Event: Stairwell Gallery - Scott Bricher

Saturday September 8, 2012

Scott Bricher is an artist with so many talents, it is hard to know where to begin. He studied at Parson School of Design from 1980 – 1984 and then at the Art Students League of New York from 1987 to 1989 with the world renowned portrait painter, Nelson Shanks. He is a portraitist, illustrator, animator, instructor and the list goes on. His clients include PBS, Mad Magazine, Frito-Lay, Pepsi, Hasbro, Diageo and Pitney Bowes, Taunton Press and Crew Design, Inc. He has won many awards for his interactive media, online advertising and websites and won the gold PROMAX/Broadcast Design Awards for 2008. As a traditional painter he has achieved great success but now he has transitioned into a new technique which springs from his own creative genius. Traditional oil painting with recent experiments using encaustic wax and paper lithograph on wood has opened a whole new world. The paintings undergo a layering and “aging.” Layers of transparent and semi-transparent wax give the work texture, age and mystery “Wunderkammer” (German for “wonder-room”) harkens back to the Renaissance when collectors kept a cabinet of curiosities, objects whose categorical boundaries were not yet defined. Scott and his family possess an actual cabinet full of collected curiosities some of which appear in his paintings. Of his new work he writes, “The encaustic glazes of the paintings represent the aged glass of the dream cabinet and the membrane that separates direct access to the images at the edge of my vision and imagination.” They are both beautiful and intriguing and their compositional forms have “lived” in his sketchbook for years. Stream of consciousness, while often referring to a narrative, describes his paintings which are the narrative of a working mind allowing his subconscious and imagination to create incredible mindscapes. Scott writes of his work, “I let my paintings develop their own ‘dream logic’ as they develop and unfold.” You can see more of Scott’s work on his website http://scottbricher.com/news.html . However, please come by and wander the Stairwell Gallery and immerse yourself in the wonderland of Scott Bricher’s Wunderkammer.
