Steven Peters, creative director at SmokeSygnals, will discuss Thanksgiving – the holiday that romanticizes the 1621 harvest gathering between the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower – and why it is recognized as a National Day of Mourning by the original inhabitants of this land. The talk will explore why Native Americans and supporters gather at the foot of the statue of Massasoit on Cole’s Hill overlooking Plymouth Rock, as well as other places across the country, to protest a myth that largely ignores the atrocities of colonization and the cultural injustices endured by Native Americans to this day.
