Humanities Book Discussion - Becoming Beauvoir

Tuesday February 7, 2023
6:30 PM until 7:30 PM

Our  online book discussion group for adults, features a different Humanities discipline - history, literature, philosophy, ethics, archaeology, anthropology, linguistics, geography, the law or legal theory, classics, and cultural or religious studies -  each month.  We will join a humanities expert for a shared book discussion on Zoom, in the comfort of your own living room.  We will alternate monthly between fiction and non-fiction.

This month's selection is Becoming Beauvoir by Kate Kirkpatrick, a fascinating philosophical biography of one of the most important existentialists and feminists of the 20th century.

A symbol of liberated womanhood, Simone de Beauvoir's unconventional relationships inspired and scandalised her generation. A philosopher, writer, and feminist icon, she won prestigious literary prizes and transformed the way we think about gender with The Second Sex. But despite her successes, she wondered if she had sold herself short.

Her liaison with Jean-Paul Sartre has been billed as one of the most legendary love affairs of the twentieth century. But for Beauvoir it came at a cost: for decades she was dismissed as an unoriginal thinker who 'applied' Sartre's ideas. In recent years new material has come to light revealing the ingenuity of Beauvoir's own philosophy and the importance of other lovers in her life.

This ground-breaking biography draws on never-before-published diaries and letters to tell the fascinating story of how Simone de Beauvoir became herself.

Copies of the month's selection will be provided for all participants.

Our discussion facilitator will be Dr. Kiki Berk, who previously facilitated our discussion of The Sparrow, with great feedback by our attendees. Dr. Kiki Berk is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Southern New Hampshire University. She received her Ph.D. in Philosophy from the VU University Amsterdam in 2010. Her current research interests include value theory (especially happiness), analytic existentialism (especially the meaning of life), and the philosophy of death.

This program is funded by a Perspectives grant from New Hampshire Humanities.
