Rocks From Space

Topics that will be covered in this course are: (1) What are meteorites? (2) Where do they originate? (3) How fast do they travel? (4) What are their physical and chemical characteristics? In addition, the class will examine the physical characteristics of meteorite/fragment recently found on Martha's Vineyard. There are at least nine physical characteristics that David Nellis has documented in connection with these meteorite fragments. Facilitator David Nellis David Nellis was on the faculty of UMass-Boston for 25 years. During his career he taught geology courses and conducted many field trips throughout the South Shore area. He is well acquainted with most significant geologic sites in the area. Because of his background, He believes that a courseo f this sort would of interest to people who wish to learn more about the geological environment of the South Shore and its role in the early economic development of the area. He has taught Physical Geology, Mineralogy, Structural Geology, Field Methods, Ground Water, and Geomorphology. Class consists of 3 sessions. This is session 3. Sponsored by UMass-OLLI Program.
