Welcome to the GraveyardMonday July 30, 2018
6:15 PM until 7:45 PM
"Welcome to The Graveyard", is a virtual tour of West Newbury’s cemeteries and gravestones. Taking us from colonial burial grounds, through the rural cemetery movement of the 19th century and into 21st century locations, we examine why we have cemeteries and gravestones, why they look like they do and how styles and art have evolved over almost 400 years. Prior to the show date, The Girls will hit the road and go through the town cemeteries, taking pictures for use in building the presentation with as much local content as possible. This program has been tailored for many different towns and groups, presenting to historical societies, genealogy groups, libraries and others for almost twenty years!
The Gravestone Girls create art pieces using the primitive carved images from the faces of old New England gravestones. Our creations include decorative wall plaques, magnets, coasters and also incorporate salvaged architectural and antique materials to make one of a kind pieces. In addition to the art we create, The Gravestone Girls also lead cemetery tours, teach gravestone rubbing classes and lecture about gravestone art, history and symbolism to educate on these beautiful and historic spaces.
This program is generously sponsored by the Haverhill Bank, West Newbury.
