Humanities Book Discussion - Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister

Tuesday March 7, 2023
6:30 PM until 7:30 PM

Our online book discussion group for adults, features a different Humanities discipline - history, literature, philosophy, ethics, archaeology, anthropology, linguistics, geography, the law or legal theory, classics, and cultural or religious studies -  each month.  We will join a humanities expert for a shared book discussion on Zoom, in the comfort of your own living room.  We will alternate monthly between fiction and non-fiction.

This month's selection is Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire.  Copies of the month's selection will be provided for all participants.

From Harper Collins:   Gregory Maguire proves himself to be “one of contemporary fiction’s most assured myth-makers” (Kirkus Reviews) with Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, his ingenious and provocative retelling of the timeless Cinderella fairy tale. Perhaps best known for his dark and breathtaking Oz series The Wicked Years—including the novel Wicked, which inspired the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical—Maguire is a master at upending the ordinary to help us see the familiar in a brilliant new light.

Our discussion facilitator will be Ann McClellan.  Ann McClellan is professor of English at Plymouth State University where she teaches 19th and 20th century British literature. She is the author of How British Women Writers Transformed the Campus Novel (2012), Sherlock's World: Fanfiction and the Reimagining of BBC's Sherlock (2018), and several articles on cultural topics ranging from servants on screen to social media, fan fiction, and Sherlock Holmes. She is currently writing a new monograph on Black Sherlock Holmes adaptations.

This program is funded by a Perspectives grant from New Hampshire Humanities.
