There is a silent increase on the march in our coastal communities and impacts from it are adding up—big time! It is an increase in the risks we face from storms, flooding, erosion, sea level rise, and a changing climate. These risks have associated environmental, economic and even psychological costs—costs which are escalating as the storms from 2018 that rocked different states and Cape Cod so vividly demonstrated. These risks also affect key decisions people make including where to live and where to buy and rent property, which in turn have implications for the real estate industry. Today there is growing emphasis nationwide on increasing coastal resilience, i.e., the ability of people and communities to better prepare for, respond to, and recover from disruptive events.
