Hubert Harrison:The Father of Harlem Radicalism

Thursday February 25, 2021
7:00 PM until 8:30 PM

After coming to the U.S. in 1900, St. Croix-born, Harlem-based Hubert Harrison (1883-1927) served as the founder of the Liberty League and was a pioneer Black activist in the Freethought Movement. Often known as the  "Father of Harlem Radicalism", he helped transform the 135th Street Public Library into an international center for research in Black culture (known today as the Schomburg Center for research in Black Culture).

Dr. Perry's presentation is based on his two-volume Columbia University Press biography - "Hubert Harrison: The Strggle for Equality, 1918-1927".
Dr. Jeffrey B. Perry, an archivist, bibliophile, and historian, preserved and inventoried the "Hubert H. Harrison Papers" and helped to place them at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Columbia University.
