Event: John Cole - The Old House Whisperer

Tuesday July 18, 2017
6:30 PM until 7:45 PM

Participants will have a chance to win a free ONE year household membership to Historic New England! Unlimited free admission to ALL 37 historic sites!

We are pleased to announce a presentation called “Dating Houses in Essex County and West Newbury” by John Cole, “The Old House Whisperer”. Cole will point out the telltale “sign posts” in discovering the true age of early houses in Essex County and West Newbury as seen from the exterior. He will also reveal the surprise of where most original rare elements of these dwellings are located.

John Cole of Haverhill, also known as the “Old House Whisperer,” was formerly a property manager for Historic New England and worked extensively with acclaimed American architectural historian, Abbott Lowell Cummings. He founded John F. Cole Associates, specializing in antique home sales and handled the sale of the Lord Timothy Dexter mansion in Newburyport, MA. He has rescued several historic houses, organized and oversaw a pioneer preservation covenant project for the Ipswich Historical Commission, and was the founder of the Benton County Preservation Project in Benton County, AR. He founded Shaker Workshops, Inc., makers of reproduction Shaker antique furniture, in Concord, MA. He taught at the Harvard School of Design and the University of Arkansas Graduate School of Architecture. Today, John writes books on the historical architecture of private homes and commercial buildings. He also appears in local periodicals and is a regular contributor to Newburyport Neighbors Magazine and Ipswich Neighbors Magazine. He also lectures to libraries, historic societies/commissions, and various professional organizations. More information about John Cole can be found at www.oldhousewhisperer.com.
