The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society / Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows
Juliet Ashton is a jaded writer worn out after years of trying to write about the upside of the Second World War for the general public. She is looking for something new to refresh her battered spirit which arrives in the form of a letter addressed to her by a farmer from Guernsey. Guernsey is a small island still recovering from its recent occupation by the Germans, an occupation that lead to the creation of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society which was used to secretly subvert German rule. The farmer, Dawes Adams, bought an old book that used to belong to Juliet, and writes looking for an address to a bookshop in London. Juliet begins a correspondence not only with Adams, but with other members from the Society. Through the letters, she enters the world of rural Guernsey and learns about the island's inhabitants, their literary tastes, their lives, and how they dealt with the German occupation. It makes Juliet realize how small acts of heroism made a big difference to the island community eventually leading her to the island of Guernsey herself, a trip that will change her life forever.
