Phipps| Super. Natural. Glass Art by Jason Gamrath

We will be visiting the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens to the see “Super. Natural. Glass Art by Jason Gamrath”and the Butterfly Forest. The Phipps had great success with the glass art exhibits of Dale Chihuly in 2007 and Hans Godo Frabel in 2010 so they commissioned a new show created by Jason Gamrath. Gamrath creates realistic botanical pieces on a enormous scale towering from 6-14 feet tall. The Conservatory will have more than 40 installations that will be displayed among live botanicals. Many were custom made for the Phipps including a glass corpse flower (thankfully without the natural bloom’s famous rotting carcass smell).

The Butterfly Forest is located in the Stove Room. Newly hatched butterflies flutter among plants of the deep tropics. Carnegie Mellon University students enrolled in Experimental Sound have installed a sound system to “generate a sonic environment that constantly evolves”.

Admission Fee: Adults = $17.95 Seniors (62+) = $16.95 Free to members of Phipps.  Parking: Free in center island, Schenley Drive. Metered street either side of Schenley Drive. Accessibility: Gardens are wheelchair accessible with the exception of the Stove Room (Butterfly Forest) in the West Wing. Wheelchairs are available at admissions free of charge on a first come, first served basis.
