Based on Alasdair Gray's 1992 novel of the same name, the story follows the resurrection of Bella. Through unorthodox experimentations with human life and death, scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter raises the young woman back to life. However, her newer version finds her relearning about the world and its ways. At the same time, she discovers inequalities that restrict women in a conservative society.
