish, the focal point of this long-ago drama. This riveting novel is about a battle of wills between clergy and laymen that was sparked by laws passed by Protestant-run legislatures (as early as 1784), insisting that separation of church and state govern the organization and administration of religious societies. The underlying belief was that non-local governance of churches, such as a foreign entity in Rome, violated this cherished principle. He will explain the research he did; availability of resources; analysis of the data; and how the events of the period affected all the players in this drama.
He will have copies of his book available for purchasing and autographing.
Raff Ellis was born in Watertown and spent his formative years in Carthage, NY. He was a member of St. James Parish where the incident that forms the basis for his story occurred over 150 years ago. He is the award-winning author of two books in print: ‘Kisses from a Distance’ and ‘Dam Foolishness’, both of which are memoirs. Look forward to an interesting and entertaining evening.
